  • Dive into the depths of our planet's secrets! 🌊 Did you know that a quarter of our annual CO2 emissions vanish into the world's oceans, playing a crucial role in slowing down global warming? 🌎🌬️ But here's the catch - we're only scratching the surface!
With millions of verified data points published in the Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT), we're decoding the mysteries of climate change. Yet, the vast global ocean remains largely unexplored each year. 🗺️ How do we bridge the gaps in our knowledge? The answer lies in the magic of neural networks and artificial intelligence! ✨🤖
The global carbon budget has been compiled every year since 2006 by the international research project Global Carbon Project. The objective is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the global carbon cycle. In addition to both natural and human emissions and uptake, it addresses the interactions and feedbacks between them.
The work on this year's report was led by the University of Exeter. Researchers from the Bjerknes Centre who participated include Meike Becker (BCCR, @unibergen), Are Olsen (BCCR, UiB), Abdirahman Omar (BCCR, @norce_research), and Jörg Schwinger (BCCR, NORCE).
Animated and edited by Eli Kristin Muriaas. Produced with support from the Research Council of Norway (RapidVERIFY, #309571). Thanks to ICOS; Glen Peters, @CICERO; Peter Landschützer, VLIZ: Corinne Le Quere, University of East Anglia; and the University of Exeter.
