Now this Anime I can ride with. Well written characters, love the chemistry of the group, love how they incorporate real world cooking techniques into a fantasy context, and I love how they disguise this cooking anime as a fantasy adventure.

Dungeon Meshi is 100% about the human experience of eating. Emblematic of this is the last line of the series...

The episode where Marcille argues with the orcs as theyare all making bread was really neat, a literal example of two enemies "breaking bread" together. Starts with an argument, and ends with a meal.

I am amazed that you managed to grasp the themes of this story based on only anime episodes so far. You are so right on the way food brings people together and there are more and more such topics the story gives as it goes on. Dungeon meshi takes something as simple as an act of eating and explores it in all directions

  • @otakukoneko
    @otakukoneko Před 3 měsíci +28

I am genuinely so excited for more of this series because it is such a wonderful examination of humanity under absolutely ridiculous circumstances. You really hit the nail on the head at the end regarding the primordial and communal act of sharing a meal together. In the middle of all of this chaos and through whatever strife happens in this story, there is still time made to eat because it’s important to eat.

Anime has always loved food. Since Y2K, every single anime that has a scene in which somebody eats something, they spend a whole minute worth of animating frames and writing dialogue to praise every aspect of how this flavour blends with that texture and whatever. And before Y2K, while they didn't break down the food into emotional analysis that borders on religous worship, they still show the utter joy and delight at eat, or even just seeing, food.
There have been some Isekai that make food the focus (like the one where the protag isekai cheat is having access to internet shopping, so he goes ahead and tames boss-level monster Fenrir with his cooking (can't remember the name of that show)). But non have elevated food into religous fevor more than Dungeon Meshi.

Something I love about Delicious in Dungeon is that there isn’t the typical fan service. Marcille and Falin were having a bath, where a lot of their bodies were shown but they weren’t unneededly oversexualized. None of the female characters were used as things for male viewers to drool over. No pantie shots, well except for Senshi. Honestly kinda funny anytime he gets flipped over and his underwear is just in the open air. I think it is mostly because the author is woman, she didn’t include the oversexualization of character (even if they are adults). Just a breath of fresh air honestly, one my favorite anime’s absolutely.

Alright. First there was a time I called it medieval fantasy, but this find of fantasy is define as Sword & Sorcery with I discover that recently. And you should use that too when there's fantasy and magic (not always action are during medieval times). Second Farlin isn't mage. She's a healer and she known great spells like healing, teleportation, blessing, exorcism and even resurection.

I wish there was more anime like this
1 - I like that this show does not sexualise characters to the point it effects characters (Fire force with that one girl)
2- I like how it builds its world
    Its the same with Frieren
Anime tends to really stick to its cliches and tropes and rarely evolves beyond that
Once you have seen one fantasy anime you have seen most of them
Once you have seen one Shonen anime you have seen most of them
Once you have seen one Isekai anime you have seen most of them
Very few genres do not suffer from this issue
But shows like Frieren and Dungeon Meshi prove that you can not follow the tropes and still succeed
I think this is just due to how much managers effect production in the mang industry
Like how the most common sighted advice in shonen jump competitions is
    - Sexualise female characters
-Female MC, bad change it too male
-Female character is more powerful than male character. bad change it
    It constrains creativity.

What you said resonated with the manga finale, which is seriously one of the best closures I have ever read. This is no easy task for a 14-volume manga that had run for 10 years. Considering how many manga have actually never ended before the author gave up/died/still going, or ended it prematurely because it was cancelled, or were given a shitty end because editorial forced it to overstay its welcome, the ending that is the entirety of Volume 14 if you think about it, was truly amazing. For the popular audience, several scenes spelled out in words the overarch themes of the Meshi, but were presented in a light and airily manner, dare I even use the word sublime. Were it a Hollywood or fucking Marvel property it would have ended with some pretentious assholes shouting on top of the hill like some goddamn Moses. May be that's what I find so annoying about Western properties today, be it the MCU/DCU, the endless parade of Tolkien fantasies, Harry Potter YA garbage (East of West here, especially the isekai stuff... except for Samurai in Another World), century old vampire shuffles and re-shuffles, please-die-already Star Wars and zombie flicks, and in general not-another-sequel/remake/re-franchise (Mad Max, King Kong, Saw, Fast & Furious, now even Dune and John Wick). They have nothing to say, or what they have to say are muddled, preachy, even infuriating but always forgettable (try any Disney and Pixar lately?). So thank god for Meshi, Frieren, and a few other popular or about to be popular manga/anime titles (that would surely send most self-respecting gate-keepers into conniption if I were to mention the name), for filling in that giant hole here in the West that we call "poverty of the Imagination".
