  • Ethiopia is a Christian island surrounded by Muslim countries and Harar is other island within that island: a difficult city for sorting, the fourth holiest city of Islam with almost a hundred mosques within its walls, and the place where the poet Arthur Rimbaud chose to refuge in his flight from Europe. Here women control on the street the sale of khat, a plant with stimulant powers that sets the pace of Harar. Consumption, ritualized in everyday life of the city, provides its inhabitants a unique identity.

Hi everybody: I was born in Harar, Ethiopia in May 1967, at Ras Makonen Hospital. My family stayed there for 3 years. My dad was teachers at a Teacher's Training Institute. I left when I was 2 yrs opd. My late parents loved that town. I am told Amaric was the first language I could speak. They spoke fondly on a Sagasa (sp?) as a close friend and neighbour, and a Thabech (sp?) who helped us with domestic work. If there is any way I can connect with anyone who could trace them, I will be grateful. I woukd love to visit someday. Best regards, Giju

Umm... Ethiopia has a pretty large Muslim minority and has a long history with Islam(Muslims arrived in the Axumite Empire during the Hijarat as early disciples from Mecca, persecuted by the ruling Quraysh tribe. They were received by the Christian ruler of Axum, whom Arabic tradition has named Ashama ibn Abjar (King Armah in Ge'Ez) and he settled them in Negash around 613 CE).
Even though Christians are definitely a majority(Orthodox 43.5%, Protestant 18.6%, Catholic 0.7%) 33.9% of Ethiopian are muslim... in terms of land or regions Muslims occupies 80%. I understand that the countries around Ethiopia have very large majority Muslim populations but muslims are very much an important and large part of our demographic in Ethiopia as well.

why you keep mentioning Ethiopia as only christian country and surrounded by Muslims country? do your research first before labelling it as only Christian country! Ethiopian Muslims are almost more than half of Ethiopian population! It's really sad to see women suffering like this by the way😢.

Saboona Oromo Ethiopia has always been known as an island of Christendom among Islamic countries. It’s the Orthodox faith that has molded Ethiopian society since Ethiopia’s birth. The Orthodox faith in Christ that protected us against invaders like Ahmed Gragn, the Ottoman Empire, and the Italians. It is the Orthodox faith that is the foundation of our Ethiopian Identity. Ethiopia was, is, and will continue to be a Orthodox Christian nation. 🇪🇹
