I saw them perform Pale Horse last night. Concert totally blew my mind. Hadn't seem the Pumpkins since the 1st Lollapalooza. They rock today like they did back then. They rocked the way they always will.
Lyrics: If I was to listen I’d turn back Give up on my reasons Forgive up the past You think I’d swallow that? Bearing weight in ceilings Just to stop and ask of Thorazine Thorazine, Thorazine, Thorazine They give you this They take away that Thorazine There’ll be no others There’ll be no long lost friends Empty on the insides Empty of a last pretense To stand by on feeling of the end So many lives A runaway life So many lies When they locked you up they shut me out Gave me the key so I could show you round Yet we were not allowed Omens of the daydream But caught as you’re bound in Thorazine Thorazine, Thorazine, Thorazine They give you this They take away that Thorazine There’ll be no rallies There’ll be no long lost friends Caught on a spotlight Running out of present tense To fix by a feeling of an end So many lives A runaway life Please come back Please come back Please come back Pale Horse Please come back Please come back Please come back Pale Horse Please come back Please come back Please come back Pale Horse Please come back Please come back Please come back Pale Horse
@@OpalMoonstone247I think it’s about a mentally ill person. He describes how they try to convince him to give up on what he thinks and just take the medication “Thorazine” which is Chlorpromazine, an antipsychotic. As far as I know and I can understand, it has several adverse effects and he describes how he feels like they take away something important to him through that medication which keeps him caught. Maybe he feels physical or mental numbness among many other possible things. In the end he describes a pale horse which may be the personification of death, the fourth apocalypse horseman. A pretty good analogy. So basically he’s begging for his death due his suffering.
mesmerizing.....this is indeed a hark back to the pumpkins of old - so corgan's direction now, with this new band line up, is spot on..... such a joy to hear fresh pumpkins material being THIS good....and the same said for the rest of the album as well... mesmerizing
i think this is the greatest song i heard in the last few years, my interest in music is back. maybe i was hanging around with the "wrong" music too long..
This song is one of Billy's saddest and most personal songs. Its about his mother...she was commited to a mental hospital when billy was just a kid. Thorazine was handed out like candy at asylums especially back in the day...hes singing about her bound to a cot and he pleading for her to come back to him. Once you understand the contents of the lyrics it really gives the song a lot of emotional weight.
The first time I listened to this song, I thought it was about D'arcy, especially because after the Pumpkins she became a horse breeder and had many drug-related problems. Either way, this is one of the best things Billy has written in this century.
Ricardo Longo That's what I thought, too. I thought it was about him considering letting her back into his life or the band ("If I was to listen/I'd turn back... Forgive up the past... You think I'd swallow that?"). But I think the mother interpretation is more honest. That said, as anyone who's seen photo's of D'Arcy or read about her arrests can attest, the other interpretation probably isn't that far off. Let's stick with D'Arcy interpretation, just to piss her off ;)
I am enjoying introducing the greatness of the Smashing Pumpkins to my beautiful daughter . We listen to this together , what a wonderful gift . Thank you Billy and the Smashing Pumpkins .
This gives me a nostalgic feeling with the Dutch air assault (red berets) they used this song for one of their awesome documentary series. (It is called: "lichting 12-8")
People keep complaining about new Smashing Pumpkins, what's wrong with this? Yeah, it's slow, but they've always had slow songs lol. That's usually how rock acts age anyway
Imagine how many times he's faked it for just one more show through good times and bad! Props to Billy and Company! It's a Long Way to the Top .. if you want to rock and roll!
They sound good. A lot better than the music I here going down the street. You know, the kind that sounds like something or someone is banging on the trunk trying to escape.
This song makes me think of the sort of lament for a former way of life that was full of novelty, mystery, excitement, and a reckless searching that led to madness. It is the parting with the freedom of that former life; the Garden is closed, however, and once a threshold is crossed there is no returning. One can no longer heed those ephemereal voices, to do so would be to go back to that depth of madness, but to live a life of hollow quasi-comfort on thorazine... it will be never be like b4.
WOW!!! I hope they stick this track on the next version of "Red Dead Redemption". This is a fantastic tribute to Spaghetti Western soundtrack greats like Ennio Morricone who were way ahead of their time. So awesome to hear great artists like Billy Corgan continue this tradition at least in this one song. Damn...I need to find myself a good Dan Electro baritone guitar ASAP. This song inspires me to start writing in that obscure and ignored (but AWESOME) music genre.
Nah I completely agree. Today the Business isn't about Music at all, it's just about making Money now, and the majority of Artist have the same frame of mind. As you said, back then, Musicians were more of a Family with each other and respected their work along with everyone elses. The 80's definitely hold a special place is many peoples lives, and always will. Each decade the Music industry just gets worse and worse, apart from a few surprises here and there on rare occasions.
Bit of stretch....I get what you're saying with the tempo and the piano melody, but that's about it. It's not uncommon for artists/songwriters to use bits and pieces from previous work to create new material. But Mike and Nicole add a new dimension to this that wasn't in the Mellon Collie out take.
This whole album is a choice to make SP relevant to now. Artistry of BC. I do miss JC. But I too am an lead/guitar which bonded w/ a world class jazz drummer in rock... nothing like it.
This is my first time listening to this album, and what a fantastic album it is. Occaisonaly a little heavy on the keyboards for my liking, but that is my only gripe.
I know how you feel. I have stopped looking for another great Pumpkins album. It isn't coming. However, Billy will leave us a great song here and there. He's, at the very least very prolific, and over the years, we'll end up with a few diamonds in the rough.
I think this was Billys song to virgin records for handing him down for aging as a rockstar and the company wanting the new younger bands to make the company money again, not thinking SP had the songs anymore.. how wrong they are.. Billy is the genius of my generation not eddie vedder not chris cornell.. because they dont have the songs in my opinion.... rawk on 4 life pumpkinhead since 93
As a millennial who grew up idolizing Billy, I can say my understanding of many of his later and best pieces are related to the death of his mother. I agree with the commenter who talked about Billy’s mom. I think I recall most of the album (CD) Ava Adore being much about loss of love, also meaning his mother’s love after her passing. One of my favorite pieces is “Crestfallen.”
I cannot get over how much I love this song. Very beautiful. Billy Corgan is one of my favorite lyricists and this song is just a gem.
This song is pure gold
1979 baby!🥳🥳
Appreciating this album in a whole new amazing way in 2020!
Me too very much. The rest had to catch up. Wondrous time. Wondrous album as are the rest.
This album wasn’t as good in 2012 for some reason can’t explain but fn rocks in 2022 turn it up on track 2
This is my favorite track from this album. It's so amazingly soothing.
it's actually a pretty good album
I saw them perform Pale Horse last night. Concert totally blew my mind. Hadn't seem the Pumpkins since the 1st Lollapalooza. They rock today like they did back then. They rocked the way they always will.
This is definitely my favorite song from Oceania.
Caveman D-N-A mine is my love is winter
I listened to this song and most of the album some time last year. It was a great symphony of music that Billy Corgan and his band made!!
Lyrics:
If I was to listen I’d turn back
Give up on my reasons
Forgive up the past
You think I’d swallow that?
Bearing weight in ceilings
Just to stop and ask of Thorazine
Thorazine, Thorazine, Thorazine
They give you this
They take away that
Thorazine
There’ll be no others
There’ll be no long lost friends
Empty on the insides
Empty of a last pretense
To stand by on feeling of the end
So many lives
A runaway life
So many lies
When they locked you up they shut me out
Gave me the key so I could show you round
Yet we were not allowed
Omens of the daydream
But caught as you’re bound in Thorazine
Thorazine, Thorazine, Thorazine
They give you this
They take away that
Thorazine
There’ll be no rallies
There’ll be no long lost friends
Caught on a spotlight
Running out of present tense
To fix by a feeling of an end
So many lives
A runaway life
Please come back
Please come back
Please come back Pale Horse
Please come back
Please come back
Please come back Pale Horse
Please come back
Please come back
Please come back Pale Horse
Please come back
Please come back
Please come back Pale Horse

Thank you for posting the lyrics. I always liked this song and album but I don't know the meaning of the lyrics. Anyone?

Im buying this album today. Or tonight, tonight.
Palel horse, like a collage of floating music across a blue landscape - still blue and gentle melodies afloat upon it
can't stop listening to this, so good, so so good
Very Cure sounding. Awesome at that. Much better than some of their harder stuff IMO.
Baffling Barnacles I love the cure, Smashing pumpkins and the cure are national treasures

beautiful....billy's best work in years...classic, gorgeous....i live it. billy is a genius.

+J Money It is to me the darkest and saddest song ever written by Billy Corgan.
That is really sad 😞
I learned about this songs meaning from this post a year ago. Read it again after knowing more from my own research. Thanks mate.
Amei esta canção desde a primeira vez que ouvi...causou me comoção!

1:30 could have been strait out of mellon collie and the infinite sadness
A classic Billy Chant
+TheDanimator o so right would have fit right in!
It fits perfectly right where it is.
Billy Corgan's lyrics are always deep. Good stuff!!
Very profound poet. He takes me to many different dimensions. All as beautiful as the next. He is a beautiful soul and a wounded healer.
such an Adore vibe... which I never saw coming while listening to the album for the first go-around. a nice surprise.
Very good hit🤝
Great music after all this years. Great load of optimistic and positive energy. Thanks for this, Billy. Great job.
This album is actually brilliant....It's not as odd and open as their old ones, why is it so good??
I am enjoying introducing the greatness of the Smashing Pumpkins to my beautiful daughter . We listen to this together , what a wonderful gift . Thank you Billy and the Smashing Pumpkins .

This song reminds me of Adore, in good ways!
This gives me a nostalgic feeling with the Dutch air assault (red berets) they used this song for one of their awesome documentary series. (It is called: "lichting 12-8")
This song is so good ❤❤❤

I cant listen to this enough.
Nice re-worked version of Have Love Will Travel, the 'Unknown Instrumental' from the Mellon Collie sessions.

Agree 500%
The Pumpkins always hit me in the feels. I was sold the first time I knew their band name and have been since.
BROOKS 74
This ALBUM should have won a Grammy... no doubt.
This and Melloncollie!
He actually wrote it for his mother.
