- It's getting to that time of year where you're thinking about summer open days at university and thinking about which universities to apply to. If you're thinking about Oxford or Cambridge University, you'll have to pick a college (or if you don't want to, you can send in an open application). Here are our tips on how to choose a college. Wow this is confusing, I always thought you just go to Cambridge or oxford university. I didn’t realise you need to apply to different colleges inside the university, I thought you just go to the ‘university’

The “traditional” view: you apply for X College or Y College at Cambridge. You are not accepted because, for that subject in that year, there are LOTS of highly qualified applicants. But if you are still good, you will be placed in the “Pool”. Some colleges will have a look at you and, if that year they are undersubscribed, you might get into say Z College. The standard view is that, after a few weeks at Z College you will be absolutely insistent that College is the best, and SOOO glad you ended up there.
But don’t be fooled into thinking you can get in with less-than-good exam results. You have to be good nowadays whichever College. You can’t “game the system”.
The degree is the same. The lectures are the same. The City is the same.
I had no idea about the Cambridge College to which I should apply so I took the advice of my Headmaster - a Cambridge man - and I am so glad he pointed me in the direction of Selwyn College. Three great years. I am sure my story would have been similar if I’d been to Oxford.

Where can I look up which colleges don't discriminate against students that take a gap year?
how do we find those statistics about how many people are in a class at the different colleges, or how many people of each course the different colleges accept? im looking at human sciences but some ppl say that some colleges don't accept many human scientists even though they offer the course

Hi Viola, do you think that the regional outreach ‘link colleges’ should make a difference to where you apply? I mean, I go to a state comprehensive where in its history 1 person has ever got a place at Oxbridge and didn’t get the grades - and this year have Cambridge come to our school and Oxford haven’t yet - but I was intrigued about the makeup of colleges and if the link schemes have any impact on the demography? Loved the video!
Atomic Elk hey! If you want Oxford to make a visit (doesn’t have to be a link college), then your sixth form can get in contact with the colleges themselves! I’m not sure about other colleges but I know that New College are happy to have a school come & visit and provide lunch, a tour and a workshop which are all student-led if you get in touch!! I’m not sure how much impact a link college would have - I know that colleges are assigned areas in the UK to target but I think it’s more just to encourage applicants to apply generally to Oxford, not necessarily the specific college itself. & I’d only apply to the link college if I actually liked it (but I guess if it was heavily involved with your school you’d inevitably be drawn towards it anyway). Can you get into a mature college if you already have a level 3 diploma but is currently working towards another (i already have access but i am going to do a levels). Video was extremely insightful thank you.
Cheles Bruno highly unlikely, oxford and cambridge will generally not accept vocational qualifications, apart from some art subjects

Hi guys, nice vid! I wanted to ask your advise on something if you dont mind. I just got accepted at Wolfson College for an mphil. This was not my first choice, quite the contrary, its everything i wasnt looking for in a college: modern, far out, all graduate. It also doesnt have any of the facilities or traditions I would associate with the university experience of Oxford. I am quite dissapointed by this and am seriously reconsidering my acceptence of my offer. Everyone always says you will love your college no matter what, but what if your college is everything you werent looking for? Can the wrong college (for me) also break the experience?

It would be remarkably stupid and short-sighted to turn down Oxford because of a college. Don’t do it, congrats on getting the Oxford offer. Grab it with both hands!
Hi! I'm Irish but was born in France and here the classes are organised by year of birth which means I'll be 17 when I go to college. Could you please tell me how could that work? I did check the Cambridge website and there is no real age requirements and I think I'll be considered 18 since I'll be soon after I start my course, let me know if you know anything more.
Yeah there are a few people who join before they turn 18. I know at least 4 from my college. It should be fine at any college.
P.S: I went to Fitzwilliam, so I know they are very chill with it. It’s also an incredible college with the most normal and down-to-earth people you’ll meet. It is truly a ‘home’ - which is what a college really should be (not some cold and imposing environment).

There are 31 colleges in Cambridge while Oxford has 38 colleges and 6 permanent private halls (pph's are part of Oxford university and are similar to an oxford college but are run by a religious order or an institution not by university administration.)

I need help. I want to do medicine and I love Cambridge. (I’ve been for summer school and for school/access trips). Both schools used to have a programme where you can graduate after three years and transfer to London (where I’m from, and love). I wanted to go to Cambridge to do medicine and get a bachelor and move to London after three years, because they have a better clinical program. But Cambridge stopped. I’m thinking about Oxford because it’s more of a city, than Cambridge and I do love city life. But Cambridge has a nice atmosphere.
{edit: Also, medicine is six years (which is looooooong) and I kind of don’t want to live in a small area for six years (from 18-24). For me, unless it’s London, Manchester or Birmingham, it’s small. }
Cambridge or Oxford?
Ive been hanging out with a llottt of medics this year, and I hear your struggle. A lot of people pick Oxford for medicine because they wanna move to somewhere else. But lool, Cambridge 3rd year for medicine lets you specialise in ANY degree whereas Oxford makes you specialise in a subject similar to the medicine field. A lot of the medics go of to Adebrooks site which is a bit more on the south side of Cambridge, so you don't feel like you're stuck in Cambridge. and tbh I don't even see any 4th-6th year medics coz they always in the hospital or doing their electives in other countries (one btich went to BARBADOS FOR HER PLACEMENT). I would speak to some medics, such as Ali Abdal on youtube. But regardless they obviously great..

Apple Rave if you apply to balliol you are very likely to be assigned to a different college even if you do get into oxford since it’s so oversubscribed. If you need any advice on applying I’m happy to help! X

Wtf why so much emphasis on whether someone has been to private school or if they’re white! This kind of language is what segregates races and supports the class system. You can’t ask for inclusion and diversity if you plan only to keep within a tight knit group of BAME. If it was the other way around, and a white person who went to private school said they didn’t want to be in a place with a lot of BAME people from state schools there’d be outrage. You are all at Oxbridge, so stop using this dividing language.
