Dead Stars is one of the most famous short stories in Philippine Literature in English. The characters are so relatable and the plot is very familiar. Please read the short story!
Hello Lleanna! Below are the passages pertaining to the times when Alfredo and Julia spent time together--alone, sweet, and more intimate than usual. For your reference below is meaning of the word "dating" according to Collins Dictionary, "If you are dating someone, you go out with them regularly because you are having, or you may soon have, a romantic relationship with them." Below are the passages: "On Sunday MORNINGS after mass, father and son would go crunching up the gravel road to the house on a hill. The Judge's wife invariably offered them beer, which Don Julian enjoyed and Alfredo did not. After a half n hour or so, the chessboard will be brought out; then ALFREDO and JULIA SALAS would GO OUT TO THE PORCH TO CHAT. She sat in the low hammock and he in a rocking chair and the hours--warm and quiet MARCH hours sped by. He enjoyed talking with her and it was evident that she liked his company; YET WHAT FEELING THERE WAS BETWEEN THEM WAS SO UNDISTURBED THAT IT SEEMED A MATTER OF COURSE. Only when Esperanza CHANCED TO ASK HIM INDIRECTLY about THOSE VISITS did some uneasiness creep into his thoughts of the girl next door." Esperanza also asked Alfredo about his whereabouts every Sunday after mass, and alfredo lied about it. I will quote again another passage: "that half-lie told him what he had not admitted openly to himself, THAT HE WAS GIVING JULIA SALAS SOMETHING WHICH HE WAS NOT FREE TO GIVE." Based on how the writer phrased it, Julia and Alfredo share something that are unusual for persons who are just "friends". here is another passage: Those SIX WEEKS were now so swift--seeming in the memory, yet had THEY been so deep in the living, So CHARGED WITH COMPELLING POWER AND SWEETNESS. These passages DIRECTLY from the story may not seem like "dating" for us in this generation, but during that time, we have enough reasons to believe that it is. Hope this helps! :)
Thank you so much Sir Padilla for the informative story review of one of the Philippine Literature's Jewel, "Dead Stars." I am currently doing my book review for my Philippine Literature subject and this short story is one of the short stories we need to review. I was not a fan of flowery kind of writing style, but when I finally understood this creatively, crafted words by our own woman author, I felt awe with how genius this writer is! She reminded me of Jane Austen and The Bronte sisters, who are my favorite female authors and I dreamed that aside from being an English teacher in the future, I will also publish my novel or some literary works in the future. I'm still a student and an aspiring author, but someday, with perseverance and hard work, I will be. Thanks for the review!
Hi sir I'm one of your student at MET i just want to say that admire your teaching techniques and management there's no dull moments even tho it's siesta time Thank you sir sa pag share ng knowledge po ninyo about English, how i wish na sana kayo po naging professor namin in Eng 1 2 3 lit 1 2 sa tup hehe, God bless and see you around sir Like like like and subscribe!
Thank you Sir. Edward for your analysis of "Dead Stars!" Grabe nakakaiyak itong story na ito! Naalala ko tuloy ung "Paalam, Patawad" ni Moira Ahahahahah
Hi sir! I'm your student from MET, and I just want to say that I really enjoyed the review session earlier. You really inspired me to pursue teaching and to become as enthusiastic as you. Thank you sir! Sana kayo lecturer naming mga english majors sa specialization review namin. Salamat po sir! Hope to see you and to become your student in the future hehehe 😊 PS: Already followed you on Instagram :)
Hi Sir! I am one of your students in MET. Literature is one of my favorite parts during the review even though I am not an English major. Dami ko pong natutunan sa inyo. I saw your post in instagram about your channel so I immediately searched it and subscribed. Dead Star is a timeless masterpiece. I loved it before and now, I love it more. I've been dysfunctional for days because I got so emotional reminiscing the past. Ang saya at sakit lang balikan hahaha. And your video is a timely and beautiful reminder for me that things are not always what they seem. Maybe I am just too attached and "in love with the idea of being in love". Again, thank you Sir Padilla for this and for everything. I owe you a lot ❤️ God bless you, Sir!
Ana Therese Tandoy yes. Sometimes we need to stop ang think about things... maybe we are just seeing the light of dead stars... long extinguished yet they appear to be in the heavens... haha...
hindi ko masyado naiintindihan yung story nito nung binasa ko pero because of this video sobra kong naiintindihan na hihi , thankyouuu po sobra akong natulungan nito sa online class koo!!❤️😊
@@romeosagun2052 hello! Well the story presents a rather old fashioned view of gender roles--meaning women just waiting for the decision of men. In this story, only Alfredo was in control--both esperanza and julia were just like objects waiting to be chosen. Esperanza is trapped in the idea that being married is a woman's ultimate goal. On the whole, I strongly believe that Alfredo only loves two things-- himself and his own idea of love.
@@EdwardJohnPadilla thank you sir! One very last question sir! Aside from love, forbidden love, and responsibility po, what other themes do you think does the story revolve?
Hi Sir Padilla! Hindi po kayo energetic sa vids niyo. ☹️ One of the best pa naman po pano kayo magturo! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Thank you sir!! -One of your MET student
