  • Welcome to the famous Natural History Museum in London. I was blown away with what's inside!
The museum is home to life and earth science specimens comprising some 80 million items within five main collections: botany, entomology, mineralogy, paleontology and zoology. The museum is a centre of research specialising in taxonomy, identification and conservation. Given the age of the institution, many of the collections have great historical as well as scientific value, such as specimens collected by Charles Darwin. The museum is particularly famous for its exhibition of dinosaur skeletons and ornate architecture-sometimes dubbed a cathedral of nature-both exemplified by the large Diplodocus cast that dominated the vaulted central hall before it was replaced in 2017 with the skeleton of a blue whale hanging from the ceiling. The Natural History Museum Library contains extensive books, journals, manuscripts, and artwork collections linked to the work and research of the scientific departments; access to the library is by appointment only. The museum is recognised as the pre-eminent centre of natural history and research of related fields in the world.

I remember seeing this giant slice of a Californian tree as a child. It's was over a thousand years old when chopped down. I'm sure it looked more varnished, brighter, and used to have a large piece of glass at the base as it was lower down. Also I'm sure it had dates and events over hundreds of years written on the tree. Looks like a long poster has now been placed there. They have possibly cleaned it as it now looks a slightly different colour. Apparently Its been in the Museum since early 1890s. Great video Tim. The layout of the Museum has changed a lot over the years. They used to have a ciniprojector in one of the rooms, with wooden seats, showing old Black and White films. I'll always remember seeing " Giraffe Women" for the first time in Africa with loads of rings around there extended necks. Thanks for bringing back forgotten memories.

Funny story. As a kid (and still as an adult) I was obsessed with history. So I was thrilled when my parents brought me to London to visit the museums. Except I’d misheard. I thought we were going to the National History Museum. I was expecting tales and artefacts from the Tudor period, the Romans, the Vikings, The Georgians etc. I still feel the disappointment I felt when we arrived to a load of old dinosaur bones as I realised that Mum had actually said Natural History Museum 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
I really should go back to walk round it and appreciate it properly and not while throwing a tantrum because Henry VIII wasn’t mentioned but I’ve been too stubborn to do so lol 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

Luckily a man a few steps behind her manage to catch her but since then she's been scared of it.. I on the other hand like it and don't worry about the height as after you come out of earth you can see more of the star consultations which I love. I didn't realized we were alike when it came to favourites being dinosaurs earthquakes and volcanoes. The one I love is the Darwin legacy. My sister' her favourite is the creepy crawlys in sects.
