As striking as his moments of blazing speed and consistent pure sound is his musicality. His grooves are so engaging even when he’s just playing the simplest and most straight forward tumbao. You can feel the band playing behind him when he’s by himself.

The night I discovered the magnitude of Giovanni's talent, he was on tour with Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead drummer) and Zakir Hussain (*tabla player of Shakti, John McLaughlin's projects, and shiploads of other bands and solo performances)........ talk about nuclear fusion.......there it was :) Giovanni's slap with the left hand is so crisp and punchy it's kind of amazing he can get that pitch out of such a large diameter skin. * I wonder how you'd say "tabla player" in Spanish? "Tablero" ??? "Tabla-ero" ???? In English...... Tabla-ist? Tablist? One word applies to all of 'em: "superlative".

Miren mi gente como musico cubano les digo que en Cuba siempre hubieron y abran lo mejor de la percussion pero tambien les digo que en Puerto Rico se encuentran unos musicos tremendos y la habilidad y tecnica de Givanni no se la quita nadie. El que uno piense que es mejor es cuestion de gusto o de patriotismo y es muy difcil entre los mejores decir quien es el mejor. Pero vamos a dar credito donde se merece.
