David M I had one of those V6s. It was the supplier that gave them a bad production batch. At 90k miles, Toyota replaced the motor with a brand new one. My car now has 310,000 miles, 220,000 with the the factory replacement motor. The engine was a solid design. I was impressed with Toyota quality and customer service. Now Honda on the other hand, have engines on there 2001 -2003 civic that the 1.7 motor without hesitation blows head gaskets about 120,000 without fail. Honda claims it's within tolerable limits. They know they had a bad batch, but cost cutting got to them. The same with the New Civic's 2.0 liter engine. Piston ring failures.

This model year Camry is so good that, although it may lack some of the "modern" items included in cars nowadays, its fit and finish are untouchable. I bought a 93 myself a few months ago, 218k on it and you'd never know.

It didn’t meet ‘97 side impact safety standards so it wouldn’t be able to be sold. Radio controls too low and it’s pretty basic inside. It’s very smooth and quiet however and I can’t believe this car is 30 years old.

My 92 camry xle v6 my rear windows roll all the way down, and its factory amp pushes my after market speakers, the carpet was even roomy enough for 0/1 guage wire that powers my subs. This generation of camry is the best family and fun car to this day

In 1999, I bought a 3 year old 1996 Camry Wagon that came out of the south with the 4 cylinder engine . White, beige interior, black roof rack, gorgeous and with the gold badges all around. Even found two extra CAMRY gold badges and stuck them mid line on the front doors near the hinges. Looks original And yes, they are GOLD PLATED! $32 on Ebay. I have been driving it ever since and still own it down here in Florida. Has never seen snow, salt, etc. and is solid as a rock. In the same condition as this video! I did add a great Kenwood Bluetooth Radio just to keep up with the times!
Then....IT happened after 258,000 miles (my goal when I bought it was to rack up enough miles to get me to the moon...about 243,000 miles). Just changed the oil and was coming back home when it started to rock and roll. Got it home only to have to tow it to a great Toyota repair shop I found near me. Failed the engine block test. Bummer. Opened the top of the engine to do the repairs and was told by the mechanic because of excessive wear he found in spite of the care it has received over the past 25 years, that it was better to find a new engine or a rebuilt one. Scoured the entire US and found nothing but high mileage drivers that had more miles than mine.
And then, I hit pay dirt. A guy in Miami (I am from the Tampa/Clearwater area) was selling his 95 year old dad's 1996 Camry COUPE (complete with sunroof) with only 67,000 miles on it. Since it was the only option at the time, we bought the entire car, drove down to Miami with a flat bed U Haul behind our Sequoia(!) and got it home. The car was a MESS having sat unused for a long time, quite dirty in the engine bay, and according to the shop, some kind of black OOZE was found in the transmission pan. But the engine sounded fine (seller said he has all the service records from his dad who only drove it within a 5 miles radius from his home)...but hell, only 67,000, one owner miles.
Next goal is to get it to 500,000 miles. Total cost of the repairs, $5700.00 and that includes the purchase of the car ($2300). But we were able to pull about $4000 worth of engine components off of it so it turned out to be a great deal. Try to buy a decent car for THAT little.
And I should tell you not a week goes buy when someone will ask to buy my Camry. Either at parking lots, on the road, or one guy who drove right into my driveway as I was detailing the car. I kid you not.
Now here is the best news of all. My shop mechanic "dialed' in the donor engine to such an extent (far better than factory), that on two 100 miles MPG runs just to see how the engine performed, I went from around 20 MPG with my older engine (2.2L) to 31.77 MPG! Incredible increase. I also added a treatment of Auto-RX to the oil to clean out any sludge, deposits, etc. After driving around a bit more, drained the oil and out came much darker, but not sludgey oil. New oil change with the following cocktail: 3 quarts of Mobil 1 High Mileage Full Synthetic, one quart Marvel Mystery Oil and one pint of BestLine Nano Technology Diamond Oil treatment. The engine now has the proper "whine" as it should and is so smooth and quiet, even my shop was amazed at how well it performed. So, fellow GEEKSTERS, take heart. You now own something that others always wanted. Like getting to date that prom queen back in high school. They call that KARMA. Enjoy. Dr. Z (Lou)

True, however, unlike today's Camry. These were basically Lexus ES models. The highest quality Camry ever built. These can go a long time. Today, the Lexus are based on the Camry and both are of lower quality. To truly appreciate these cars you really had to own one. The prices were fine if you drove on at that period and compared it to the competition. If those are the only two misses, I'd say I would still buy one again. In fact, I compare every car I buy today to that Camry. Cars are much better today, but to get the quality my 1993 Camry had back then, I need to spend 50k on a Lexus . The Features cars have now make it impossible to have that high of quality and yet still keep the price low.

i have a "92 xle, with japanese vin (starts with "j"), they mention in video the american version is bigger. i love my car. bought it for $1000 8 years ago with 127k, now has about 205k, i will drive it until i can't anymore, which gauging by the way it runs could be another 24 years. it looks like it came off the lot last week. clean and perfect, everything works, stereo kicks butt, use the tape deck and cd player daily. anybody else have a japanese model xle they are hanging on to?

“J” in the VIN doesn’t designate it as a Japanese market Camry, just as a Japanese built one. There was the Camry sold in Japan (the V30 and V40, also known as the Vista outside of Japan, built in Japan), and the Camry sold internationally (the XV10, sold as the Scepter in Japan, built in Japan and Kentucky). Toyota Camry/Scepter station wagons were built exclusively in Kentucky.

Love this gen Camry. If I was already grown middle aged guy in '92 would had bought myself a Camry with V6 XLE no worries knew could driven that car 500,000 miles without replacing nothing but regular oil, tires, batteries, plugs, brakes and CV joints if needed them (minor wear and tear). I wonder how many of these Camry's did they sell bet ton of them. I did hear the V6s had few bugs being typical man would did everything taking excellent care of that car. These cars do go forever love how they take off changing gears mines would had leather seats, power sunroof, anti-lock brakes, driver side airbag and remote keyless.

My 92 6cyl sedan le only has 71k orig miles and yes it does 0 to 60 in 8 seconds rides as smooth as my old 74 Cadillac I wouldn't trade it for a new Toyota.rear windows were purposely designed to prevent children from hanging out it's safety first people quit whining about it if you ever get one you'll never give it up.

The rear windows that do not roll all the way down was probably a child safety feature so that it would've been a little harder for little kids to stick their arms out the window. After all, Toyota did design and market it to be an all-purpose family car.

The 92 Camry was my first car loved it with its 5 speed manual it got me place. Through snow didn't except it to be any good since it was a rear wheel drive but it did excellent. I do miss it had to sell it. But man will I have good memories about that car. Did a bit of racing in it beat every car I raced, I even raced my friend in his Chrysler 500, I think it was and 05. I kept up with him not from behind but right next to him.

if you compared the control layout along with fit and finish compared to any other car in its class excluding the Accord you would not be surprised why there are so many 92 96 Camrys still on the road. I remember my mom going to trade in her 89 Camry for a 93 Camry. she had commented that the price difference between that and the new Oldsmobile Achieva where's Big And since her friend loved her new Achieva so much my mother gave it a look. 5 minutes riding in the O's mobile my mother looked at me and said this car is a total piece of shit I am going back for another Camry. as a little kid I didn't notice a difference but every time we traveled and got a rental car my mother always compared it to the Camry. Mitsubishi Galant not a Camry Ford Taurus definitely not a Camry Pontiac Grand Am Not a Camry Dodge Intrepid this piece of shit is not a Camry. It must be propaganda cuz the First new car I bought in college was my brand new 2000 Toyota Camry which now has just shy of 400k on it and I compare most every car I drive to my Camry. The ride fuel economy fit and finish BTC. I even compare my 2015 Camry Hybrid to my 2000. She may be old but she still holds up well and still is a much better car then the 2017 Chrysler 200 I just gladly give back to Hertz with the engine light on and only 7K miles on the odometer and a transmission malfunction light flashing. period that piece of shit was definitely not a Camry LOL

When Toyota finished designing this body shape in 1988, the objective was to obliterate the 1988 Accord and Taurus. Too bad because of Lexus, they held back on a passenger airbag for 1992 and 93.
That would’ve been icing on the cake against all of them. At Ford, predecessors were worried and obsessed.

I am not sure why MW expects Toyota in 1991 to offer a passenger side airbag, when so many full sizers and luxury cars didn’t have one either.
That’s just asking too much, which can be so typical of MW with Japanese cars back in the day. Always something to nitpick. All because the 1992 Taurus made one optional, yet you never heard such complaints from John for other 1992MY American midsizers without one.
