Hello Emp [Reacts] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This studio recording (from their 2007 album, as you mentioned in the description) is the only version you will find, as this song has never been performed live. This is their most resentful song, and it's an attack on the manager and husband of the band's first singer, Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya]. In 2005, Tarja was fired by the band after the last concert of the tour, in a public way, with an open letter. The band members blame her husband/manager for her change of attitude, which led to this breakup. The vocal part of this song was performed by Marco Hietala, bassist and singer of the band.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and very recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile).
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "

WOW. Thank you for this! It isn't easy diving into a band with so much music in their catalogue and it wouldn't be fair for me to judge a band based one specific song from a specific era. I will for sure be checking out more! This was VERY informative and I appreciate it immensely! Also, thank you for the extremely warm welcome. :)

Now, THIS is an interesting start to a Nightwish journey. Their heaviest and most angry song ("Slaying the dreamer" comes close, though). Also one of the very few with no female vocals.
You have chosen quite the day to post this video. Today is exactly ten years since Floor Jansen joined the band. You will definitely realize the significance of this event if you decide to continue your journey.

Hello again and thank you for taking a look at Nightwish, like I asked you to do. You picked quite the song to start with, as this is not your typical Nightwish song (but then again, what is?). Nigthwish is actually a female fronted band, but in this song you heard Marko, their (former) bass player, who really has a great voice and often gets to show it off. This song is one of their heaviest and the lyrics are aimed at their first singer's husband and manager, who wasn't very popular with them as you might have guessed. As I said in my recommendation, Nightwish is best appreciated LIVE. If you want to hear their current singer, Floor Jansen, showcasing both her clean and harsh vocals, then give the song ‘Yours Is An Empty Hope’ a try. czcams.com/video/vyLsU7Q333k/video.html
For more information on Nightwish and a list with other song suggestions, I'll refer you to Gabriel Bardac (he'll leave a comment soon). I'm looking forward to your next reaction. Greetings from the Netherlands.

This actually isn't their lead singer in this song. At the time that was Anette Olzon (Swedish) and now it's Floor Jansen (Dutch). Unusual first Nightwish choice as this song is an outlier in their discography. It's definitely their angriest (a long story why) and probably their heaviest. Gabriel will be presenting a list if you want to continue with Nightwish.
    BTW, live Nightwish is best.

Hahaha what a fricking funny way to get acquainted with Nightwish. Whoever sugguested this to you must be laughing his *ss off at your confusion. They are a symphonic metal band and this is without a doubt their most heavy and angriest track ever made.
This song is pure rage made into a wonderful piece of music.
That said, you heard Marko spitting out the lyrics, their front singer is normally the lovely Floor Jansen.
You need to listen to some more normal songs by them and most people start at the other end of the spectrum: Ghost Love Score from Wacken Open Air 2013, since you liked the instrumentation on MPG you will be pleasantly surprised.

    @chriso6719 Před rokem +5

Welcome to the world of symphonic metal and Nightwish.
This song is arguably their heaviest, and one of the few that former bassist Marko Hietala sang lead on. Most have Tarja Turunen ,Anette Olzon , or Floor Jansen on lead, depending on when they were recorded or performed. Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards) writes 90-95% of the songs. Gabriel and Martine explained the meaning of the song, so how angry was Tuomas? It is the only song (excluding Demos) that includes profanity.
As you will see, every song is different. The studio stuff is great, but they EXCEL at live. A common first song for reactors is Ghost Love Score from the Wacken (Vah-ken) 2013 show.
Whatever song you choose to do next, please see Gabriel Bardac's comment for a great link.

I just watched another video where you said this was your first NW song! OMG!! There is a huge backstory on this song, & they don’t usually do angry songs, but they were angry, with reason. Marko is a great singer, he is yelling at Mr. Master Passion Greed, the husband of their first singer. There is a place for this but you need the whole story..... but later, LOL!

I'd probably go with Elan, Noise, or Storytime (other than GLS of course) as a first listen. But anyway, so glad you continued on after this and are getting started with many different Nightwish styles. You are fun to watch.

Marko as a solo singer with Nightwish is the exception. From memory the few songs:
While Your Lips Are Still Red (Live at Wembley, 2015)
NIGHTWISH - THE ISLANDER (LIVE AT TAMPERE)
NIGHTWISH - Endlessness (Official Lyric Video)
Before that he was in the band Tarot, where he was also the main singer. There is also a solo album, in a Finnish and an English version:

Marko is not their main singer. They usually have a female frontend. The best one being Floor, because she combines the virtues of the two prior singers.
In variety of styles in one song, yes, but otherwise it is also not a typical nightwish song.... Though... There is not such a thing as a 'typical' nightwish song either.

Unusual place to start a Nightwish journey, but there is no bad place to do so. It is probably their heaviest, angriest song. It is sung by the male vocalist, the bass player, Marko. He is not the primary lead singer. Most songs are sung by one of the three different female lead singers they have had. They never once did this song live. Maybe next try Romanticide, live from Wacken in 2013.

  • @CCEDE73

I mean this is Nightwish but at the same time this isn't Nightwish😅. It is their song and they are known to change styles between songs. They don’t have that many as heavy songs as this. This is one of their heaviest song. They are more known from their symphonic qualities and their female singers.
Also the singer in this, Marco, is very good singer. Actually one of the best male vocalists that there is. He also has a very versatile voice. Now you have only heard one part of it.
Thanks for the reaction and welcome to the rabbit hole😁

Wow. You must be the first reactor to start with this track. It has so many depths of meaning. So much anger on one track. Now try something much more melodic. Best follow Gabriel's suggestions as this is actually a female fronted band 95% of the time.

  • @zacharyengle4256

Some better Nightwish songs to start with would be "Élan", "Harvest", "Turn Loose The Mermaids", "The Islander", "The Greatest Show on Earth", "The Crow, The Owl, and the Dove", "Nemo", "Endless Forms Most Beautiful", "Eva", and "The Poet and the Pendulum", just to name many of my favorite Nightwish songs.
Whoever recommended "Master Passion Greed" as your first Nightwish song to listen to did you dirty, tbh. It'd be like telling somebody just getting into extreme metal to listen to Ice Nine Kills' "Take Your Pick", Cannibal Corpse, Lorna Shore, or something like that instead of recommending Bullet For My Valentine, Motionless in White, etc.

Thank goodness you gave NW another try, because having this song (which is great) as your only exposure to Nightwish, certainly would give you the wrong impression of their vocal abilities.
