20:18 there's also different levels of Lego brickmasters.
When you start out basically you're given a map for like a little house and you'll build that little house a hundred times or more.
When you get a little bit more experience, and you move up. You're not making just a little house anymore now you might be making a 2-ft tall princess peach, and then they want you to make a hundred of them, oh by the way you're not designing it You've got a map that's all laid out for you and it has to be exactly like that map and if one brick goes in the wrong place you either need to fix that one brick or if it can't be fixed the whole thing gets taken apart and you start over.
Now you have a lot of experience now you are given a map for a huge green and yellow arch to make, it really doesn't look like anything, but you have to make 100+ of them all exactly like the map/design shows, it turns out to be one of the pieces of the dragon that comes out of a wall then goes back in.
Each time you move up you get bigger more complet designs to follow, and have to make a ton of them, you have to make so many because they are for displays at all the logo stores. Eventually you might be moved up to a design position, or you might not.
I had a couple friends that worked at Lego Land in California, one had a ride maintenance job, so not part of this. One got a job as a builder and started through the process I've described, he said it was "fun" but tedious, the second was the guy that I worked with in retail and he heard about a tryout for a Lego design builder.
He went to the tryouts thinking that he was going to end up with a job like our other friend, but this was a tryout for one of the people that actually designed the models. At the tryout there was people that just filled out an application and then there were people that had been working there for years building models. When they got to the point of competing for the job of the person making designs they were told something along the lines of, make something to show us your skill and abilities you've got four hours, GO! Then they start building what they can in their 4 hours The guys that had worked there for a very long time had an idea of the kind of things that they build so the Guy I knew that worked there for a couple years started off building a building with columns and all kinds of neat stuff. The guy that was there trying out didn't know what to do so he just started building a big ball He knew that it was difficult to make a round shape using Legos and he just went okay well it'll be a big ball, so he made a beach ball that was striped blue white red and yellow like standard beach balls. In his 4 hours he got about a 2 ft beach ball built. The friend that worked there had an amazing looking building It wasn't the White House but kind of like that other people had great looking stuff too things like a cartoon mermaid and that kind of stuff The guy that made the beach ball won the job.
I don't think this is how they fill all of their positions for the people that design the models but I can imagine that after working there for several years Just copying other people's designs over and over again and then somebody comes in for a tryout essentially and gets a job that's considerably above yours that would be incredibly frustrating. It amazed me that that's how Lego did it because if I was the Lego company I would be worried about my builders quitting after that.
