I noted the contrast between Mahalia and Pearl. Mahalia, in her darker clothes and more conservative singing represents the old traditional and conservative religious and secular community and Pearl, the new, less strick and more lax era to come. When she ends with that last line " let the dove come in", it's as if she's saying "there's no harm in loosening our stance on creativity. Mahalia is saying let the the Holy ghost/God come in and Pearl is saying let self expression come in. It's like a commentary on the transition of the black church and society in large to the modern world. This is by far one of my favorite movie scenes of all for it's commentary on society and also because of the talent from two of my favorite vocalists.

I love a lot of those old black and white early movies, even the horror movies. I was surprise to find out the preacher was actually Puerto Rican. I'm gonna check out some movies he did before and after this one.
Damn shame. Mother instructing the son to dis-obey a God fearing father. To be a maker of worldy music. This type of sin is similar to Eve in the garden being deceived by the serpent. If you have a God fearing man you should support him over the child. He only has his sons best interest at hand.
