Let's not forget his other original story, Suckerpunch. I was wondering if he learned more about storytelling since that little project.
To be completely fair, it was great to watch as a visual piece, but from a story standpoint Suckerpunch was hollow and disjointed.
Snyder movies only have interesting plots and character development when he's only allowed to lightly chop at someone else's story. 300? Watchmen? turned out fine cuz it's basically the comic story. His DC stuff? ohhhh boy. I know there are Snyderverse fans, but I ain't one of them.

The way that scene should have gone is that the protagonists should have gone on a side quest together to capture a rare and valuable creature that the slave owner wanted. In return he would release the dude from his debt. It would give the protagnists time to bond, the dude to show his skills by taming the wild creature and the farmers a chance to prove to him that they're worth helping. The pilot would refuse and just hang back at the compound while they're off risking their lives, hinting at his questionable loyality by showing it rather than telling us.
Also, the slave owner would live, because fundamentally he's a business man and he honors business agreements. Skeevy and greedy, yes, but not cartoonishly evil.

For example, when Kora is leaving to get help, it could show her asking the soldier to watch the village while she’s gone. Or maybe just a quick scene that shows him leaving the village after the attack. But nope. Nothing. He just vanished with no explanation.

Kinda felt like they pulled a lot of stuff out of 40k. The look of the imperial officers, those medics at the end resemble technomancers or tech priests, the wording of things like the academy militarum. I dont think it's the worst thing I've seen, definitely far from the best (still better than the sequels iykyk). The film pulled a lot of inspiration out of lots of other media seemingly, not just star wars. But I think the biggest thing I hate is that the movie was advertised essentially to be star wars but with sex, gore and cursing. This all felt very PG13 to me when I think it could've benefited from being the rated R experience they were selling to people. Apparently the rated R cut will be coming later but I think it's hilarious that zack deliberately chose to make this version the first impression rather than the rated R cut. It's a bad look and the real reason this film should be criticized. They specifically watered down this version so people would be drawn to the rated R cut in the future. It's like selling a DLC of a movie. Absolutely hilarious.

It was initially a passion project inspired by a plane conversation thirty years ago between Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad wondering what would happen if Seven Samurai and Star Wars were combined. The idea was initially pitched to Lucasfilm as an R rated Star Wars spinoff, but rejected. After years of on and off development, (ultimately spurred on by Lockdown) he ended up pitching it to Netflix to try and be a competitor, with an R rated cut and spin offs in the pipeline.

After watching the movie, my friend Adam told me “Zack Snyder is great at aesthetics and visual worldbuilding, but terrible at story/plot.” And that perfectly encompassed my reaction to Rebel Moon.
I’m so glad the spider lady scene got mentioned. That scene was rad. It felt like it was taken from the middle of a better story. The lightsaber wielder had this real sense of honor to her that we just never got to see. She could’ve been an awesome character in a story about her.
Additionally, in the beginning there’s this robot soldier, and we hear about how the robot soldiers used to belong to the king and ever since the king died they won’t pick up a weapon. Later, a woman who was nice to the robot is getting assaulted, and something shifts in the robot and he’s able to pick up a gun and shoot the guy grabbing her. That could’ve been another awesome character in a story that was actually about them.

I think it's possible he could direct stuff like that and be very successful again. The problem is he keeps trying to touch a pen and getting involved with the scripts. There seems to be a very clear pattern of the more involved he is with the story/script, the worse the movie ends up being.
On a completely different note, I'm blown away by how delusional and insane his fans are. I'm shocked at how hard they are defending this film and some of the wild shit they're using as a defense. Someone legit told me... "I'm not sure why you're hating it so much, his daughter died, give him a break." They cite movies from over a decade ago as proof that he's still a good director. They say the Snyder cut "saved Justice League", which is crazy because all that cut did was turn a bad movie into a mid one, while costing the studio another 70 million to make. -Fascist human empire that is literally called "The Imperium"
-Human sect obsessed with technology and augmenting themselves with it literally called "The Mechanicum"
-Human leaders name is literally Belisarus (Belisarus Cawl being the leader of The Mechanichum in 40k)
-The Ecclesiarchy within this human empire is and the way they act, literally the same feeling as the Inquisition from 40k. Rebel Moon even has these weird priest dudes (who literally seem to do nothing the entire movie) in all red who further reinforce that vibe.
And that's just what I remember. To be honest I watched it right as it came out and barely remember much outside the basic premise of the story and the similarities I noticed. The movie was pretty unmemorable so I'm honestly even struggling to remember all the characters names. There could be a lot of other blatant similarities I totally missed.
