Well, in this case, the Female lead is played by Lisa Niemi. She is Patrick Swayze's real life wife and widow. They actually worked is a few movies, together. But in this movie, I believe Patrick asked for her to be cast as his love interest.

7:02 That ship is the Eduard Bohlen and it's in Namibia. It's barely 1,000 feet from the ocean, but because it's a desert, it looks like it's further out. There's also a huge collection of ships stranded in the desert of Uzbekistan as well. Erin nailed it at 13:50 because Brion James was exactly 6'3" so give her a prize! That was an amazing guess. He didn't even make it to 2000, but died in August of 99 sadly. Heart attack at a young age. Congratulations on 100! You deserve it. Love the fast forward edits with text about what you were discussing during the slow parts. It perfectly fits what everybody does during a boring movie, though any movie that makes Erin snort can't be all bad.

7:02 that shipwreck is the German cargo ship Eduard Bohlen. The shipwreck is located in Namibia, Africa. The region is called the "Skeleton Sea". The Eduard Bohlen ran aground just off the cost (about 100 meters off shore) in 1909 due to heavy fog. Over the decades, the desert has claimed that part of the coastline and the beach actually lies 500 meters further out. They kept the water out of frame so it makes for a perfect short of a post apocalyptic dried ocean.

4:51 - This guy played a Japanese soldier stationed on a Pacific Island who didn't know WW2 was over in a 1981 Italian movie (produced in the US) called 'Who finds a friend finds a treausure'. The 2 main actors are kind of legends in Italy, but objectively it's a so bad it's good movie (though not as bad as the average movie in this channel). I know you guys probably have no idea what I'm talking about, but Italian viewers might be impressed by my catch. LOL.

Looks like the shot most of this in Nambia. The ship in the desert is the Eduard Bohlen, which ran aground in 1909. Per Atlas Obsucra, the Namib desert has been dumping so much sand into the Atlantic, it's been moving the shoreline, which is now about 1000 feet from where is was when the ship ran aground.

I can't tell you how excited I am to see you not only watching this movie, but making it your 100th episode. This was THE gateway into my journey of the "dumb, but fun" genre of movies. I genuinely love Steel Dawn; I've seen it more times than I'd like to admit, and I never get tired of it.

Lesson I learned today...Fifteen minutes of action is usually enough to get the job done!!!

The "upside down sword thing" isn't useless if it's used correctly. For instance, if samurai were in a confined space they could use a reverse grip to effectively make their sword shorter so they didn't strike the walls or ceiling accidentally (which was also a reason to carry the shorter sword or dagger, but with those you only had the short length to work with). It was much easier to draw a sword in confined spaces with a reverse grip because with a normal draw on a long sword you would basically be stuck having to make a wider arc that could get the blade stuck in something, whereas a reverse grip allowed you to clear the sheath (using the exposed blade to block if necessary while still partially in the sheath) and then bring your hand back to your left side (the blade moving in a smaller downward and forward arc) so the tip of the blade pointed towards your opponent for a stab. And with knives it is similar in that it can be much easier in certain close quarters situations to use a reverse grip (less movement to draw, and easier to stab down than shift regular grip to get the point towards your attacker). And then there are blades like the karambit that are designed to be effectively used with a reverse grip.
The reverse grip became popular in movies mainly due to its use in the Zatoichi films (26 movies from 1962-1989, & a TV series from 74-79) which featured a blind swordsman who used his cane-sword that way (he was probably an inspiration for Marvel's Daredevil). There is a Rutger Hauer film called "Blind Fury" from 1989 that was a remake/homage of Zatoichi and you might find that interesting for the show. It has Sho Kosugi (he and Rutger have a sword fight), Meg Foster (in a short roll), Terry O'Quinn (dude from Lost), Randall "Tex" Cobb (always a great villain), and a somewhat annoying kid who was Hasselhoff's son in Baywatch for the first year. It is also a film where the main character was in Nam (that's where he went blind and then learned to use a sword... as you do).

12:00 Arnold Vosloo - He played the mummy and he was Darkman in the Darkman movie sequels. He took over the roll from Liam Neeson who played Darkman in the first movie.
13:50 Erin was spot on about Brion James. He was 6ft 3

I look forward to every movie review you do. Great fun! This movie was cleverly named Steel Dawn with the hopes of collecting the audience of Red Dawn. Very Mad Max'ish too; including the cinematic shot of the lone warrior with his dog.

Congrats on Ep 100! This movie commits the mortal sin of being boring. So many otherwise cool 70s, 80s and 90s action sci-fi movies suffer the fate of bad pacing. I do love Brion James though. He pioneered the henchman with his mouth always hanging open.
May i recommend "Eyes of the Werewolf"?
