FYI - Gloria Jones joined T-Rex in the 1970s and became romantically involved with T-Rex's singer Marc Bolan. They had a child together named Rolan Bolan. When Marc Bolan died in a car accident on September 16, 1977, it was Gloria Jones who was driving the car that crashed into the tree.

@@RaBob wow never knew that. Tragic that Marc Bolan died so young like many talented artists. Also sad that the accident stopped Gaynor's career through injury and caused her such financial and obvious emotional hardship. I read she is running an orphanage and their son Rolan Bolan seems pretty down to earth.

Born in 85, I grew up with my mom in Detroit, she listened to nothing but 90s R&B, Blues, and Motown classics - yet I completely forgot about this original or simply never knew. I was playing GTA San Andreas on PS2 emulation just now and this song came on, and its by FAR the best version, hands down! Theres something dark'n'moody about a lot of 60s chord progressions while also keeping that bounce that makes you indecisive on whether you want to dance or close your eyes and let the music wrap around your brain. I love it!

omg, yes, and same lol. I did a slightly modified version, changing ".the way you tease" to "the way it feels" - among some other changes to make it a bit more personally depict a truly tainted love I was desperate to get away from. It was kinda good, but I never quite got the alliteration to click just right, and shelved it. Hearing this version for the first time in so long makes me realllly wanna start covering it again, but probably unchanged.

@bohuslav5019...........In 1964 Gloria Jones launched a solo career as a 'Soul' singer after being reasonably successful as a Gospel artist. She teamed up with legendary songwriter and producer Ed Cobb, and released her first solo single, "Heartbeat Pts 1 & 2''. The song did well and resulted in Jones attracting a lot of interest. She embarked on several tours and did a number of TV performances.
Still in 1964 and after switching record companies to 'Uptown' [a subsidiary of Capitol/EMI] but retaining Cobb as her songwriter and producer - Jones recorded arguably one of the most significant and sought-after singles in popular music history. That record was 'Tainted Love' - and its impact was phenomenal.
Although actually released in 1965 on her new record company's 'Champion' record label, 'Tainted Love' literally exploded and cemented Gloria Jones's status as the undisputed 'Queen of Northern Soul'. I was a devoted Northern Soul fan from 1972 until 1978 - and I have never ever known a record that has had the same impact as 'Tainted Love'.
And I was even lucky enough to hear it when it was very first played on the Northern Soul scene in 1973 by acclaimed NS DJ Richard Searling at the ill-fated Va-Va's nightclub in Bolton. It literally blew the roof off! Sadly Va-Va's was raided by the police and closed down in July 1973 after only a few months. [I was there that night!]
Searling had the only copy of 'Tainted Love' in the country at that time, so we had to wait until September of 1973 to hear it again. Now according to Gloria Jones herself, the record was brought over to England by a soldier in the US military and he 'swapped' it for some cigarettes with a British guy - who then took to a local Soul Club and got the DJ there to play it.
With respect to Ms Jones this is a complete myth. Searling [who like many of the top NS DJ's regularly went over to the US to scour little known record companies for records that he could play] found a copy and brought it back to the UK. However, Ms Jones states that she didn't really enjoy recording the song. [coming from a strict religious background, the song's 'subject matter' was very risque].
Whatever the case 'Tainted Love' again exploded on the Northern Soul scene when Richard Searling became resident DJ with Russ Winstanley at the infamous 'Wigan Casino' and got the chance to play it again. Once more, it took the roof off and its association with the Casino was permanently established.
As with many of these extremely rare NS records [an original 'general issue' copy of 'Tainted Love' on the Champion label fetches approx £300 - and a demo copy will set you back closer to £500] it was massively 'bootlegged' as NS fans clamoured to get their own copies.
Although absolutely monumental on the NS scene and one of the most beloved Northern Soul 'anthems' ever - very few people outside of the NS scene knew anything at all about the record. But that all changed in 1981 when Marc Almond and David Ball - who had formed synth-pop band, Soft Cell and were regulars at a Sheffield nightclub - heard the record and released a version.
It went straight to Number 1 in the UK pop charts and became the 'best-selling UK single of 1981'. Ironically, Gloria Jones's original version still remained almost completely unknown by the vast majority of the British record-buying public. Despite this, Ms Jones enjoyed further success by releasing the excellent 'Come Go with Me' LP [on the Uptown record label] in 1966.
I have an original copy of the LP and the title track ['Come Go with Me'] also became a huge favourite on the NS scene - particularly at Blackpool Mecca. [Jones who had gained a degree as an advanced level classical pianist - accompanied herself on the record which gave the song a very polished and accomplished delivery.
Personally, I actually prefer 'Come Go with Me' to 'Tainted Love'. But don't misunderstand me! 'Tainted Love' was a phenomenon and Gloria Jones' original version pisses all over Soft Cell's! Get a copy of Gloria Jones's original version, put it on your turntable, crank up the volume and I promise you - it will blow your f**king socks off!

On this basis because a manslaughter charge could not be brought against her, only driving under the influence was left. She had returned to the US. • @armandocardona4478
      @armandocardona4478 Před 2 lety

@Scimmia - It was epic for sure but pop music in each decade is generally characterized by certain stylistic, melodic & compositional conventions which is the reason 60s music has a certain "sound" & "feel" to it & the same applies to 70s, 80s & 90s pop/rock. Heavy Metal sounds different from Punk Rock & New Wave sounds different from Grunge so it's most definitely NOT nonsense. It's in THAT sense that I wrote that this song by Gloria Jones was "ahead of its time" because it doesn't seem to fit with most 60s music in terms of style, tempo & composition & if your knowledge of music & your ability to appreciate changes in social & cultural history are too limited to understand that then I truly pity you.

    [Verse 1]
Sometimes I feel I've got to
    Run away, I've got to
Get away from the pain you drive into the heart of me
The love we share seems to go nowhere
    And our love's not right
For I toss and turn, I can't sleep at night
    [Pre-Chorus]
Once I ran to you (I ran)
Now I run from you (Now I run)
    The tainted love you're giving
I gave you all a girl can give you
    Take, not give
    And that's not nearly all
    [Chorus]
    Tainted love (Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
    Tainted love
    [Verse 2]
Now I know I've got to
    Run away, I've got to
Get away, you don't really want any love from me
    To make things right
You need someone to hold you tight
And who think love is to play
Well, I'm sorry, I don't play that way
    [Pre-Chorus]
Once I ran to you (I ran)
Now I run from you (Now I run)
    The tainted love you're giving
I gave you all a girl can give you
    Take, not give
    And that's not nearly all
    [Chorus]
    Tainted love (Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
    Tainted love
    [Verse 3]
    Don't touch me, please (Please)
I cannot stand the way you (Tease)
I know you a-hurt me so
If I do not pack my things and go (Oh-oh-oh)
    [Chorus/Outro]
    Tainted love (Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
    Tainted love (Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
    Tainted love, oh-oh-oh-oh (Oh)

1964. Perhaps the arrival of the Beatles, and the fact that this was on the back end of the Motown Sound era, denied this song the fame that it deserved. This version is much more up beat than the Soft Cell version, which seems rather dark and angst-filled. That being said, both versions are quite enjoyable.
