- So, she has a very interesting 'speaking voice', which totally differs from her 'singing voice'... This is a strange concept, which warrants discussion.
Regardless of the way she chooses to speak, this woman can SING! I thought it was powerful and very well done indeed. What do YOU think? Let me know!

I can see her on Broadway. Such potential for character development and break out.
Michel'el was the first artist I knew of to have the 2 different voices. one very high child like speaking voice and a powerful lower signing voice. She was/is an R & B artist from the late 80s early 90s. She came about during the NWA Era.
This young lady is going places with that beautiful strong voice.
As soon as she opened her mouth, I said we have another Michel'le.
Your speaking and singing voice are controlled by different parts of the brain. That's why people who have a stutter when they speak can sing a whole song and never trip over a word. This is not a character voice, just a beautiful talent.
exactly & amen!!
Exactly, Also that allows someone to be phenomenal voice actor. Vocal control is so important.
No it's not, her voice is forced, unnatural and "fake" for lack of a better word. She needs to learn to speak with her real voice. Years ago, as We McDonnald I heard her begin to speak with her "real voice", she stopped--corrected herself and reverted to the cutsey baby doll voice. It works-but only so far, now she must become an adult--act like one and speak like one. She is terrified.
@@jimquantic link?
@@jimquanticYou better listen to Michell’le who was a singer in the 1990’s, and dated Dr. Dre. Y’all youngins will say anything. Goof ball
This is not her First TV Talent Show, she was on The Voice Season 11, before American Idol 2023
I’ve known We’ since she’s a child and she is authentically very sweet and humble and yes, this is her real voice!!
EXACTLY, Gina! right?? because what the *he11* is he going on about?? claiming Wé is putting on, "applying" what is her NATURAL voice?? comparing it to when he definitely is "applying," putting on HIS ACTUAL FAKE voices examples. what a weird thing he's believing/thinking and so very publicly doing so *out loud.* 🤦🏾♀
and he starts out by saying her thinks she's authentic, "real?" dude is all kinds & manner of confused! truly & seriously, just smdh.😐🧚🏾♀
Well she is most definitely a talented person and appears to have a beautiful heart.
When i heard her..i said she will win idol....but then i said they looking 4 a pop voice...america is...i love het voice.....i always say where are the female singers with that low register.....there she is.
Is she married? Because I would be blessed if she could be my future Wife 🙏🏽
No it isn't. I mean, it IS real--as she PERMORMS it. I HEARD her once, as she began to speak--speaking normally, then she "caught herself" and "switched back" to the cutsy whootsy FAKE voice. It is an act, but no, not calling her a fraud. She IS that voice, when she is ACTING that part. She is hiding--for some reason. I have no idea why, just wish she would drop the act now, and give us the authentic (not sure the name--this is the second name so far I have heard, used to be We McDonald, not is is something else--fake names too.
She talks over her larynx and she sings from her diaphragm. A singer in the 1990's had the same condition. Her name is Michel'le. Listen to one of her videos.
Exactly
Michel'le and Cyndi
Yes sir, thank you for your intelligent discussion. I'm tired of hearing comments that she's putting on a fake voice for attention. And as for this guy saying she is a good singer, she is an amazing singer.
Thank you for your intelligent explanation of her voice.
Wow I remember her. You’re spot on with the facts. Thanks.
I've known people with debilitating stutters, who can't complete a sentence, switch into singing full blown opera powerfully and perfectly. There's a lot we don't know. I do know this: We Ani makes me feel - feel a lot - when listening to her sing, and this is ultimately all that matters.
That’s how singer Michell’e speaking voice is and sings very incredible also
This young woman shows us how absolutely marvelous the human experience can be.
The phenomenon of her speaking vs singing voice is what I call the Gomer Pyle/Jim Neighbors syndrome. As you said she trained her singing voice and taught herself how to produce full and rich notes while singing. Many people speak far differently than they sing. I have known artists that their speaking voice is down right annoying but their singing voice is angelic.
Wé Ani’s voice is a true force of nature. I can’t wait to hear again😊
amen
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
I remember We’ from the Voice when she was 17. She definitely is unique and authentic. She went very far on the Voice, but song choice is always key in connecting to the audience and ultimately winning. As far as the science; I get what he is saying regarding the control and if she can get her voice to sound like that singing vs. talking, but let’s not forget the hemispheres of the brain. Left and right brain. If you go into depth study on this you know speaking and singing are on two different sides of the brain. It’s a proven fact. I’m a RN, so I know a little about what I’m saying. I have patients who have had strokes that affected their speech where you can’t understand them ( Aphasia), but ask them to sing and it’s clear as a bell. This is why you know which side of the brain had the infarct from the symptoms produced. Also, folk who stutter, but sing fluidly. We’s speech is some type of impediment ( probably undiagnosed), but clearly evident that when she sings she is using the right side of her brain and the left side is speech. Remember Jim Nabors or Cyndi Laupers speaking and sing voice ( not as extreme as We’), Or how about those that stutter so bad they have trouble with fluid speech but sing without problems ( Mel Tillis, Carly Simon, B.B. King, Bill Withers, Mel Tillis, and Nancy Wilson to name a few. Even Ed Sheeran stuttered as a child but overcame it by rapping to Eminem).
Thanks for the valuable insights - really appreciated!
@@JohanBesterYourVocalCoach Michel'le is another singer with a high pitched voice like Wé's, but has a deeper rich voice while singing
Kodi Lee would be another example!
Yes cyndi Lauper Is a good example
Michel'el...Hello?
She is phenomenal! I’m hoping she wins! She is very talented and humble ❤😊
I've seen her on The Voice and she was extraordinary then. She's amazing. I don't know why we haven't seen her in the world yet.
I watched her on the Voice, which started me watching the show.
Amazing singer
As a speech pathologist, I would like to say yes, this is her real voice because it is the one she uses. However, it is not her optimal voice for her pitch range nor resonance. It is her habitual voice. She has what is called a functional voice disorder, which means it is the voice she is using based on habit. At this point, she cannot "choose" to change her speaking voice without therapeutic assistance. But, since she demonstrates better pitch control and resonance in singing, she indicates physical ability as well as stimulability. She would be an excellent candidate for voice therapy.
As a … who cares… so tired of people thinking they have validation because they start out with as a…… for example… as a special education teacher, speech pathology is a useless service in school…
She is sooo amazing! I love both of her voices!
I really hope her journey with American Idol goes further than her time on the voice in 2016. Her voice needs to be heard. But if you type her name in, you can see that her professionalism has been honed by years of training and her stage presence from lots of time performing. She is really good and should have been famous before needing a platform like American Idol.
With her level of talent, I, too, don't understand why her career and experience hasn't made her famous. She needs a recording contract and really good venues, so many can enjoy the experience of listening to her more often.
Her audition gave me chills and tears all at the same time....What a surprise when she opened her mouth to sing...I am excited to hear her sing again...Thanks for sharing your thoughts....I am trying to process the different voices part...Could it be because she is relaxed and not focusing on her voice when speaking so that is the range it settles at naturally and to make it sound different she would have to be constantly focusing when she speaks?
I agree 100%
This young lady has a incredibly powerful voice. Love your analysis, hope she wins.
I know a few well known singers , who when they spoke had higher voices when speaking and when they sang it was a different thing altogether.. a talking voice is usually what we are born with and a singing voice is trained and learned usually. Iv known low speaking voices that can sing very high, and vice versa .. I knew a singer when I spoke to her on the phone I would believe that when she sang how different it was..
Also sometimes people who stutter can sing perfectly
A STAR WAS AND IS BORN!!!!!
💫🌟✨💫
Her performance celebrating Tony Bennett got a standing O. She was beyond extraordinary!
I can see her doing songs for Disney. SHE has that "catchy and unique" voice that just captures your attention. Holy cow, she would be great and do Disney a wonderful service with her singing voice!!! What a wonderful young lady. ❤️
Have you seen her tiktok page? She sang Part of your World. It's soooooo good! She's amazing!
@@Cam-qk6kj I dont have tiktok but was able to see it! Omg she sounds amazing singing that song!!!. 😍
A STAR IN THE MAKING, ABSOLUTELY UNIQUE AND FANTASTIC.
I love Wé!!!! ❤️ I hope she goes all the way, she more than deserves it!
This audition has been one of my favorites so far. I'd really like to see her capture the hearts and imaginations of the Idol audience and go far in the competition. As a speech-language pathologist, I totally agree with your vocal analysis/commentary as well.
Thanks so much for your comment - I appreciate the feedback 😊
How is it that some one this crazy good isn't better known in the music industry. Something isn't quite right and it isn't her. We's words are sung with perfect diction and looses nothing of the nuances of musical melodic expression. Amazing
Agreed! Thanks for watching 🙋🏻♂️
the funny thing is... We Ani was ALSO on the Voice, as We McDonald. I loved her then, and I love her now!
This is something that i "watched" as to explained her real voice as too her singing voice. It explained that when she speaks it was on one hemisphere of her brain. Now, when she sings or anyone sings for that matter, it changes to the other "hemishphere". So when she speaks or sings, it is about two parts of her brain that separates the two as too speaking and or singing! Meaning... Our brains do not consider the 2 as one! 2 hemispheres that do not see it as the other.
HMM is right LOL that audition makes this man tear up! Pure Raw God given talent
I have also seen her performances on the Voice USA, including some background with guest coaches, how they are shocked. Including one where she is asked to sing my name is We and speak my name is We …
She's incredible! Def one of the ones to root for this season
great analysis thanks for sharing mate
Yes, I like it but I cannot forget this song that also Emma Kok ( 15 years old ) song at home with only a microphone. Just like Voila it struck me deep in my heart.
Please compare these songs and why is Emma's song for me so more believable and emotional although both songs are good and real, thank you and hope you react❤❤
She is magnificent! My, my she has some octaves! Love it! You go GIRL!
She is amazing and you also have a magnificent voice ❤❤❤love from Sydney Australia 🦘🦘🦘
She introduced me to this tune, and listens to it practically every day other since. Just love this tune. Very good analysis.🥷🏽🥷🏽🥷🏽🥷🏽🥷🏽🥷🏽
So this is what I feel about the difference in her voice. Totally non professional opinion here but i feel like the way she is speaking is probably how she grew up speaking but when she started singing, it could probably be due to imitation of as signer she liked that she realized she could totally change her voice to sound like that. And I feel she continues to speak the way she does because applying her voice differently would sort of feel fake to her. I mean we could all speak with a sort of different voice we put on but it would be sort of like acting or faking.
My niece has a voice similar to hers, and it is so cute. Her brothers also had the same voice until they were about 7 yrs old. I would calm the house and start talking, thinking it was her. I believe it.
I agree that she had all the boxes checked. She seems to be a wonderful person. Her talent surpassed alot of competition. I really like her.
Would LOVE to hear her do some Tracy Chapman covers!!!! Esp if she makes it her own and adds some flare without ruining the overall song.
Well Michelle' voice is the same way and as I went around the world I've seen plenty of women and men who have a voice like that but, my first time I heard someone speak like that was a guy back in the 80's when I was a senior so since there's no medical science about it? We cannot say she chooses to talk like that but I've been following her for a long time when she was 16 and she still has that same voice ❤
She was also known as Wé McDonald on the 2016 American edition of The Voice.
Your professional vocal analysis can't be disputed but the inference that We is somehow manipulating her speaking voice intentionally is irresponsible on your part. I have been watching We since The Voice and she is genuine. Whether it comes from her being bullied or it's simply her is not for anyone to judge. As an 18 year old and singing at The Lincoln Center in honor of Tony Bennett, We has been consistently outstanding. American Idol is a bit of a popularity contest so who knows how far she will go. Pia Toscano was eliminated very early and she has a magnificent voice. If We gets the right material she will be a star. I wish her all the best in life.
The coach never said Wei was deliberately manipulating her speaking voice, but intimated when he said though he had never spoken to her, that there is possibly a psychological element to her speaking in a "little girl voice."
Years ago on a radio talk show with psychologist, Dr. Joy Brown, the first thing she would do is ask the age of the caller. One evening a woman who was in her early thirties and with a speaking voice like Wei's, called the show, and the first thing Dr. Joy said was I want you to try and lower your voice, you are a grown woman, not a little girl anymore. After a couple of minutes of getting the caller to copy her, the woman indeed had lowered her voice for a good few minutes. Dr. Joy then wanted to discuss what she was possibly hanging onto from her childhood.
The coach believes that with her tremendous range and voice control, that Wei could, if she wanted, lower her speaking voice.
So the coach may be correct that Wei, for a reason perhaps she is not consciously aware of (perhaps for safety?), is also hanging onto her little girl speaking voice.
I think she's amazing, she's a star!
She is amazing.
She's incredible
To me she’s one of the best voices of the moment. If not the best female popular music singer right now…
I’m a singer and voice teacher.
She’s amazing…I don’t know why she’s still on the Reality show thing…
I don’t see the need…
About the spoken voice, yes conscious or unconscious I think it’s a choice, it’s not two voices definitely.
I know people who do this all the time: speak like little children on a regular basis but can’t sing this clear and full, but somehow she Can and willingly decides to sing with her full voice versus what she does when she speaks.
Love her
Broadway star in the making
Spot on.
Doesn't Fantasia (Idol winner years ago) have a voice difference like this? I don't know if she sings as low as We does, but her speaking voice is similar (if I remember correctly).
Similar, yes, but not so extreme. Thanks for your comment!
FANTASIA WAS STILL A TEENAGER WHEN SHE COMPETED AND WON IDOL. HER SPEAKING VOICE HAS MAS MATURED AND DARKENED OVER TIME. IN ADDITION IT WASN'T THIS ANIMATED OR CHILD LIKE.
And Fantasia's speaking voice sounds very similar to her singing voice.
@1922Rhoyalty IT DOESN'T. FANTASIA WAS 19 WHEN SHE WAS ON IDOL...STILL GOING THROUGH PUBERTY. THIS IS A GROWN WOMAN IN HER LATE 20'S. FANTASIA HAD A RASP AND LIGHTNESS TO HER IMMATURE SPEAKING VOICE. THIS ADULT JUST SOUNDS LIKE A GIMMICK. AND LIKE PREVIOUSLY SAID, THERE WAS NO WAY SHE COULD WIN.
Yeah, you guys are right. I just re-listened to Fantasia and the difference isn't nearly as pronounced as in Wei's voice.
She sung the song better than the original, I really felt very emotion and every word of the song better than Demi sung the original
Great voice...
Michele is an amazing singer like this and speaks just like this girl all her life. also my husband sounds totally different from his singing voice. Everyone is shocked how clear he sings compared to how he sounds. He doesn’t know how to switch it up like u are saying. He has missed out on job interviews bc of it. Now my 3 year old is the same way. He sounds much clearer when he sings songs . I definitely think there is more to this than simply a mental as it appears u are trying to say.
Does that same application go to people that stutter when they're talking, but do not do so when they are singing?
I believe you are right!
I have actually the same condition. My speaking voice is so child like. And I cannot control it. When I sing, I sing deep and I can sing high notes
We' Ani is a true superstar. Looking forward to hearing what she has in store going into the lives on American Idol. She is going to be HUGE.
You can pretty much tell she's going to be top 3. Depends on where AI producers want her to place. They will give her the song choices and stage production to make her get the votes they want her to have. But clearly she's the most talented of the class. I think she can be the best Idol winner since Underwood won it. Depends on the contracts and how AI decides to use her.
I really doubt she is faking her talking voice and can carry that without messing up. By slipping up. Too much pressure. However I do believe changes her voice to sing. Like you said she can probably sing many voices
This is her dad on her account.
Miche'le voice "as she stated," sounds like Elmo put her voice in a powerhouse. When watching her audition It made me cry her voice is a powerhouse. I'm sorry she was builled
You raised a great one
WOW!😮
congrats 🎉! she’s AMAZING! i am watching TV just to see her perform
She is the real deal. Fabulous family, wonderful support.
I loved Iam, but We'Ani should have won Idol this year. The two of them should have been top 2. It was a disgrace she wasn't even top 3. She is an incredible talent!
Agreed. Southern singers seem to always crowd the finals because they have strong support from their home states.
you sing well dang
It kind of reminds me of Michael Jackson... Very low very light voiced but listen to him sing.
She could do Voice work and make a killing. The next Disney princess. She has the control and the vocals.
I know 3 ground people who speaks in a child voice. If they could speak any way different I am very sure they will.😮
Thank you for the confirmation. I have listened to this many, many times and have yet to find flaw but then; but then; she sang the duet..... You have go to critique that.. It was off the hizzy..
Wow. That's it.
she is very good....
That is so true. She is authentic and it’s getting harder spotting the fake but you can tell in the way they sing, soul is missing.
Strange observation “she chooses to speak like that”... some do others don’t; her sound is NY (Brooklyn) and it highlights her personality shy. Many do imitate to be like her, but it’s like a nervous tick not a conscious choice. I guess after writing this, you have a valid point. Most who choose that voice are to be portrayed “innocent/fragile”, she’s holding back and restrained; is it choice for manipulation or survival?
You are breathtakingly so raw!
How do you explain a stutterer who sings WITHOUT stutter
She is not the first person to have this condition, but I gather he has a very narrow exposure to diverse artist. Open your mind and ears sir.
❤❤❤
NO! NO! NO!, You are very wrong my dear, that speaking voice of hers is the original God-given voice, the one I and you feel comfortable with when we speak, the very one you are using in all your videos, that's your original voice no matter how you sound, I too speak differently than my singing voice, totally different, when I start signing, I push all that I got in all corners, open all pipes in me and tune them to get the smooth angelic sounds, these is why you see us breathing so hard at the end of the performance, "all tools will be on duty hahaha! ", that's a fact KriSma P, God bless, Levy from Gaborone Botswana ( Africa )
❣️
But before She oN american idol,She already oN the voice and belong tO Alexis key judges,So She has Very beautiful Voice and great singers ❤❤❤❤
I THINK SHE SHOULD HAVE WON AMERICAN IDOL.
You are adorable
Paris Bennett speaking voice
her speaking voice seems like a psychological hold.
That is her normal speaking voice. If she speaks in a different voice, then it will probably not feel comfortable for her. Anyone can change the way he or she speaks, but the normal speaking voice is how a person naturally speaks. It looks like his opinion is that since her natural and authentic voice sounds different than what he perceives as normal, she must be able to choose not to speak that way.
Reminds me of Michel'le
Fantasia has a voice that does this as well as Macy Gray
If you have never heard of Matt Corby, can you please react to "Made of Stone" by Matt Corby? Its special and he has a dozen other songs I could recommend, But any Matt Corby reaction would be fine. Much love, Great video.
So by your explanation how can someone who stutters doesnt stutter when theh sing? Its somewhat like mimicking.. you focus to apply your voice to sing, because its for a couple minutes. However, speaking is what you do most of the day, so its what you do naturally. Yes she can do vocal therapy to change hiw she speaks but thats not being her authentic self will it?
I’ve met her in person and that is how she speaks. I think you needed to clarify that she could retrain her speaking voice with lots of practice, therapy and time. But also, anyone can do that, now can’t they. You made it sound like she was faking it. She’s not faking it.
Why change her speaking voice?
She reminds me of Michel'le
She spoke about it she says it hurts for her to talk in her singing voice her singing voice is low and it's uncomfortable to talk like that
Christina Aguilera has a very sweet speaking voice, however, when she opens that mouth to sing, you have to listen to her and show respect for her talent.
What if thats her speaking voice, but she’s trained her voice which projects much more strongly as she trains vocally.
What’s wrong with using the speaking voice you’ve grown up with. I don’t think it’s a choice, she’s just real.
Can it be she sings differently from speaking because it takes more energy to sing?
Then just speaking? I know for a fact, singing takes way more energy to sing any tune where it leaves us breathless.
As for her speaking voice one word the artist michelle. It's not put on two different centers of your brain control when you speak and when you sing ask yourself why people who stutter can sing a whole song without stuttering
I disagree. We speak in what comes natural to us. Singing requires a different approach. I say this because my natural speaking voice was high like we’s but when I would sing, it came out differently. If I tried to speak with my singing voice, it felt awkward, forced and unnatural. She’s speaking in what comes naturally to her and singing which requires a different focus and effort. You can tell because she’s focused when she’s singing and more relaxed when she’s speaking.
I totally agree with you. My comment is similar to yours. I should have read the comments first😂
I don't know her background, but I have heard that when some persons, ladies in particular, have experienced childhood traumas, their voices get 'stuck' at the sound of that particular stage in their development. I'm sure its not calculated and that it is probably a subconscious manifestation. To argue that it CAN'T be changed ( if she TRULY wanted to) is silly when she obviously exhibits such conscious control over her singing. But in the end... who CARES what her speaking voice sounds like if she wants to have a recording career. Now if she wants to do more Broadway... she might want to develop her speaking voice in other ways... even if it will always feel like she is portraying a character.
Jim Nabors had a completely different speaking voice from his singing voice. It happens!
Jim Neighbors had a distinctly different speaking voice than his singing voice, it’s not unheard of, even James Earl Jones created his voice to get over his stuttering, and even English actors create the American accents they use in movies, but as soon as they are off set, they speak as they always have all their life, I’m not sure they could change without deliberate practice, and neither can We, she would have to consciously speak differently until it became her speaking voice.
Paris Bennett American idol
I didn't get the impression that she applys her speaking voice as if she has a choice. Thoink you ared wrong.
Demi Lovato must be very envy of her...
