When I was a young lad I can remember that my mum and the neighbour used to talk about 'Doomwatch' the day after broadcast.
I've seen the whole series on DVD and although it is TV of its time, ie slow and wordy, it does have thought provoking stories that are well written and still relevant today. The show was well acted by watchable actors, as indeed is the film. I did like the way that the film included the TV cast - and their inclusion provides an interesting contrast in acting styles as between the film and TV actors!
It's worth a viewing as it's probably more relevant today than when made.
putting this on here was a public service - THANK YOU
I remember the Doomwatch series growing up starring Robert Powell. This is a terrific movie. Thanks for uploading
What a great actor Ian Bannen was
Really excellent film and Ian Bannen also an excellent actor - such a pity he passed away before his time. Thanks for uploading.
When was he supposed to die?
Flick vault please keep them coming , i have seen so many of your films. .Always interesting, usually unique and entertaining . Thanks .
You can't beat the horrors from the 1960s and 70s,...it was a vintage era for horror filmmaking...
Another great upload with two fantastic stars Ian Bannen was a wonderful actor and who couldn't love Judy Geeson. We haven't leant much about looking after the planet, have we?
I thank any person that has made the effort to entertain others with a genre of movies from a certain time, so thats a big Cheers from me!!!.....and you can never have and I am unanimous in this, too much Judy Geeson!!!!!
Barry Roach: unanimous in that? Are you related to Mrs. Slocombe, by any chance??? I agree with you, though. Many thanks to this channel for all its great movies.
@@mikaelsnake nice you didnt mention Mrs Slocombes pussy, i mean her cat of course!!!
@@barryroach1980..... How young are you?
@@MrLyndarenaud Sounds like about 10 years old .😠 Juvenile
She's rather lovely, isn't she?
Quite wonderful film; well scripted, quite contemporary theme and no overly over dramatic flourishes and quite a moving coda. Thank you for uploading.
Pretty good film, with a quite moving penultimate scene. Thank you.
From a time when government science agencies did [or were perceived as doing] the right thing, attempting to improve things. They still do good, of course, but there seems to be an awful lot of political bias in so many of them these days. The scientists or technologists are too frightened of losing their jobs or their grants, or the approval of their peers, to stand up for the truth when it's against some fashionable agenda.
And a general complaint: could uploaders please end their films in a decent, civilized way? Just because it's possible nowadays to overlay those promotional cards over the final minute, doesn't mean that you HAVE to do it!
Good point … bias everywhere very true .
Another under the radar Classic. Thank You for posting this. I hadnt seen this movie since 1976. Even better now that its HD.
Thank you so much for your time and patience downloading these wonderful films, it’s been a absolute pleasure, thank you keep well and safe 😊
This was a spin-off from the British TV series of the same name. Most of the original team were included, but Bannen was added on in this feature and given the starring role. There were some interesting ideas explored such as "Tomorrow, the Rat" which featured a James Herbert type of super-rat that began coordinating swarms to attack humans, and "The Plastic Eaters" which was an engineered virus that consumed plastic. The series idealised a basically benign and honourable government, that we all now know from long experience to be in truth as contemptuous and cynical as the devil...
A terrible warning of what is o come. How human beings are being destroyed by human error and by human greed.
I've always liked Ian Bannen's acting.
This film has the feel of a pilot for a TV series. In fact, Wiki states that it is based on a BBC TV series of the same name that ran from 1970-72. Simon Oates featured in both TV series & film as Dr Ridge
Doomwatch (tv series)was like an English version of the X-Files. Catch a few episodes if you can as it was pretty good.
I thought i had heard of the title before.
I had thought the same thing myself. One can't help getting the feeling that there must have been a plan to make more films of this kind.
"It's only low grade nuclear waste...nothing to worry about"......Shows how brave we brits are.. :}
It reminds me of two of the Monty Python's scenes - of the officer who lost a leg to a lion, and the black knight whose limbs were cut off in a duel....
This is a real good movie >
Thank u so much for the great upload :)
Good story, not to far fetched. We need a lot more of these type of British films. Perhaps we have run out of strange communities!
I really enjoyed this movie. Thanks for making it available to us!
Star Wars fans might like to know that the actress who plays the landlady Mrs Straker, also played Luke Skywalker's Aunt Beru.
An oldie but a goodie, thanks
1:12:04 A 'Jerkin Leather Number Two'! Don't see them nowadays, but favourite Army-Surplus wear, up to the eighties, of lots of interesting characters, from gardeners to rock guitarists...
This is a great movie with an important message.
Yes I agree but just WHO IN POWER LISTENS ??????????
I'm surprised that growing up in the eighties I missed this one and many other British films: they should have shown them more often.
Thank you for all these great films!
(and Ian Bannen FTW.)
A real treat of film excellence .Thanks 😑😎
Brilliant , love miss geeson
Good film, the kind that keeps you watching to the end. Not many films on CZcams can do that.
Ian Bannen's definitely got a touch of Anthony Hopkins here, When Eight Bells Toll, even down to the haircut and clothes. Typical British action-film styling of the day I suppose. Great films, love the suspense.
Yes I was thinking the same
Overrated Anthony Hopkins!!! Always the same; playing himself in every film!!
Yes! Love this movie
Battersea power station still in operation!! Takes me back....I remember spending ages watching the helicopters take-off and land from Battersea heliport from my bedroom window as a child. And don't get me started on the diving scene - 5mm single skin wetsuit, twin -set and twin hose reg, looks like a Siebe-Gorman...ohh yeah!
Great film very well done great acting and direction
Thank you for this .
Thankyou so much putting these movies Much enjoyed thankyou 😊
That was great, and not too many adverts. Thanks.
Adbloc, or download it.
Very exciting and awesome movie. I like this old movie. 👍
Awesome movie!
Wow!! Thoroughly enjoyed this movie ,very relevant to how mankind is treating the planet,The opening scene is reminiscent of the Wicker Man ,islanders suspicious of the incomer and an underlying sense of menace.☠
Thoroughly enjoyed this!!! MORE FOLK HORROR PLEASE!!!
Damien Blackthorne think hard on this... As this a real disease it is entirely possible that the scenario of this movie could happen given the actual reckless dumping of waste and the additives of growth hormone to meat. Not a fairy tale or scifi but reality.

Good point , and your right .Really sad the way it ended with that last sentance ..lol
You're absolutely right!
Lesson: - If you're dumping illegal waste, make sure you don't leave the serial number tags on the containers.
Good movie !!
Damn! Really good,solid,well-made film!
George Sanders, suffering from ill-health, committed suicide in April of 1972, the year this film was released. R.I.P. George Sanders.
George Sanders is one of favorite actors. I knew he was very ill but I didn't know he committed suicide. That's so very sad. Thank you for the information about him. He had an amazing voice.
From his first scene he really didn't appear well at all. For a man whose acting ability, presence and appearance were everything, it comes as no surprise to learn of the manner of his death.
I think his appearance in cult favourite Psychomania pushed him over the edge.
@@RobertLocksley385 That's what I thought too. His voice sounds weak and slurry and he looks fragile. Sad to see him like this after being such a commanding and charismatic actor
He was an awful human being and he even said this himself!
He hated all women and said such disrespectful things about them. He argued with everyone on the set and everywhere he went.
I think he even couldn't stand himself.
The dump company rep was not even arrested
Reminds me a bit like The Wicker Man with Edward Woodward,
If you can see the resemblance.
Did you know this film was meant to be a vehicle to international stardom for Robert Powell (Toby Wren)? When he surprised everyone by quitting the show after one series the film was reworked for Ian Bannen.
Good movie.
Thanks for posting.
Decent film and decent script, but I was disappointed that Bannen largely replaced the original TV Doomwatch team that I remember, reducing even John Paul to an episodic appearance.
An odd film - it was based on the BBC TV series, but with the regular characters, Quist, Ridge, Bradley and Chantry, kept in the background while centre stage is give to Ian Bannen's character, Dr Shaw, who never appeared on TV. Also, the Doomwatch team on TV had a remit to monitor potentially dangerous scientific research and recommend termination. In the film version, they are specifically a pollution watchdog. The film tries to have it's cake and eat it, too. It starts out as a gothic horror with the island community hiding a terrible secret and ends up as something different - no spoilers here, though! All the same it's well worth a look and it's good to have such a good quality copy here.
I wonder if the writers were influenced by the case of the island of the Scottish island of St Kilda, which was evacuated in 1930 following an influenza epidemic and soil pollution from peat ash. All the population left and never returned.
Luke Skywalker’s aunt works in the pub...and Pat Butcher is a resident, too....scary.
A film before it’s time.........
George Sanders the best actor EVER!!! Very sad that he committed suicide shortly before the release of this film. The British gave America some of its very BEST actor's and actresses! God bless the King, the Queen and the British People.
Not the King!!!! God dislikes this materialistic person, obsessed with accumulating as much wealth as possible and holding on the wealth gained via invasions and exploitation of slaves and other poor people!!
Man, who kills animals for pleasure, together with William, Kate and other members of his family, who all make William and Kate's children watch them shooting innocent game!
The royal family is the biggest land owner in the whole world!!
If you think that they've bought 6.6 billion acres of land, you're very naive!!
Where would they get the money from?
What jobs would have paid them so much money?
It's all robbed from the poor!!!!!!!!
Another British film good cast
Then I watch classic films like this I never feel 53 lol. Good watch guys it's a top film.
55 now then.
@Retro Watches Not till march lol 👍
@@dckelly5994 a bit early but hope you have a good one . 👍
GREAT MOVIE
Good Film
Good .
Poor George Sanders didn't look in the best of health. Doomwatch 1972, Endless Night 1972 and Psychomania released in 1973 he was top billed posthumously awarded as George died from an overdose of barbiturates leaving a note naming his main reason for suicide was boredom.
Strangely this has a poor rating on IMdb - 5.5 no idea why. I remember it when I was 9 years old quite scary - great film.
Thankyou Flick Vault for another gem! Wasn't Ian Bannen great! Local Hero meets The Wicker Man, with some Straw Dogs and Whisky Galore as a bonus. Nice to see the wonderful actor George Sanders, possibly his last movie. And a very early Range Rover right at the end. I don't want to be crude, but at 1:01:33 did Geoffrey say "Mad Fucker" ?
Jon Jones, Yep sounds like it to me!😂
Mad Factory according to the auto generated titles. LOL.
It sound like "mad bugger" to me.
No, he says 'mad bugger'.
The only real bad thing about this film is that it has a portrait of that stinking, lizard queen hanging up in every room!
Reasonable film, like Green Death era Doctor Who.Just a shame the show's regular cast relegated to a cameo.
the dr went to the island for a day and a night yet seemed to have packed 40 types of hats and caps, dr quist looks like jon pertwee in doctor who.
I'd seen the episodes but forgotten about the film! It's funny how it looks so BBC after the titles. I wonder why they didn't keep the more bombastic but evocative TV theme, though? Dropping the series score seems to have been the norm at the time, and I never figured out why. If you like the film, try to track down the surviving TV episodes, the series was remarkable for its time.
Great Film!
I love Ian Bannen in his films. And Judy Geeson. She's Georgious.
And it's only Nuclear Waste so we can all sleep better tonite 😂😂
reminded me of Wicker Man (the first, the original movie)
It always seems so hard to convince such communities in small villages, when it comes to take care of themselves they assumed like they are being mistreated not because they are opposite to newcomers but becouse they lack capability to understand whatever is perfect for them.and instead of agreeing with whomever doing something good for them ,they have almost inferiority against him/her .
It's a good movie
It's a doom if they do and doom if they don't
As this a real disease it is entirely possible that the scenario of this movie could happen given the actual reckless dumping of waste and the additives of growth hormone to meat. Not a fairy tale or scifi but reality.
Liked Ian Bannen in “Flight of the Phoenix”.
Really good movie, never seen it before, and thank you for the pristine upload!👍
I remember seeing this film in the cinema many years ago, not bad for a TV spin off or did this film make a TV series? Can't remember. Just a point to the uploader...PLEASE DON'T CUT OFF THE START AND END CREDITS. It is apart of the original film after all!!
TV spin off
I think the whole world population is still eating that fish.

That Constable played deputy MCGregor on the tv series"Cimarron Strip.
Definetly something that is due for s revial. Yes i know they tried back in the 90's. But the story in the current context is more timely then ever🙊🙉🙈
Maybe I'm missing them, but I'm sure there's only one motor vehicle in this film and then only briefly. The blue Red Cross Land Rover ambulance towards the end.
If i wore a cute white hat like that, i'd be mincing and parading at the nudist beach at black rock Brighton. Hello sailor.🤣🤣🤣😎😎🤣🤣
Haha! - my thoughts entirely when it appeared!
Of course, the associations in 1971 were rather different from how they are now. A nice chuckle out of it, though...
The miserable old trout barmaid played the doom laden mother in tvs A family at war.In real life she was a delightful lady, she had shares in Murder Incorporated and her children had webbed feet.
"Only radioactive waste?" Lol.
The Doomwatch serial slow release drama / mystery worked on tv but was totally lost on the 90 minutes big screen film..
That was a film then, now it's happening..the slow poisoning of everything on the planet.
Perhaps Aunt Beru's Blue Milk would've helped.
It was a good film spoiled by an illogical ending. The PGH causing the problem wasn't coming from the pituitary gland. It was in the contaminated fish they were eating. The first thing to do if you are digging yourself into a hole is to stop digging. The first words out of Shaw's mouth should have been "stop eating the fish from the island waters."
Irradiating the pituitary gland with X-rays would simply damage the patient and cause a serious PGH deficiency. The PGH causing the disease wasn't the normal PGH, it had been structurally altered by the radiation and was ingested with the fish. All this was explained in the film and then they spoiled it all with the ridiculous and dangerous solution. I don't know if the scriptwriters were lazy or just stupid.
This reminds me of "The Ass Fix", a 70s Cinerama movie I saw on tv.

This was a TV series don't remember how many episodes they made
Yes, unfortunately they were wiped.
@@fidomusic Some were wiped: the second series survives along with a few from the first and third. No chicks with human heads, sadly: hard to imagine that even being broadcast in those days!
ONLY radioactive waste?!
As I watched this movie, a spin-off from a series on British TV, bells were ringing in my head - loudly. I remembered a TV series where one episode told the story of a deadly disease caused by the feed given to cattle. I remembered that the feed contained parts of sheep and the world "scrapie" being significant - a word I had never heard before that time, or since!
All I recalled was the main actor in the series, Robert Powell and looking him up brought to light the name of the series. This was "Doomwatch" and the episodes dealt with various threats to the British population - environmental and man-made.
If one presumes that the episode I saw proposing a future "mad-cow disease" - totally unheard of and unimagineable in 1972 - someone had an idea that this could be possible perhaps. Or were there in truth actual cases in tiny numbers before 1972?
We will never know of course. Government would have any such information and they are not about to let the cat out of the bag!
Foreseen in 1972 by a TV series!
the music in this film kinda reminds me of mad max 1
A very good movie room watch see it before Amanda Jane mclaughlin

Certainly sounds like it! Sadly, it would have been impossible then. I think the interpretation of our other interlocutor here, with the curious name, is probably correct.
