      Exactly, I don't think anybody expects to be holding university lectures in a language they learned strictly through Duolingo. Currently I'm focusing all my language efforts on German, but every morning I do couple Spanish, French and Russian lessons on Duolingo. I've never did any other language content in Spanish besides Duolingo and after an year, I can understand Spanish memes from my friends, I can talk about basic stuff, I can get around in Spanish countries as a tourist and not feel as a total moron when I go out with Spanish only groups. I could never have a fluent conversation, but it's effective to gain the basics, so you can build on it through more fun content such as series, movies and simpler books... And most of all, it's fun, which is subjective, but I had much better time with it than with Busuu, Rosetta or Speakly, since I was actually looking forward to it, not as a chore... And consistency is always king.

    I couldn't have said it better myself, I hear people praise Anki as the most important language learning tool since sliced bread, but it's sooo clunky. I tried it for my japanese for a few days; but suddenly making flashcards, importing/exporting vocab decks and learning the program felt like a chore in of itself. And for whatever reason, the words on screen never stuck no matter how many times I went over them.
    Now I make physical flashcards and use the Leitner system instead; and it works like magic. For whatever reason, physically writing down the vocab, and purposefully choosing the words I feel are useful for me to learn (rather than downloading a pre-made "5000 common words" list) makes it easy to learn and ascertain my 15 new words every day.

I have thought of taking a college course for korean but those are astronomically over priced $500 + book per quarter. I’m willing to pay for an app like Memrise because I found the vocab fun to learn and with the native speakers saying the words I now have a reference rather than a robot voice. My problem with mango is that it’s to quick of a pace for myself. I learned a few phrases but then it teaches grammar too quickly.

    just found your channel and went through a couple of vids and subscribed! as an audio nerd I noticed something you can improve on: I found both in the 5 apps video and this one, your mic was clipping at times (the gain is too high making it distort when you speak louder) you can lower your mic gain in your recording phase and raise it later in post without any artefacts (you could also possibly use a compressor on it which would help making the volume of speech more consistent and not bump or go too low between different dynamics, but that is an extra step) however since you videos seems to be mainly conversation based I hope you give audio some more love :)

    5 min drops
    10 min reading an article on el Pais
    30 min memrise (special class decks, made by Baselang.com)
    60 min busuu

    If you find a good deck Anki is awesome. I don't know about the other languages, but Japanese has a good one. I use the Core 2000 set and I am learning a lot. It has vocabulary, it uses that word in a sentence, it is written in Japanese. But once you flip the card it also has hiragana if you can't read the Kanji or Katakana. Every card has audio. They flip the way they quiz you because sometimes it is just the audio and you have to guess what it is, so it helps you with listening skills. I also like it that it has pictures.

    I have Rosetta stone which can get you pretty far in a language as far as grammar goes however it doesn't have a lot of vocabulary so I also used duolingo and an app called hellotalk that let's you speak to people in the language you're learning and I also made sure to look into colloquial speech and watching shows in the language. It's boring but watching shows ment for little kids helps since it's repetitive and they tend to speak slow so it helps you get used to hearing it. I also use google translate a lot, it's extremely useful for when you don't know a word or forget how to spell one, it's not good to use for a lot of full sentences if you want it to be accurate but there's a lot of ways you can use it that can be really helpful.

      Merci.
      OK, first, the Vas y thing - "Vas y" is actually something we say in English for this context sometimes, though not very often. Basically, I'm not necessarily even speaking "French" at that moment. A lot of Australians also say "Trezz bien" (pronouncing the S, and we know that it's wrong, it's kind of joke to deliberately mispronounce French).
      "Allons y" and "c'est parti" are not part of the English vernacular so we would regard that as a bit pretentious (at least when not on a language learning channel).
      But either way it's a deliberate "misuse" on my part, I've said it in a few videos, it's basically an in-joke with a few people, who said that if I say it then French people will correct me and I replied that when you make legitimate mistakes in videos, almost no one corrects them, but when you say that Duolingo isn't good (basically a fact) then you get corrected by every man and his dog. So the joke was to see how much I would have to say "vas y" before someone "corrected it" and the answer is about 60,000 views and at least 200 comments haha.
      Also it's a reference to the stock music that I use; I often use a track which the artist named "Vas y".
      Yeah sorry I don't really check Facebook much. En tous cas, je peux tout comprendre, et si tu veux, tu peux toujours écrire en français.

    • @diegoalejandrosalcedotolos2639
      @diegoalejandrosalcedotolos2639 Před 4 lety

      i really recommend to watch videos with the subtitles (in your target language), if you only listen to the videos, then you will be missing a lot as Steve Kaufmann says in this video: czcams.com/video/HS7k41esv_A/video.html (it's in spanish, but it has autogenerated subtitles in english); learning a language is mainly about listening and reading, then, if you did it the right way, you will speak and write because you have already learned how and when to use the words.
      Find strategies that you enjoy, it's the key for learning anything, its not this or that app, its about the way you learn, we all learn in different ways, so if you feel that something is working for you then use it!

    @RasmusKarlJensen Před 4 lety +2

    I have a bit of an awkward question, but this had happened to me relatively recently (a few weeks ago) and I'm not sure I've still fully recovered from it. How do you move forward learning a language when, during a conversation with someone in your TL, a native speaker thoroughly insulted every aspect of your abilities, shattered your confidence with communicating, and basically told you to stop trying to learn it?
    Also, separately but related, how detrimental is it when you've already accrued a lot of internal mistakes in your TL and you aren't sure how to fix them because you had started outputting too early? Should I follow Matt vs Japan's advice of going silent for a long period of time in order to fix language foundation?
    Thanks.

    • @daysandwords
      @daysandwords  Před 4 lety

      OK, so, firstly, sorry to hear that!
      I am not really sure about you personally (as in, how you motivate yourself etc.) but I think it's best to realise that this person is clearly a dickhead in all aspects of life. I've come across these people before. "I do everything better than you. You play the trumpet? Ha! My brother is way better than you!" In reality these people feel small and insignificant inside. They don't realise that this is why they're doing it, but there is possibly something in their language learning history that means they are bitter about the process. By telling you to stop learning it, they are really talking to their past selves (who haven't changed and won't change).
      I would try to find a really nice and kind teacher on iTalki or something (people are gonna call me sexist, but you've got a way better chance with a female) and just tell her the history of your learning and whatever, and they'll build you back up. This is simplified but I don't have time for a full essay on it right now.
      2nd question:
      Matt vs Japan recommends a silent period for this. But I think you can also just try to pay more attention to what natives say. e.g. I don't have this problem much because when I hear natives say something I am always like "Oh, I've been saying that wrong..."
      So for you, the prescription is: lots of input, lots of encouragement.
      BTW, what language?

    • @RasmusKarlJensen
      @RasmusKarlJensen Před 4 lety

      @@daysandwords The language is French, but it is the first language that I ever seriously attempted. I know you obviously study French as well, but for me, this language would be more akin to your experiences with Swedish, as that was the language you had said you made tons of mistakes in because you didn't know how to learn a language yet. That's my position with French, I've spent almost a year learning it, but a lot of that time was not used efficiently and I could've been much more proficient had I used MvJ's method from the beginning. Unfortunately, I only really started watching his (and as of a few days ago, your) videos more recently where they, along with that negative experience, told me that what I was doing before was not working (or, at least, not working as well as it could).
      As for that guy, what really got to me was why he said he was dissuading me (to put it in nice terms) from continuing: "I don't want low-IQ retards like yourself soiling my language." Now, I know I shouldn't put much stock into the opinions of random people on the internet, but that really got to me. I guess it felt like betrayal, even though I never met this person before. I understand, to an extent, being protective of your language, even I get annoyed at common grammar and spelling mistakes people make in English, but this felt exceptionally harsh and personal. I think I prefer speaking with Belgians, when it comes to French anyway; every Belgian I've spoken with has been really encouraging.
      I had started learning another language because of that experience and I plan to pursue it along with French. At first I thought I would never interact with French again, but I would later watch a video in French and come to realize that I understood just about everything and came to the conclusion that it wouldn't make sense to stop now, even if there's a risk that I'll have a repeat of that event again, I simply know too much at this point to make quitting seem feasible, even if part of me resents the language a little bit now that I feel "stuck" with it, as unfair to francophones everywhere as that is.

It’s only available on the web desktop version though, not on mobile app (which only does the 25% increments). I’ve done this while trying to learn to sing songs in my target language to great effect. I start at 65-70% of speed to really get the pronunciation and accent down, then I increase 5% daily until I get to 100%. I think you could do this with mimicking dialogues too.

      Ha, I only just found that - but I still prefer mine because of the shortcuts. Like going back by 1, 2, 3, 4 or any numbers of seconds has a shortcut.
      The problem with going too slowly is that it does that stretch thing that messes up the quality. I sometimes do it just for a single syllable or something but not so much for pronunciation. I use it most when transcribing.

    I'm trying to sign up for that $1 deal you talked about for newcomers but I can't seem to pay it. Do they only accept credit cards? 'cause I don't have one. Is there any other way to pay for it?

    Hi! Could you pls post the link to the ebook service you've mentioned? Would be greatly appreciated 🙇

      I think it was Bookmate but this is super old and I would now recommend Storytel which has both audiobooks and ebooks and is freakin' amazing.
      Oh Bookmate was free to upload your own books which I guess is something.

    I find it weird that noone talks about Memrise. It's really amazing and it was the best app of 2018 on PlayStore

      It's because user created courses aren't on the app anymore, which sucks because the website is the only place I can learn Ladino

      @@hyperion3145 I have the same account for the site and the app and whatever user created course I start on the computer is autmatically usable in the app too.

    does anyone know what music starts playing in the background around 5:25?

    • @daysandwords
      @daysandwords  Před 4 lety +1

      All my music is stock music from Soundstripe.com.
      If you want music for any project, I do recommend it, and using the code "LAMONT" gets you 10% off, plus it helps me out. :-)

    Thank you so much for this! I really needed it. I'm trying to learn Icelandic but my parents think it's a waste of time (and money). It's really hard to find any apps that support Icelandic, though (it isn't exactly a big language, so it makes sense). Does anyone maybe know of any good ones?

    idk why but i've invested a lot of times trying Anki (along with other resources) but it never worked at all for me, like really, 0 progression. i'm switching completely to naturally enjoy YT, movies, songs, and google (sometimes duolingo or lingodeer if i'm being lazy) and the progress has been a LOT better than before. After watching this i might try some of it, they look interesting

    Great vid, find it weird about making friends on italki, I don't really hear about that happening much and I feel like you have to be reasonably good at the language to use it?

    • @daysandwords
      @daysandwords  Před 2 lety

      Hm, I don't think so. I wasn't that great at French and I made friends on there. But it no longer has the free exchange partner function, which is lame.

    I would be willing to spend money to learn a language if I actually had money.. but I'm a secondary school student (I believe that's high school) who isn't old enough for a job yet but I'm half Dutch and I want to learn my Mum's native language. Thanks a lot for this video, it's really helped me.

    There is also a site called Pushkin Institute only for learning russian and it's very good, you can learn all the levels (A1-C2) for free.
