  • Hey Dressage Superstar, I am going to answer the question - what do you do with your hands in walk, and how do you keep them still and by your side in the proper position?
To watch part 2 of Hands Series, please go to: • WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR H...
But before we do checkout, want an awesome FREE training class... www.dressagemastery.com/train...
That is the link to a class that I am currently running on "How To Dramatically Transform Your Riding to Have The Confidence, Look, And Feel of a Grand Prix Rider in as Little as 3 Times Per Week, Regardless of Your Current Riding Level".
The horse's head moves, therefore the hands must move. But how the hands should move is because, as you said, you're going with the horse, you're feeling the horse, and your hands will, of their own accord, move how they have to because the horse's head is moving.

The pop-up boxes with dialog really helps cement the major points.

I find in all gaits that a reasonable place to start is to put them forward enough that you have a slight bend in your elbow, far apart enough to be roughly level with your hipbones (probably wider apart than you think), and level horizontally with your hipbones (probably lower than you think). As the horse moves its head forward or down, allow your elbows to move back and forth with them so you keep a gentle, constantly adjusting contact. You want to always be just feeling the corners of the horse's mouth if you're not giving an aid. Just enough contact to let them know you're still with them. Just to say "I'm here, we're communicating, and you're correct that I'm not asking you for anything with my hands right now." Like keeping a door or window open so you can talk to someone if you need to. If you throw your reins away (keep them too far forward) or block with them (keeping them tense, too close to you, too inflexible) you're shutting that door or window so you can't talk to them through your hands anymore.
      Hope that helps.

Awesome video,as usual! My problem is that I can't keep my hands steady at the canter. They just keep moving back and forth. Greetings from Greece!!

For my little kids, who aren't supposed to have or know about champagne, I use the metaphor of coffee cups or hot cocoa. If you hold the reins and a coffee mug the wrong way, you're going to be spilling hot cocoa all over the horse. The horse won't like that. Keep your hands "up"! Same concept! :-)
