Seeing all the old companions again was wonderful, but it really hammers home how much of a raw deal most of the modern companions got. Rose trapped in a parallel universe, Martha and Mickey off fighting aliens, Donna had her memory wiped, Amy and Rory trapped in the past, Clara and Bill basically losing their humanity and left to wander the universe, and Nardole left to defend against a Cyberman invasion.

This whole scene was such a fun one. It was great fan service to see a bunch of companions again, but the real fun part of this is what it implies. The Doctor regularly says that they never forget any of their companions and this is the companions never forgetting The Doctor. And this is a neat thing for the future. No matter how many more companions The Doctor has and no matter where they end up going, there will be a place where they can keep meeting up and sharing the stories of their adventures.

    Here's an interesting thought...
How about having a companion we haven't met yet show up? Knowing their version of the Doctor, but being unsure of what they couldn't or shouldn't say. Spoilers, indeed!

Didn't Mel technically do that in the classic run?

@Daniel Diaz True, though as I recall it was more like they skipped over Mel meeting the Doctor, treated it as if it had already happened, and then they were reviewing it as a past event. I was thinking of someone walking in, no one (including the viewers) has any idea who they are, and they talk about traveling with the Doctor. I guess River Song fits the bill for that, but she'd be considered a special case (as usual! 😁).

The thing is though that for some reason the doctor seems to pick up their companions chronologically to whatever time it is in real life. So by the time we’re seeing this companions adventures it would be a few years in the past that the doctor picked them up from. It just seems a little confusing having the companion be from like 3 years in the past because it’s just enough for you to forget that it’s not the present only to be confused when past references come up.

Interesting idea. It could be done pretty easily with a Companion of either the Eighth Doctor or the War Doctor, since we know so little about either of them.

This was such a beautiful moment, it was wonderful seeing Ian, Jo and Mel back. I nearly teared up when I saw Ian.

I thought it was wonderful to have that group of former companions together I loved it.
