It may seem like the HL2 Betas contain way too many weapons, but part of the original story progression involved Freeman losing and rebuilding his arsenal two or three times over the course of the game. So, while giving yourself all of the weapons may make it seem like there's a bunch of redundant ones, you were only ever meant to have one or two of each type at a time.
wingdairu hmm
In the end, we technically did get a version of that. You have to rebuild your arsenal during all the Episodes.
I kinda like that idea, would probably make it feel like playing through all the expansions hl1 had, but I’m sure they decided to go with the episode for that angle instead.
@@wolcamophone4783 Episodes 1-3 were supposed to be full-length sequel to the HL2.
thats dumb im glad they removed that

in the mod "dark interval" theres a section with a manhack arcade that lets you play as a manhack, albeit very colourful and flashy
Fun fact, it may seem like a arcade game but you were actually controlling a man hack killing real people. The combine were freaking evil in the beta dude
@@Slash766 The combine are still evil as hell in retail, in the beta they were just needlessly sadistic anf horrific.
InkyGhoul I mean, they are aliens that seem to hate humans
@@Slash766 I sort of prefer retail in that regard, they don’t “hate” humans, they just don’t understand them, we’re like ants to them except they’ve enslaved us.
The beta Combine were horribly written in my opinion, I always found the cold clinical evil to be much more befitting of them, than the brutishness of the beta, showing you the oppressiveness of the combine with the subtly of a thrown brick.
Now Vinny has to replay beta minimalist mod after getting the context for all of the beta stuff

Originally, the Hopwire grenade would've been taken from the Alien Assassin, another scrapped enemy, seen at 59:00. It was basically a Fast Zombie times 10, throwing smoke grenades, the aforementioned Hopwires, doing sneak attacks from behind with throwing knives and it's claws, all the while climbing on every wall and ceiling imaginable.

The Borealis is one of those mythical videogame levels/areas that we can only theorize and speculate about what it could have been.
Kinda like the "Unicorn Fountain" from Ocarina of Time, "Wood Zone" from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, that weird version of Pinna Park with actual human beings as NPCs in early Super Mario Sunshine, and the destroyed Onett/Fourside from EarthBound 64.

The funny thing is in the airex map with the elevator ride, the only way to progress was to do a leap of faith through the window as a gunship followed you. Some things in Half Life 2 were going to be really hollywood-esque

I really do hope that HL:A takes more from the beta in a meta way as has been hinted, and while I understand people not being jazzed about VR-only, I both sympathize with Vinny and have really high hopes for HL:A. I've never tried VR and have a lot going against me, both physically and financially, but I still have some optimism for it as a worthy Half-Life game even if it dovetails with Valve's mission for a trendsetting VR title.
To clarify (and acknowledge I actually got an early comment on a Vinesauce vid on a topic I care a lot about), I'm nearly blind, pretty uncoordinated, and have a potato-grade pc that was barely a gaming rig in 2009, but I STILL would give this an honest try, even sinking a boatload of money into the rig to play it. Good thing Bitcoin's crashed and used gaming hardware is getting cheaper and cheaper.
HL:A is why I'm getting an index this christmas
@@LtSprinkulz Valve: Mission Accomplished
@@LtSprinkulz Funny enough if you get an index before the end of the year you get Alyx for free lol
To even top that they are trying to make it compatible with all vr sets.
Honestly valve should release a thing called developers cut where they kinda fix up the visuals but also doing some developer commentary.
I wonder if he'll do that Dark interval mod, sure it's not complete but least it has the beta story line.
Or that if he gets a Valve Index, you get Half life Alyx for free.
12:48 - They didn't completely cut the Stalkers - you meet them in Episode 1 when trying to stop the Citadel core meltdown.
Aren't they also just around in the citadel in hl2 as well?
@@nickie115 Yep. They almost seem like 'workers' as the are seen repairing or working on gunships and crab synths.
Stalkers were never cut, they're in HL2 and HL2EP1 as background characters, no-longer main antagonists
My maplist just got quickly brushed off in the end of the stream.
Haha.. totally didnt spent 2 days on it all for nothing.. hah.
Yeeted
37:52 thank you again vinny for answering my serous question didn't mean for it to come off as pessimistic or what ever.
he provided some good insight into how to innovate in a gaming setting.
So apparently the reason there were so many guns with the same function and role was because at different points in the original story line you would lose your weapons.
You can see this kinda with the melee weapons. Ice pick for example would be for when you were on the Borealis which was actually more towards the beginning of the game
Free TVs!
funny hahaha
cant wait for the inevitable announcement of the Valve Creation Club, with both microtransactions and a monthly subscription fee
17:48 “Is that what I think it is?”
I dunno, you tell me! I think it’s a later resemblance to the X-Mas build of early Team Fortress 2 Invasion (Which btw I found on an alpha version and sure enough it’s still there. Same map, just different shades and textures a bit)
Gmod in the source 2 engine and VR is going to be crazy.
I heard people say that GMod will not move to Source 2 since it's developers are making a game like it for the Unreal Engine... I am not if it's true though, and I hope that it isn't. GMod in Source 2 would be so sick!
@@cloroxhammer3289 Well, if the sdk is released with alyx, they better rethink their engine decision.
@@cloroxhammer3289 so 2 years later and Garry Newman is making S&Box all within Source 2. Through this work he has implemented a working real-time fluid engine (something source just never had) TONS of insane optimizations, native VR support (expanded upon it), among tons of other crazy under-the-hood features.
We will likely see a public beta or early access sometime later this year.
S&Box will never be Gmod2 imo, it's far too different compared to Gmod.
Was waiting for this, thanks
Vinny seems like such a chill guy same with his fans, I’d love to meet him one day
A lot of this stuff made it into the game somehow but was heavily reworked through playtesting to make it actually playable and coherent.
Episode 1 literally featured segments straight out of the leaked betas and Episode 2 was a completely reworked version of the wastelands section to some degree. Episode 3 as far as I'm aware was mostly original and had little to no connection to the arctic levels in the betas aside from names.
Vinny is big man.
Good stream.
This makes me want to go back to making my own FPS game so badly...
It's really interesting to see how much half life and hl2 bled together during the development of hl2. Part of me always assumed that they just started from scratch with all new tech and assets. Makes more sense I guess that you would see lots of what they had already utilized in early development and builds of the game.
can someone show to vinny the Dark Interval Project? i think he will be very interested on that retelling of the beta story
This is so strange to look at modified Source engine for hl2beta 2001/2002 because it's like a hl2 classic beta lol. Strange for me because I ve seen only 2003 E3 build, not 2002/2001 builds
so, considering Portal started from a mod for HL1/2, i wonder if those laser enemies are what the turrets were in the initial demo build
I feel like vinny should try out Smod Redux. Both fun and hilarious.
DANG IT VINNY ya missed that wasteland launcher at the very end.
I think he also might have missed the gunship using its underbelly cannon attack, which was not implemented into any level and went unused, but can be inserted into levels using Hammer, and there's also a command to make a gunship use it if you know the gunship's name.
@@KirbyMario12345_939 beetlejuice beetlejuice beetlejuice
To be fair, the gunship does look like a beetle.
it'd be cool if valve released a "new" half life game but it's half life 2 with all the cut content they were going to add, like the cremators, the kids working for the cremators, all that good stuff they ended up cutting :( it'd be cool
Well new half life is comming hopefully with some beta features
@@JukoYT new half-life, Half Life Alyx, carried none of the tone or charm of the previous games to me.
All of its "quirky" humor and nonthreatening enemies besides a meme one named Jeff only made me think it was trying to be more like portal 2 than half life.
The only difference is... Portal 2 is actually funny and charming.
Raising the Bar Redux is basically a beta themed version of Retail, while Dark Interval is trying to basically just be a complete version of HL2B.
you can use the index controllers with another headset, just need tracking stations and flashed steam controller dongles
17:53 that's a gmod map
47:23 valve should make that a free to play game on steam
the map was ported from the beta to gmod, not the other way around
I played Half-Life 2 (Orange Box) on the 360 only a few times but this stuff still interests me. The fact that Borealis was already a level in the beta is insane to me.

JP Trespasser was definitely not ready for prime time, but you can't deny that what they were trying to do was revolutionary. I would absolutely play a VR adaptation of it, even without updated graphics.
I would love to see a mod that combines (heh) the official Half Life 2 campaign with some of this beta art style, character design, and cut content spliced in? I love the more oppressive atmosphere and darker art direction. Maybe even add some of the more interesting beta weapons into the full game and smooth out some of the more rushed parts of the late game. Just a nice balance between the stuff we got and didn't get.
The Beta aesthetics mod keeps the retail levels, but swaps out textures, models, and sounds with beta assets.
Dark Interval and Raising the Bar: Redux both do that, Redux is closer to the retail ver while Dark is 100% focused on being the Beta.
Coterminous looks like it has potential
I found it very disappointing he only sent on average 10 seconds per map.
Some of those, like vertigo, actually had a lot of decent things to see.
I wonder why they cut out the additional citizen voices like in the sniper level.

4:44 You know that Forgotten Weapons guy? He has a video on this.
It's the HK21. You know the G3 rifle? Yeah basically a belt fed version of that.
The Rift S is the best value on the market right now, hands down. If you're gonna buy a VR headset you want on that will be good for other games than the one you want it for. There are a lot of good Oculus exclusive games.
Yoooo, the hopwire is fucking cool.
36:10 half life uses gimmicks but uses them so well it becomes the norm. They did that with physics in hl2 and I suspect theyre going to do the same thing with vr for half life alyx. HLA will be so good that it will take vr from being gimmicky and not worth it and catapult it into a standard for all gamers. Hell, the mere announcement of it was enough for me (who isnt even old enough to have a job and make consistent money) to go out and buy a vr headset. Just got a samsung hmd odyssey+ on a black friday sale (im pretty sure its the most cost-effective vr headset on the market right now). Even though ive spent almost half my savings on this headset, I dont feel too bad because I know im going to get my moneys worth after hla releases and a bunch of new quality vr titles follow suit.
How'd that work out then?
When Vinny discovered the hopwire, I hid under my desk. What I heard was absolute amusement and terror as he walked into the wires and joker laughed not once...but twice. Good job, Vinny. You really know how to present beta games in a way nobody can.
Just me or has hunt down the freeman made you think about the way gman said black messa?
If anyone says black maisa I will think about messa
I get that he wasnt trying to do an in depth look at the beta, but I do wish he took a LITTLE more time on some things. Same with the effort. In many occasions he just gave up.
Vinny, I hope you see this. I am/was at the part of you talking about HL:A. They said if this one doesn't do well, they won't be doing anything else with HL in it's whole. So if HL:A bombs, we won't get HL3/HL2:E3. Because they said if it does well, they will push forward with more things, and since HL3/HL2:E3 was in dev for a long time, we might get it because of HL:A.
Honestly, either way they will come back to it some day. It's a matter of when.
What a retarded move, let's make a VR exclusive half life game and hope it does as well as half life 2..
"Buy this and we'll make episode 3 promise" LOL
These betas also stolen/leaked/recreated/fixed up by John Freeman- I mean, John Thief.
It was actually original supposed to take place in Seattle
my favorite part is when he pauses on the worst sound instead of just unpausing or moving

I always wonder if something will blow me away like HL2 did. I feel like in the future I’ll feel like how the people between HL1&2 did but, I can’t think of anything that will top the feeling that came from the addition of physics, the facial expressions and interactive environment.
Where to from there? Heavy water theme and show off liquid simulation? Tie it in with fabric simulation with tearing and interactions?
I kinda know how you feel. Half-Life made such lasting innovations that it's easy to take it for granted now, and it's hard to see what'll come next.
Where could I find this? I'd like to give it a try myself.

@@Sierra19204 Aight.
It looks weirdly retro, but I like it. It looks a lot less blocky than the final version. The AUC power (sprinting etc) looks a little bit ugly and basic but otherwise I like it a lot. The font they used in the final game for health and ammo looks really shit imo.
17:13 I mean he isn't wrong

Oh and same thing with the crowbar
Those betas are legit or just a fan-made recreation?
Andy R they are real but fans have fixed them
you should've played played them sequentially.
You should play Missing Information Global Pack. This is the best mod that recreates Beta.
Raising the Bar Redux and Dark Interval take that spot nowadays I think. Idk about back then though.
Its clear that Vinny is a little skeptical about Half-Life: Alyx, but he seems to be hesitant when expressing concern because of how rabid Half-Life fans have become over the whole situation.
Skeptical, but still pretty blown away that trailer.
Never go full fanboy
@@vinesauce I guess i can understand since it means Valve might be back into making games, but much like Metroid Prime 4, I dont think most of the original devs are working on the game, like Laidlaw the weiter, which might not be a massive deal, but still a little concerning. And if they are back, and Half-Life Alyx does well, would that mean any potential Half-life 3 would be exclusive to VR or would they go back to traditional controls? If Half-life Alyx does badly, would it mean scrapping Half-life in the assumption that no one is interested in the franchise or would Half-Life go back to the traditional style?

Vinny could really do with a crash course on how to use the Source engine console more efficiently, to more quickly type things and navigate it.
I understand how people don't really like that the new half life is VR. But without VR they probably wouldn't have made a game at all.
The way VR forces you to rethink game design is probably very interesting for a passionate devolper. How you have to prevent your player from throwing up. But also the player interactions with virtual objects. The way scale is presented to the player in a realistic way.
The pure amount of immersion archiveable through a combination of these features, might make you forgot that you are in this fake world.
Design you just can't pull off with a mouse and keyboard.
This isn't really like the wii, some devolpers used it like one, but you can do so much more.
The price is a hard pill to swallow. But you don't have to buy an index/pimax/reverb to have a great time. A samsung odyssey plus can be had for 250 dollar, it includes everything you need even the controller. And it doesn't require an elaborate setup.
People seem to think that there are no games for it. But this is probably because they aren't looking for them. Oculus gave a bunch of dev studios a lot of money to make VR games. Some of them triple a studios like insomniac. And smaller devs have made great titles like beat saber.
0:58 isn't that the plague inc. theme?
No it's a song from final hl2

Idk, I guess the whole idea of VR just seems like a gimmick to me. I think I'd be more interested in the new half life if it wasn't for that. I agree also, it's too crazy expensive right now.

It's just something in there as something you can do, not something that's part of the game in it's lowest or highest forms of play. That distinction is what sets apart things that look gimmicky like rocket jumping in Quake and Team Fortress 2 from actual gimmicks like taunts in fighting games.
