  • Which Bike: BMX, Track or MTB will be the fastest in a man to man Sprint Battle on different distances?
    That question is what we: Jeffrey Hoogland, Justin Kimmann and Jeroen van Eck asked ourselves as well. So we came together on the abandon airstrip in Soesterberg, big thanks to them for giving us permission and letting us film this footage.
    Action guaranteed with huge power numbers and great battles till the last centimeters.
    Enjoy & let us know in the comments below what you think!
    Cheers,
    Justin, Jeffrey & Jeroen

But my first purchase when I got home was a BMX bike... I just turned 50 this month and I still BMX, MTB, and road cycle. I pulled my skateboard out and skated with my kids lastnight. My girls are stoked they have a dad they can do all kinds of things with. They have friends who wish they did... It is sad that some people have to stop doing things like that cause life gets in the way. I had to learn to shuffle things if I still wanted to do all the things I've always loved to do. The track bike was in such a high gear. I'd have opted for a medium chain ring and made up for it witb high cadence. I used to ride a very similar bike, with the only difference being it was a roadie with 6 gears. I messed with my gearing on that bike as my front derailer went bad....
      My top speed I got while drafting at around 45 mph at an almost stupid cadence, however I beat every BMX rider Ik in acceleration

    • @albr4
      @albr4 Před 3 lety +13

    • @BMWN54N55
      @BMWN54N55 Před 2 lety

      Yeah that's same thing with my road bike too I have a big 58t chainring on the front with 11t cassette in the back and on that gear it's so slow at acceleration but once I put into a much lower gear it accelerates really quickly because I converted it to only 9 speed because of upgrading from a 50t to 58t its a 2021 Giant contend 3 so the back sprockets are 11t up to a 32t in the back so if you put it in like a way lower gear and still be on the 58t chainring it flies in acceleration I got it up to 31 mph on a flat road in 56 degrees weather and a little windy so I'm gonna try when it gets way warmer out to raise that top speed to 35 to 40 mph on a flat road

      Difference over 100m between gear ratio 39x20 down to 39x12 (still a long way off 62x16) is in the range of 0,6 seconds according to Kyle/Mastropaolo. With gearing along the way there's still an advantage over 125m possible in the same range. Again Kyle with his invention called The Browning Automatic Transmission. But technical progress especially concerning off-road bikes since then really expanded. Track cycling is much more about aerodynamics and in sprint about power, but Eddy Merckx would up to a few kilometers lose from real teenage girls, that is with of cause their current track bikes. it's not, that the world since then has seen a huge shift of power towards girls and women.🤣

      Het als enige kunnen schakelen deed me denken aan de Browning Automatic Bicycle Transmission van Chester R. Kyle, door hem bijna een halve eeuw geleden uitgevonden. Uitgaande van een toenmalige standaardtijd van 12,08s voor 125m met staande start met een verzet 48x14 zou er met 3 schakelingen een verbetering van deze starttijd mogelijk zijn van respectievelijk 11,53s, 11,47s en 11,31s. Uiteraard nog ver af van de huidige absolute wereldtop liggende rond de 10,40s met wedstrijdverzet wel te verstaan. Aan de hand van het aantal schakelingen kunnen "we" inschatten, nou ja, welk voordeel Jeroen van Eck heeft behaald.

      I tried it already, same gear inches but with different teeth combination, the smaller chainring is lighter excluding consideration of rim size, example like 38/14 and 52/19 the lower teeth is lighter even though they're the same 2.7 ratio, affecting power output is a huge factor in a sprint depending on the rider strength to turn a chainring size ratio

    Did someone time the runs? I am curious how their times compare to track sprinters (runners).

    • @TheVelodroom
      @TheVelodroom Před 3 lety +1

      Due to the unorthodox coverage of the races it's diificult for precise timing, but for the 100 meters it must be in the range of the best female runners of our time, like SAF, Shelley-Ann Fraser. Usain Bolt is then way out of reach. Conditions then of cause were very harsh, cold weather, rather high rolling resistance, no smooth wooden track, wind conditions not known and of cause no ideal starting procedure. Correction: based on other footage it would be more in the range of Usain Bolt, but I am still not in the clear. No timing let alone, electronic timing.

    • @marcokoehler5020
      @marcokoehler5020 Před 2 lety

      @@TheVelodroom actually they should be a good bit faster than bolt. If I remember correctly, I did it faster in my active BMX years and I wasn't on the level of those riders shown in the video

    • @TheVelodroom
      @TheVelodroom Před 2 lety

      @@marcokoehler5020 In my original post I made the restriction of my guesstimate due to the onothodox coverage of the race and difficulty of timing from solely a PC screen. Later on I got better footage and data, although some data were denied to me. My own analysis then was in the range of 9,45s, 9,51s and 9,85s. 100m splits are rarely clocked, because modern tracks almost always measure 250m with half laps of 125m. So why bother at the extra cost for registering 100m split times. But on 200m tracks like the UCI home track in Aigle (altitude around 400m, so a bit beneficial) they measured at least at the 2018 UCI Junior Track World Championships also 100m split times. The best 100m time was 9,299s. But it should be pointed out, that the 100m distance still is quite dependable of gearing, with possible benefits compared with normal gearing from 0,5 tot 1 second. So, from a objective point of view, as also many readers poiinted out, the challenge was shere BS, but further it was fun. Thanks for your reply. I could hardly remember my own original post.

    The fastest longevity runs will always go to the road/track type of bike but it can't do much but just ride on a clean paved road, the mountain bike is great for literally anything and it can take jumps and it has a good speed for longevity too, and the BMX has a killer short run speed and is easier to do tricks and can take jumps too. But overall I prefer a mountain bike all day everyday, even for days when I keep it simple on paved roads.
