- čas přidán 6. 09. 2024
- In this video we install Doug Thorley 4-2-1 headers on our 2004 V8 4th gen 4runner. Towards the end of the movie, we do a sound comparison and dyno it. We make at least 37.4 ft-lbs more torque!!! We plan to tow our track miata with this 4runner - so every bit more torque helps. This vehicle has been completely transformed!
We did all of the common bolt-ons at the same time:
Doug Thorley headers installation
Y-Pipe Installation
O2 simulator installation
Gibson catback exhaust installation
Volant air intake

This is probably the best/ insightful video I’ve seen so far on 4th Gen. Dude, I sure do appreciate you making it.
Thank you. I put a lot into this video and I really appreciate the comment.
@@EnigmaEngineering was this car tuned? Could you do a video on the gas mileage? Was it just headers? Or full exhaust and x pipe. What year is the 4 runner?
@@mikelmarion this would be good to know. And 2005 the horsepower increased a lot with the variable cams.
Just a side note that is important to know. Those extra ports in the new exhaust gasket is for the 2UZFE's that has the secondary air pump. They introducted the air pumps on the 2005+ year cars. If you plan on getting aftermarket headers, make sure the headers DO or do NOT have the piping for the air pump. They are built into the new headers. It will depend what year engine you have. As for the gasket it will be the same reguardless if you have the air pump or not.
“Every single new connection leaked a lot” 😅🤣. Brought me back to my high school days when I was learning how to work on cars with my dad. Awesome, honest effort. Every math teacher would approve of your footage because you showed ALL of your work. Thank you so much for the honest detail delivered in laymen’s terms.
Ha ha thanks Nicholas! I try not to skip any steps but keep it interesting at the same time. The brute force method!
The peddle commander really brings these 4th gen 4runners alive and removed the peddle lag and man so much fun in SPort + mode
Just finished headers on my 03, yoir video was helpful to smooth out the process. But I do have to say the dipstick does not go between those pipes. 1 and 2 in means front to back. Needed to hit the furthest outside gap in the pipes and it barely needed tweaking. Retained all the factory holes and no spacer needed.
Good to know, about to put them on my 03 this weekend and was wondering about that. Did you do O2 spacers or simulators to avoid a light?
You did a great job on the production of video and installation! I put forged H beam rods and LF4 Forged pistons in my 2UZ-FE making 10.85 to 1 compression ratio plus ported/polished (unshrouded the valves) heads. Found a TRD supercharger and will be installing that also. I have the DT long tube headers like yours and y pipe but I went with Magna Flow exhaust system no cats I believe.
How has this worked long term? I wish you could drive yours at a steady 70 mpg and get an accurate MPG test. Once mine is together I will give you my results but I have 35 inch tires on a 2004 Lexus GX470. I have my Supercharged VVTI 2UZ-FE engine almost complete to be swapped in. It is a lot of work LOL!
This is such a great video. I just started following your channel solely because of the 4runner mods. Truly appreciate the help you have provided and keep the videos coming 🙏
Hi Josh. Thank you so much. Thank you for subbing too. I'll keep putting up 4runner content!
Love love LOVE the timer page at the beginning so we can only watch the bits we want to see!! I went straight to the dyno run.
EVERY VIDEO SHOULD HAVE THIS
Awesome video! Super in depth and well made.
I've got a nearly identical 2003 4Runner. Looking forward to doing this one day!
Thank you very much Taylor - it took a lot of filming! When you start the project one day, post up any questions you have
For the studs, soaking in white vinegar for a few hours loosens the rust. Then soaking in pb blaster or wd40 allows you to remove the nut from the stud with a proper vice grip placed strategically and a ratchet. I did the same and just cleaned threads on the stud and nut to ensure a smooth install. The ends you chopped off would have revealed the inverted star tip to thread the studs back in the block... I did this only because my Toyota dealers in my area didnt have any studs and nuts in stock. And they pretty pricey too so reusing the studs and nuts saved about the cost of one header...
I think 4th gen 4 runners were the best in my opinion. They look nice and stylish and they came in v8 variants. I don’t care how many horsies I have but v8. Yeah, I just think they look really cool. Edit: bro wow the difference you made after the upgrades were insane
im up to 260K on my v8. It has only seen 5 WI winters so the bottom is like new. A little rust converter and LPS3. still waiting for the header issue
Keep us updated on tune ! 03 v8 owner here !
Keeping this 4th Gen was a great choice! I believe you can use the suspension from a newer Tacoma 16+ which are Bilsteins and get a 1.5” to 2” lift. It’s a pretty good option if you want a budget lift.
Love the 4th gens. Awesome - I will look into the newer Tacoma suspension when I do that. Thank you for the advice!
@@EnigmaEngineering I put on 2017 tacoma TRD off-road suspension on my 2005 v8 4runneer. The front shock assembly will get you around 1.5-2". Ride is pretty good. I went ahead and added. 3/8" strut spacer as well for a bit more lift. In the rear, I used tacoma rear shocks but you need to press out the bushing and size up. (Replaced the bushing with an $8 energy suspension bushing).. BUT, I would not recommend using the tacoma rear shocks. I had them w/ 2" dobinson springs.. but the shocks were very underdamped. The rear end felt very floaty. I'd recommend just getting TRD off road taco front shocks/ springs and go with bilstein 5100 in the rear
I heard this as well when I asked for a good of road setup
@@EnigmaEngineering I'd go with Old Man Emu over Bilstein any day - bolts right in just like the factory stuff
Are you kidding me, Awesome video. I just got my headers in the mail the other day and I'm super pumped to put them on. Can't believe you uploaded this video now!
Ha ha - yes, perfect timing!! Good luck with the installation!
Very creative way to leak check the exhaust
Wow..what a great vid. My DT long tubes arrive tomorrow for my GX. This vid got me even more stoked. Thank you for breaking it down so well.
Thank you so much David! You are going to love the headers - good luck with the installation!
Great before and after! I just purchased a 2006 4.7 V8 and I'm getting ready to do some big changes. I cant wait to get all my mods completed!! Thanks for sharing.
Hi Travis. thank you! Good luck and have fun with your build - they are great trucks.
Beware you have TWO motor mount bolts to cut away - not one that is shown in this video
I wish Toyota made this motor an option for the 2nd gen Tacoma...
That thing would ✈
You could get a high mileage Sequoia to use as a donor
A 2005+ 4x4 5 speed auto 4runner with this engine is a rocket. 0-60 in 7.0 flat from factory, this mod might make it 6.5. Sure it’s no race car but it weighs over 2 tons.
In a single cab short bed taco it would be a total monster. With a few bolt-ons like this you could have a serious sleeper.
I have the volant intake on my 2007 looks just like yours sounds good on the v8
If you wanna see even more improvement, get an equal-length Y-pipe like the Silverados have (aftermarket) nowadays. That crossover jog that the driver's side bank is forced to make before the merge makes the pulses uneven, hindering scavenging between banks.
Haaaa, we are in the same exact boat, I just bought an 07 V8 for towing my Subaru to racing events, quick note...the 4WD can tow 7k but the RWD can tow 7300k. I'll be doing the VSC off mod on my RWD, I hope it works not just on a 4WD. thanks for the vids.
This was a great watch! We were wondering you'd like to reach out to us for a possible follow up?!
Amazing that with 200,000 miles the 4Runner still puts out good numbers
Your attention to detail is awesome. You always doing things the correct way with no shortcuts. Nice job!
Wow I never thought a 4 Runner could sound this sweet!! Love it! Makes me wanna quit my idea of getting a Jeep for this! 👍🏻
There is nothing like making people in raptors swivel their heads ha ha. Thank you!!
@@EnigmaEngineering so awesome!!!
In the wiring part of the video it would be best to use splices crimped in with barrel connectors then a better choice of the kind of heat shrink is adhesive lined SCL which isolates the rigged areas from flexing. SCL should always be used over solider joints to reduce flexing of the joints
The V8 4 Runner sounds beastly with the new headers and exhaust
Great video, very meticulous step by step and great tips. My '04 4runner has 140K on the clock and there are no plans of replacing it. I dread the day when the stock manifolds start to crack and the inevitable tick that follows. Finding CA approved CATS and finding a competent welder keeps me up at night.
When you get to that point and if you can't find someone local - let us know and we could help out. We can tig weld and saved the OEM headers so we can make a jig
Well done vid man. I have been narrowing my search into my next project car - 3rd gen or v8 4th. This by far is a watchable video, just straight to the point, no stupid intros, no hand held selfie camera fucking monologues, and probs to your attention to use die to clean up bolts.
Sweet baby Jesus, Ive been searching for this video for months 🙌🏼. My GX 470 has a wicked exhaust manifold leak. I’ve been searching for the best alternative to just replacing the OEM manifolds. I live in NM and we have fairly strict emissions testing. Can’t thank you enough for your super informative and extremely well thought out video.
Did you do it?
How much were your headers? I just picked up a gx470 great suv with some minor imperfections.
To bad all the underdog racing Development Links are broken for the parts
Great video....just upgraded my o6 sport from headers through tailpipe with thorley and Gibson. Sweet sound and performance. But what a bear to do. Would not attempt if you don't have access to a lift. Lucky for me I had a buddy with a lift.. mine was harder as the vvti headers have the extra air injection tube. Just have the area 74 o2 simulator to install with no instructions . Hopefully someone out there has a diagram. Black, red, white and yellow....urd is not supplying them anymore. Anyway thanks again!!!!!!
Nice TOOL song at 23:20
Just a heads up, the 2 wheel drive v8 4runner has a tow capacity of 7300, 4x4 is 7000
Thanks for the great video! I have the headers and was apprehensive about doing the job but your video boosted my confidence to do it.
Sounds pretty beastly
Thank you for the video, now I know what to expect out of my 05. Best video on 4th gen exhaust headers.
Thanks for the comment Bo!
I didn't need to put exhaust putty on mine, I did use a breaker bar on all of my u bolts and they seem to sealed fine surprisingly.
Great video! Put together really well. Hope I can do this to my LX470 someday
i may not have a 4runner.. but this is making me really want to put headers on my tundra now..
Thanks for the comment! Do the headers on the Tundra and report back to us 🤘
@@EnigmaEngineering sometime this year hopefully.. radiator blew up on it so i just dropped a fair bit of coin on a hand made aluminum radiator. (plastic radiator tanks love to pop when your trying to tow your other projects!)
Awesome 🤘 Good to know about the radiator for future adventures! Solid atermarket radiators make a world of difference!
Looking to do this to my 2007 4.7L v8 4runner
Great content. Keep up with V8 4Runner vids and watch your subscriptions increase. I'm subscribing now looking forward to you lifting it next. If you keep those wheels add 1.5" or 2.0" wheel spacers after the 33s it will look much better IMO.
Awesome video I’ve been waiting for someone to put out a good quality, informative video on a header install, my 04 4 runner has a cracked manifold and i wanted to see how hard it was to change, excellent video.
Thank you for the comment! V8 4runners are worth keeping alive. Good luck with the installation
I am getting ready to do the same job and mine is a little rusty like your. Glad you posted this up!
how'd it go bud? I'm thinking about tackling our 06 4.7.
I got the exact same rig dude. Same year, but gunmetal gray. I love my truck. I'm going to do the same thing, thank you :)
The Doug Thorley y pipe don't seem made well
I thought that intermittent *quiet* tick was exhaust leak, then I found out you have it even with the new headers. Nice video, sounds awesome!
Gonna be doing the headers to my 07 here in a few weeks, which will be interesting because it also has the EGR system that siphons exhaust gas off, so there's a couple extra bolts that are probably gonna suck to try and get to.
This video has me super stoked to do it though, and I'm glad I watched it, because now I'm gonna go buy even more swivel sockets/extensions.
Awesome. Good luck with the installation. I hope the video helps. Glad I didn't have the additional EGR complication. Let us know how it goes :)
It’s like a trackhalk
Nice results! You should do an E85 flex fuel conversion if E85 is popular in your area. I'm doing headers on my 4.7 soon as they arrive!
You’re pro level!! I came here because my LX470 with 271,000mi is an absolute dog lol. Terribly scared of corrosion because of my experience with swapping out it’s AHC shocks to Landcruiser hardware. This one might be pro only as I’d be working from jackstands. Very nice video!
Amazing! I'm going to research what this would be like on a 100 series landcruiser. Fantastic breakdown and description of your experience. 👍🏼
Well done. Not very easy and not cheap but some nice gains that will make you smile. Debating to do the same on my 2007 but man I hate exhaust work and without a lift, I'd probably get a shop to install it for me, making this mod even more expensive.
Thank you Robert. A lot of shops don't even want to quote it from what I have heard. Snapping a stud would suck!
looking forward to more v8 videos.. keep the content coming
You don’t have to cut the gasket. That extra material around the edges will not interfere with the sealing. But if you do do it I don’t think it will matter lol
Ha ha yes you are right. The gasket instructions suggested it so I couldn't let it go
My 2003 Toyota 2wd 4Runner 4.7L v8 I believe can only tow 5500lbs and yours is over7k lbs…hmmm… btw awesome videos. Thanks for making this!!!!
I hope you change the timing belt since you said you have around 200,000 miles on it the timing belt should be changed and water pump gas I see you put the spark plugs and just saying sometimes you can put new coils in it and that would help to for more power and a supercharger good video keep up the good work can’t wait to see you next one thank you
Saw your license plate and the Viking horns in your shop. Must be a BLS fan? If so, we would get along just fine. Rock on!
When you add an extension to a torque wrench you throw off the reading based on how long the extension is. Good work, ive been looking for a install video for these to see how bad it will suck on the ground. The stock exhaust manifold is known to break and these headers are the best replacement option. Thanks for the video.
A wicked angle of approach can throw the torque off a lot too. A swivel connection at a severe angle might only be putting 50% of the torque into the plane perpendicular and concentric to the bolt, and 50% of the torque might be just bending the bolt. Torque wrench is nice for a sanity check (and humor) tho. Thank you for the comment; good luck on the installation!
I have DT headers on my 4th gen also. Mine are bit different because it is a 2005. Great video!
Thank you darren! What are the differences between the years?
@@EnigmaEngineering my headers have the tubes running along the top of the header for the secondary air injection pump and also i had to weld on my catalytic converters to my headers. They dont have flanges for bolting on like yours do. Id like to build a new y- pipe and exhaust next.
Excellent video. Might I suggest a purely cosmetic upgrade? Change out the taillights for the '06-'09 LED taillights. I picked up a pair for $100 from a wrecker in Texas and it updates the look of the rear.
Hi Robert - great suggestion on the newer OEM tail lights. I did not realize the 06-09s had LEDs for these! I'll be looking for them.
@@EnigmaEngineering Straight plug and play, ten minute job.
Great video.... I have 06 with 2 bad cats and looking to replace it with the same headers. This was very helpful..
Thanks Scott. You will not be disappointed in the headers
Great video! Thanks! I have the 2003 v8 and love it but that rust... we should all get on a NHTSA and request e frame recall as they did with 2005+ years of Tundra and Tacoma..
Everything was spot on but I personally would've had them wrapped or coated in ah eat/rust resistant material.
Hi Shane. They still have not lost the stainless look after a few months. This is straight out of Doug Thorley's product literature: "The use of any type of “header wrapping” immediately voids the warranty. Using any sort of
wrapping material on the headers destroys the tubing’s ability to dissipate heat, causing very
rapid deterioration of the composition of the metal and the subsequent failure of the headers."
Bro 😎 I can’t imagine how your Miata looks like and that engine work you had on it 😈 after watching you work on that runner 🤜
It sounds awesome! Good job 👍
Thank you Peter!
Great idea on removing excess from the bolts
Great job, that sounds really nice.!
Thank you Chittana!
Best sounding 2uz I've heard 👌🏼
I agree with Mountain tactical. Nice job!
Thank you
Wow! Nice detailed job there. Solid looking rig. Thanks for the vid!
Thank you! No problem 🤘
Enigma Engineering : I forgot to ask, where’d you get your front skid plate? Is it a direct bolt on? Mahalo!
@@greenbanana2332 De rien! The skid plate is direct fit, bolt on, from BudBuilt: budbuilt.com/Front-Skid-Plate-2003-2009-V8-4Runner-GX470-Non-KDSS_p_685.html (1/4" AL, bare metal). FYI, the original OEM Toyota part is called the "under cover": P/N: 51405-35140 - who knew!
Magnet trick was smart 👍
Best 4Runner video maker on CZcams, thank you. Subscribed. Please please keep them coming.
Nice Video man! I just bought an 07 4th gen V8 with the typical passenger side exhaust tick, will be doing this over the summer.
Thank you Leese! Good luck and have fun with the install. It will be well worth it
Thanks for the great video! I been wanting to take this project on and with this video I definitely know I can great job.👍
Thank you for the comment! Any questions on the install, you know where to come
17:23 holy mother of extensions
Torque and hitch assembly
Always wonder why these get such tiny exhaust pipes. Especially to a single. Should be a dual with an x pipe.
Agreed!
Thats a hell of a job.
This was a great video! Now I want to do this to my 2004 V8 Limited 4Runner...Thanks much.
I enjoyed your video! Great comprehensive coverage 👍
About to start calling shops to quote this job for mine. Pulling the engine out of my Subaru is easier then this job after attempting to start on my ticking 137k mile rust belt GX!
Pulling most motors is easier than this job! Did you get it done yet?
@@EnigmaEngineering not yet. I am going to put the y-pipe and cat back on then see if the manifold leaks at all. May have some fancy paperweights for a while if there are no leaks.
Great Video! This is my second time watching.
How much total time did it take you to complete all of this work?
Great video! Thanks so much. Well filmed, good narration and editing. I’ll probably need to do a similar job on my Lexus GX sometime relatively soon. Subscribed.
Thank you so much!
My wife has an 07 v8 sport, and I have an 03 gx470. We're considering doing this to them. 1 at a time though
Do it! But if you do - let us know if the gx470 is any different
Impressive! great work! Thanks for the inspiration.
Thank you Casey! Good luck and have fun
Thanks for this. Watching this really prepared me for what i want to do. And was that Tool and Puscifer i heard playing in the BG?
Great job. I''ve got an 08 V8 and also considering doing the DT headers. I would love to get a lift in my garage though...that makes it soooo much easier. haha. Again, great job.
Thank you very much! The headers are awesome - on a new 08 it would be worth the effort. Lol the lift is cheating I know
@@EnigmaEngineering Wish I lived closer....I would be a great friend...I have beer. LMAO
Great video. Just in time. Thanks man
Hi Jon. Thank you for the comment! Good luck with the job
Great video! I have an 08 that hopefully will get the shorty headers with new cats at some point soon. The Gibson cat back is great!
One recommendation that might be worth looking into, later model v8s have a plastic intake manifold that beyond saving a few pounds, allegedly makes more power.
Thank you! Let us know how the shorty installation is on the 08! Your intake solution sounds like it might be better than the Volant
@@EnigmaEngineering you can still use the volant intake with the other version if the intake manifold, unless I'm mistaken
Change your transmission filter while doing this. I ran into that issue, not realizing the exhaust restricts access to the filter.
This with a Mbp tune on top of this is crazy!! I love driving my v8 now even with 37s
Awesome Video, got my V8 4Runner and yours sounds sick !!
My 09 is worse every skid plate bolt broke after spraying for a week in advance. I’m at a crossroads idk if I should invest in upgrades only 90k NY is tough with the salt great video!
At 18:59 you are explaining the wye pipe but why are there two oxygen sensors side by side. How can they operate without throwing the P0420 and P0430
Outstanding video! Now I just need to find a local shop to install this exhaust system. Thanks for the inspiration! And yea I subscribed
Hahah one of us!!! Welcome to the club!
Fantastic video, great job putting it together! Just subscribed. How is the smell after deleting the cats? Tolerable? And do you have any MPG updates now that it's been a few years?
Dude. I'm shocked no one has done this video before and you did an outstanding job. I will be needing to do this for my car soon. Does the new exhaust set up effect passing emissions?
The Gibson exhaust does not affect the emissions. But, if emissions is a consideration, go with the "shorty headers" that re-use stock cats or upgrade to high flow cats. Email for a better explanation: enigmaengineeringllc@gmail.com
