We are literally known for the incredible way we always manage to bottle qualifying for the Euros or World Cup as well as our horrifically unfortunate luck at times. The list of bottlejobs is endless.
A few things you missed which I think are important to put into context how often this happens:
We needed a point against the Czechs and manager at the time Craig levein decided to play a 4-6-0 formation which is just beyond embarrassing to still go on to lose the match.
In 2008 we managed to beat a prime France squad both home and away with James Mcfaddens insane goal which is regarded as scotlands greatest ever goal and still managed to not qualify.
In the 2010 World Cup qualifiers we actually managed to go out on goal difference to Norway thanks to us losing against Macedonia in our opening game.
In 2016 euro qualifying we managed to lose to Georgia yet again meaning we finished below Ireland for a play off spot.
In 2018 we yet again manage to finish 3rd in our group and yet again this is thanks to goal difference. Drawing with Lithuania didn’t help.
We have finished 3rd in our respected group more times than any other country in international qualifying history….

Going 2-0 down to the Faroe Islands inside 13 minutes, and the scorer of both goals is a primary school teacher. We were incredible lucky to escape the ultimate humiliation that night, drawing 2-2. Even so, our dignity took a severe hit. We lost 1-0 to Lithuania in the same campaign, but somehow made the play offs, beating Holland 1-0 at home but losing 6-0 away.
2006 World Cup qualifiers, home defeats to Belarus and Norway ended our chances, even though we drew 1-1 with eventual champions Italy, beat Norway away 2-1 and beat the Slovenians away 3-0

As someone who wasn't even born when Scotland last qualified for a major tournament (before Euro 2021) these last 3 years have been insane with regards to my experience of supporting the national team as this really is our 'golden generation' but not in the way that we have the best of the best in world football. Our highest profile player is a LB and captain of the side, our GK plays for Norwich, our defense is made up of lower end premier league or even championship level players, our midfield though probably our strongest area still doesn't boast the worlds best and the our strike force is an Aussie who plays for QPR and a relegated Southampton striker who scored 5 premier league goals last season. But its a team, a real team something i think we've absolutely lacked in the past of having great players never the right players or a manager who can knit it all together. Steve Clarke, though not my first choice when he got the job, has made us and the players believe in ourselves again in football and for that only good times can come from it.

I think a big reason the National team isnt as strong or supported here as it could be (even though we still have great numbers) is there are certain people within both of our biggest clubs who dislike the team for different reasons. Certain Rangers fans (not all) view the team as being too Scottish nationalist and dont want to support something that represents independence. On the other hand being brought up a Celtic fan, my Father never really cared about the national team or watched the games with me, to him he had seen the national team in his eyes, disregard too many Celtic players for so called sectarian reasons, and a lot of Celtic fans in the older generations have supported Ireland more. Now this is falling out of fashion and both Club's fans are big into the national team, but its an interesting thing to consider.

I’m old enough to remember exactly where I was when Scotland opened the World Cup against Brazil in 1998. At the time, it didn’t seem a stretch to say ‘we’ll be back again in 2002’. Then we went into decline. There became this expectation that we’d drop silly points somewhere, usually against a team from the former Soviet Union or Yugoslavia. We were sometimes able to pull off an upset against a superior team (Holland at home 2003, France home and away in 06/07, Croatia home and away in 2013), but that was the best we could do. We regularly finished 3rd, maybe a point or two off the play off spots, which made those silly lost points all the more galling. It’s quite incredible to see us qualify for back to back Euro Championships. Knowing the kind of man Steve Clarke is, he won’t want us to settle for this. He’ll want us winning those final two qualifiers so we’re in the best position to avoid a group of death for the finals. Plus, a win against Georgia in Tbilisi would help banish some old ghosts

Really appreciate videos like this that take notice of how our National team’s doing. As someone that was born after 98, I grew up watching Scotland fail to deliver and start players that couldn’t care less about their country.
It was the same in other sports like rugby, which meant that my entire generation grew up with a loser mentality. As soon as Steve Clarke took the job, the atmosphere instantly began changing. It almost brought a tear to my eye to see so many Scottish jerseys walking around the streets during Euro 2020, as many thought they’d never see the day of us being at another tournament!
Looking forward to Euro 2024. Even if we get knocked out of the groups again, this Scottish side has brought joy to an entire generation of Scots that knew nothing but humiliation.

England fans in general are more likely to identify their nationality as British rather than English, so generally there is a sense of support for Scotland, Wales and N Ireland from England fans. As an England fan I would happily support one of the other UK teams if England got knocked out, if a team like Scotland went on to win the euros I wouldn’t exactly be partying in the streets for them, but I would be happy for them and would certainly rather see them win it than a country like Slovenia which I have zero connection to. The rivalry from England fans to their UK neighbours has always been more playful and banter based rather than actual hatred. Scotland, Wales and Irish fans do have plenty of fans that genuinely have a serious hatred towards England, but it doesn’t really exist the other way around.

I’ve lived in England all my life and never seen anyone be genuinely hateful towards any of the other nationalities in the UK or Ireland. @ekzxty Před 7 měsíci +1

@@reecetomm there’s more people in England that have genuine hate for their neighbours more than there is in Scotland, Wales or Ireland.
Most Scottish people do not genuinely hate England or English people, in fact they’re likely related with lots of English people. The truth is the people seeking independence do not seek it because they hate England- more so because they’re either deceived by the SNP’s lies or they believe Scotland should be independent from Westminster’s control.
Wales are generally indifferent when it comes to England and just like the Scot’s are likely related to lots of English people.
Ireland don’t really hate England except the old men stuck on the past.

Looks like Spain will win the group because of the goal difference but all the countries who finish 1st will be hoping they do not get us at the finals especially as all the games will be a home game for us given Tartan Army will snap up any ticket going.

Let's be honest , how many times have Scotland been "robbed" Up until the Italy game where the Scotland player was basically booted off the park and 50000 people saw a free kick for us and ONE man saw it for Italy , just a pity he was the referee ! I had never given credence to conspiracies .THAT night I changed my mind . We had already beaten France home and a way all we needed was a draw which we had . But think about it ....FIFA /UEFA were never going to allow a competition where the WORLD CHAMPIONS were knocked out in qualifying ! I was there that night in the pishing rain I know what I saw ! Both governing bodies are corrupt as fcuk !

  • @iskye07

Clarke's appointment was a bit of a perfect storm. For the first time since probably McLeish's first stint in charge we have a manager that was in touch with the game as it stands, as opposed to being a bit of a has been (McLeish mkII, Burley, and, to some extent, Strachan), combined with some of the best Scottish talent emerging since probably the late 80's/early 90's. BUT the away defeat to Spain, along with the hefty friendly losses to England and France are a reality check to where we're at. Hopefully we can establish ourselves as a top 20 side globally, and on the fringes of the top 10 within UEFA. We ought to be capable of reaching the last 16 in Germany next year, and maybe the QFs with a favourable draw.

I have been surprised at the expressed indifference Sottish football supporters have for international football... They often seem to resent internationals as a disruption of their clubs pursuit of the SPL.. It's like how English football once was like.. Back in the early history of the World cup The English did not take it seriously.. When England had probably the best national team and could have won a few world cups they did not but in any serious effort.. Of course later the English did end up wanting World cup success but by that time other nations had developed good professional players and teams like Brazil Argentina and Germany took turns at holding up the World cup...
