- Back in the mid-1980s, a 12-issue maxi-series tackled complex issues about superheroes and the role they can and should play in their fictional worlds. It was dark, violent and a complete departure from most of the mainstream comics of that era.
No, we’re not talking about Watchmen. This is about another groundbreaking series - Squadron Supreme!

The Squadron Supreme Was Years Ahead Of Its Time! | Behind The Panel | SYFY WIRE - Zábava
One of the most underrated works in comics. It never got the true exposure it deserves but if you read it you can’t help but be pulled in the story ! Honestly this comic series would make a incredible live action series
@Terrance Milo really? someone made this a series? like animation?
👍
Squadron Supreme needs their own ongoing series set in their own universe even better if it's the SUPREME POWER version
I read this when it came out in the 80s. Probably my favorite run of that decade. I was a DC fanboy and couldn't believe Marvel had just done the best Justice League story ever. I've turned tons of people onto this series over the years and have always been sincerely thanked afterward. The most slept on book of the past 40 years!
A true treasure
No its called plagiarism. And no the squadron supreme are nowhere as good or as iconic as the justice league
Plagiarism is copying something that has already been written. To my knowledge that story had never been written. You can call it a rip off, homage or pastiche but not plagiarism.
@@justinfive4206 so the justice league has not already been written? The squadron supreme is a shameless rip off.
@@sladewilson377 Not every story of the justice league. By your logic every time a new writer takes over the title it would be plagiarism. Gruenwald wrote that story for the Justice League, his favorite comic of all time. He worked at Marvel so he had to settle for Squadron Supreme. Plagiarism would be if he took an existing JLA story and copied it which is not what happened.
the first time I learned about the Squadron Supreme was in Avengers Assemble. maybe not the best way to be introduced to the series, but got me interested enough to look up the characters
👍
I purchased the series during its initial run. It was different from everything else at the time. It made me think and look at superheroes in a new light. I forgot that it pre-dated WATCHMEN. This series does deserve to stand among those great comics mentioned.
This was around the time of Secret War, US Agent Cap and the Hobgoblin. Was riveted to the Squadron Supreme story, even though the art was inconsistent. Also enjoyed Kingdom Come - these themes are timeless.
Sure people love the boys but Gimme squadron supreme any day
Facts
@@SyFyWire so could you maybe possibly make a show
I was fortunate enough to have read Squadron Supreme last summer from the library. About 4 months later I was able to get my hands on a copy for myself to enjoy reading.
Kevin Feige have plan for the Squadron Supreme in the MCU!
While I'm excited if ever it's true, I'm not sure what they can do after the success of Watchmen and The Boys.
Really?!
That’s awesome!!
What’s the plan
Loki Season 2
when I first heard about Squadron Supreme I think it was in Wizard magazines directors cut sort of thing. They also listed the final fight among their most brutal comic fights. Then Marvel started their Supreme story and I wanted to see the original that Alex Ross did a cover for. I loved it. I cast voices in my head.
I'd love to see Disney do a direct to streaming cartoon movie, like DC does with Dark Knight Returns or Red Son, or their other animated movies. I'd love to see this made into a movie and kept as close to the comic as possible.
I loved the series but I always thought a different art style would have taken it to another level
I’ve long been a fan of the squad and even the first 12 issues of squadron supreme and a little bit of all of their various series
Me too
Same
Really!??!
I remember this run when it came out in the 80's. Nuke's story arc was probably the one that impacted me the most. Interesting and tragic in all it's aspects...it was probably the most human side of the story.
Cool that you're going deep cut with this series! I love that you featured Squadron Supreme.
Hyperion: Superman
Nighthawk: Batman
Zarda: Wonder Woman
Whizzer: The Flash
Skymaster: Martian Manhunter
Amphibian: Aquaman
Golden Archer: Green Arrow
Blue Eagle: Hawkman
Lady Lark: Black Canary
Arcanna: Zatanna
Dr Spectrum: Green Lantern
Tom Thumb: Lex luthor
Nuke: Captain Atom
Nuke is firestorm and Thom thumb is the atom
Man, the end of this comic was Mind Blowing and so Sad. Such an awesome series.
Exactly they are wayyy too similar, not to take any away from injustice but it’s looking sus
I remember buying this comic back when it first came out. That was the greatest comics era to me.
My favorite limited series of all time. And yes, I have the trade paperback with Gruenwald's ashes in the ink.
IF they do this right it will go down as one of the greatest comic book themed movies ever
Hyperion is a badass dude
The buzz when this series premiered WAS that it was the best Justice League story of that year.
It dared to acribe sophisticated motives and game out logical outcomes to the basic JL team that would NEVER have been permitted by the editors of the actual title over at the "Distinguished Competition" at the time.
I’m a huge Nighthawk and Tom Thumb fan! I’m so sad that Tom Thumb died between issues…
How could you not compare it to DC's Injustice? A totalitarian Superman vs. Freedom Fighter Batman
Red Son as well, now that I think about it.
Because it was first....like 1985 before Watchmen first....injustice is a RIP-off of this
Thank you Mark Gruenwald. I love these comics.
I just got this complete series today at Ollie's for 6$. Mad stoked to finally read this.
Id love it if Marvel would make either a movie or show based on these characters it could be Awesome Man
What's awesome is that the Squadron Supreme Omnibus can be purchased pretty cheap from sites like eBay. Got my copy for 50 USD
I had this when it originally came out.loved this comic.
I own that comic book series. I have read it many times!Great story!
I really like this video!! I Haven’t heard a lot of these examples before. Thank you!!!
As a kid, I've read comics that only mention super hero deaths in captions. I only read the last issue was first time seeing it and it was epic.
Glad Squadron Supreme getting long overdue respect. Another 80s series that asked big questions and needs a 2nd look is Secret Wars II (yes really). That book was way ahead of it's time too
Always loved the squadron, thanks for this behind the scenes info
First issue I read on the series was the death of a hero whose power was growing out of control and killing his loved ones. He was killed in a fight with another hero who never really recovers and is changed irrevocably both emotionally and (eventually) physically as a result. Anyway, I was hooked. I have a significant chunk of Gruenwald's Cap run and I'm still collecting his Quasar series here and there, hoping to get the full 60-issue run of probably the most powerful and insecure hero in the Marvel Universe.
I loved the marketing that led to this series. The ads in other comics with the silhouette of the team made them look like the JLA, but it was clearly something fresh and exciting. I don't see marketing like that anymore.
I loved them in AVERAGE assembled great take on them I definitely will pick these books up
Definitely going to re-read this!
One of my favorite JLA stories. I wish Gruenwald had written for JLA.
Wonder woman’s impact is so vast it’s crazy. The original team I saw no females it was 4 dudes but after they brought up the JL the female character was added
Absolutely LOVED this series. Was going to reread it because I was thinking that since the MCU was introducing the multiverse that they could be great villains for Avengers 4.😁 I wish i would reread it before i watched the vid.
This was great definitely gave me the low down on them because I've been confused over exactly who they were and they're place in the marvel universe
On December 9th 2021, my graphic novel book club will be discussing Squadron Supreme.
One of my favorite books.
It's just a matter of time before we get Hyperion
In the end, "with great powers comes great responsibility" brings the equation power x responsibility. SS brought another, equally important equation: power x wisdom. Hyperion and the others had a sense of their responsibility towards mankind, and the power to fulfill that duty. What they lacked was the wisdom to do it right.
That's an essential reflection in all approaches towards power, in comics and in real life.
I just started reading Injustice: Gods Among Us, and I'm surprised at how closely these two stories align.
I read this in digital form around 2012...after I had read Watchmen, I gotta say, I like Squadron Supreme better...also I LOVED that they were clearly Justice League knock-offs. I wish I'd have had access to the series in 1985...I had just gotten into X-Men in 1984.
Ralph Macchio was also the star of 80’s hit Karate Kid series and Netflix’ Cobra Kai Series
Who knew he could also be a great comic creator?
Not the same Ralph Macchio
@@FrankieEatsPoop you sure bout that?
@@bdboricua3128 yes extremely sure, easy to find out too.
@@FrankieEatsPoop you’re wrong tho? Nice try
@@bdboricua3128 wow lol, I'll let you keep believing that. Done with this conversation that most people should know already.
Can’t wait to see them in Loki S2!
I'm actually ok if Zack synder direct this for mcu
I love the Squadron Supreme this series is better than watchmen
When are they going to appear in the MCU?
Mark Gruenwald had his ashes put in the reprint of the Squadron Supreme!
"Its very difficult to develop an icon" was Luke Skywalker from episode 8 a bold choice or a naive choice?
Surely I'm not the only comics fan in the world who prefers this Squadron Supreme series to Watchmen....
The Squadron Supreme will stay alive both in the comics and, my collection of there Marvel legends toys! They are cooler to play with then the Tod McFarlane toys of the just league!
Signature
Hyperion needs the MCU treatment based on the 2000’s reboot...
It's more like Kingdom Come
I tried, but couldn't get past the artwork
Why the reupload?
Makes you think.
I was stumped when it wasn't in my favorite clips selection.
Who’s here after Hero’s Reborn #1?
Was injustice basically a copy and past of that story?
With a few cosmetic changes here and there, but otherwise, yeah.
It was bigger in scale but yeah
Okay, I'll say it: I prefer Squadron Supreme to Watchmen.
10:34 just because there wasn't free slot in Disney pg-13 oriented little babies (mentally) audience targeting machina doesn't mean SНIТ
+ all these other films, CW with gore and games likes Injustice have SS DNA in them , so SS wins.
This is the original gritty superhero team, not the JL
Tt
Hhhhhhhhhhhh
The plagiarism is unreal.
Marvels version is better anyway
@@shreyvaghela3963 it really isn’t. Are you stupid? The justice league is literally one of the most iconic superhero teams in history. And the justice league are a very well developed team. Each member does something. Superman and Wonder Woman are the heavyweights, batman and cyborg are the tech and tactician people,Flash is the speed guy, Aquaman and green lantern are what they use for resources, Martian manhunter is versatile.
@@sladewilson377 I think he mean watchmen not justice league
@@mad8324 Watchmen have nothing to do with this.
@@sladewilson377 the video is about watchmen and squadron supreme tho. In a natural process of elimination, my mind will come to terms during the thinking process and start making some deduction and taking the fact that this video specifically talking about squadron supreme and how it's come first than watchmen( at least that is how my brain think)so in a natural conclusion I think he's talking about watchmen. Minus the fact if anyone deleted they previous comment.
supreme power by Straczynski, was much better
That series ends on the weirdest cliffhanger as if it was literally one issue away from being finished in the follow up Max series Squadron Supreme by Straczynski and Gary Frank.
Kingdom Come is highly overrated. Except for art.
Its a copy of justice league
Its a sign of writer and editors lack of creativity
The entire point of the Squadron Supreme was that they were a pastiche of the Justice League, that does not mean that they are copies of that the people making them lacked any creativity.
I find more of a connection to injustice than civil war
