HANOI: Surviving Vietnam's CAPITAL CITY (First impressions)

- Olivia and Nathan here! Hanoi, Vietnam came with a whole lot of surprises! It's the capital of Vietnam and a very different city with lots of things to do, INCREDIBLE FOOD, and with a totally different vibe from Saigon! Known for its centuries-old architecture (blended with French architecture too) and a rich culture with Southeast Asian, Chinese and French influences. We stayed in the chaotic Old Quarter where we explored the narrow streets and different food stalls every day. This country is winning our hearts and our bellies! lol 🤤

I used to live and work in VN for 9+ years, in HCMC but also traveled to Hanoi on business trips. I have since moved back to the States for 10 years now but I miss VN, its fun and caring people, its delicious food at awesome price, its beautiful scenery, and its vibrancy. Although in my position I had commute privilege (taxi card or shuttle pick up and take home), I bought a Honda Spacy and loved riding the scooter to and from work.
I miss the exhilaration of feeling so free while at the same time being part of a community of hundreds of fellow riders, like a fish swimming amongst a school of fish dancing in the ocean. I miss seeing couples riding their scooter with the girlfriend/wife hugging closely to their boyfriend/husband, whispering something into his ears and burst out laughing. I miss seeing young children riding in the front craning their head back asking his/her dad/mom a question about something. I miss bursting out laughing for having heard the rider next to me saying something funny and getting caught out for being nosy. I miss feeling so proud of myself the day that I was able to stop my scooter at the sign of heavy rain droplets, lift my scooter seat unfold the rain poncho slipping it on my head then my arms put the helmet back on and get back onto the scooter in 14 seconds flat (it took me 1.5 years to get to that point). I miss riding home and all of a sudden smelling something delicious from a fresh coal pit so I pull up onto the sidewalk and got that food for $2 for a complete meal. I hate it then but I chuckle to myself now thinking about my swearing at the damn container truck and passenger bus that run on a tight time frame and honking so damn loud, practically running us scooter riders off the road (those are truly scary bastards).
I know the pollution and the dust get to you but for some reason, I and we all adapted. And now I just feel so strange driving in my car so desensitize to my suburb. I feel the same sense of numbness when I walk into a super market and can't smell anything, not even smell the fragrance of fruits because they're all picked well before they're tree ripened. I'm not complaining about the serenity and the peaceful air but it feels sterile.
I know many will think I'm painting a rosy picture, that I'm romanticizing a haphazard commute, but honestly, it was a difficult but fun and emotive thing that I did daily for 9+ years that I enjoyed for the most part and miss now. It's kind of like you talk to your parents and they will tell you about the difficult things they had to live through in the early and formative part of their life, but they will tell you with a smile on their face.
I went to Hanoi for 2 days and ended up staying for two weeks! Such a great city!
Great video! We were in Hanoi last July and boy, the weather was different. I can't imagine being there needing a coat! We also had coffee at Nang (twice), ate a Cha Ca, and the little dessert bowl place. So cool! Love your editing and sense of humor. Makes me want to go back and do it again.
Haha thanks!! The cold definitely caught us off guard..loved the food! 😋
Such a small part of the video but the “ah my gooch” made me spit my water out 😂😂 great video!
Hahaaa 😂
This is such a great video. I love how raw and authentic it is! As usual, you guys rock!
Thanks so much!!! Safe travels! 🤘🏽
@@ONWorldTravel Thank you ☺️

Haha the same thing happened to us on the train street lol, waited a few hours haha, there is another area we frequented, no tourists, a bia hoi place right next to the tracks, caught the train during the day with no one in our shot! Vietnam is amazing! Nice vid!
Yea I think it happens to a lot of people lol glad you caught it in the end though, safe travels!

Another great video. I’m really enjoying this Asia series. Random Q Nathan but where is your black shirt jacket from??
Awesome!
Thanks!
I watch you and am reminded of watching Anthony Bourdain in Viet Nam. Top shelf!
That’s a BIG compliment! Used to love watching all Bourdain’s shows! 🤘🏽
The food looked 🔥. I was surprised to see ya'll in jackets. When did you visit?
Once again... thanks.
Thanks a lot! 🤘🏽

Thanks Taylor, we love you!!! Thanks again for making our time in LV so special! ❤️❤️❤️
Nice video.
I'm currently in Tokyo, I thought there couldn't be any more confusion, but I guess I was wrong.
Haha Tokyo is awesome, enjoy all the food 😋 🍣

Does it really get cold often? Seeing a lot of scenes with jackets. We're living in Jardin Colombia.
It definitely does get chilly for certain parts of the year like when we went (unlike other parts of the country, Saigon was very hot and humid). I would look up what the weather is like during different times of the year! Best of luck!
This is my mothers home country. are you guys still going to RV camp?
The drink price menu you've show on train street is not expensive at all for that touristy place. In Saigon if you go to any air conditioned cafe the price can be even higher.
That construction thing is illegal to work that late, latest is 10pm. I'm Vietnamese never been to Hanoi and I heard enough laws breakers story that I don't even thought visiting it, maybe other northern regions not the "wild East" Hanoi. I'm proud of my Saigon more, bigger than Hanoi yet somehow more open and less backwardness in some aspect of life.
Looks great brother 🙏❤this is James Bond
Thanks Mr.James Bond, hope you and the family are well!! About to wear your tux in a week’s time! 🙏🏽
@@ONWorldTravel Oooo 😃 what's happening in a week's time 007??
Love you guys. Thank you. I watch all your shit. Ummmm....that a compliment. Lol
Kevin!!!! You’re awesome, we appreciate you and all the support! 🤘🏽
Let consider Viet Nam as your second home country. Viet nam always welcome you guys 🎉❤
Dumb question, but would do you think the motorbike tour would be ok for 10 and 12 year olds?
I think so. They drive very safe and know the city like the back of their hand. They would have a blast
Thank you for your videos ❤ time to get married, you two 🥰✨️
Come to hà giang loop
We’re going to do it next time!! Can’t wait! 🤘🏽
The stuffs r not fake it’s a copy.😊. It’s real u touch it.😊
Welcome to Viet Nam
Do they still smoke opium or is that tobacco?
Just tobacco lol
Most people don't know that Viet Name used to be a significant factor for USA retailers. But after turning to communism. Most of the cmannifctor moved to Thai Lan and the Philippines,
Nice video - enjoy the trip !!!
Thanks a lot, it was EPIC!
Watching traffic but no rule no accident. Weird?😊
They are driving around the tame parts of Hanoi, I spend like 15h/week commuting for work and I see a few accidents every week, I don't even stop now I am so desensitized to it.
