- Doing an oil change on a 2021 BMW X1 at home. Hopefully this video will help some folks save some money and avoid taking the car into dealer for costly full synthetic oil change. Walk through on all the steps start to finish.

Nice tutorial! For any viewers with a 2020 to reset the oil light, you have to put your car in accessories mode, which is press the start button but not actually starting the car. Then, hold down on the 0.0 button on your dash until it pops up with the service warning. Hold down the button to reset when it asks to reset.
I always recommend using medium size sandwich/plastic bag and wrap it around the filter right before removing the filter drain plug. It will allow the oil to drain into the bag, allowing cleaner filter removal.

Oil drain plug max. 25 Nm
Oil filter housing (plastic) 27 Nm and its drain plug max. 7Nm.
The main thing is to always use new seals and clean everything beforehand.

I saw a BMW TECH use clips or a cloths line pin to keep the oil covers open. I’m like that’s a good idea🍷
Take the cover off. Its twelve 8mm hex head screws and makes the job way easier and less messy.
BMW also has a special "longlife" oil specification that not all full synthetic oils on the shelf meet..
Nice video! very helpful for changing the oil and filter on my 2018 X1. I think you mean cartridge filter type and not canister type, as the latter is the screw on metal type.

Can you post the tools you used?
You need
17mm socket with a ratchet. Preferably 3/8
T50 Socket for oil filter drain
32mm socket for main oil filter cartridge
Flat head screw driver to turn the flaps
A small pick can be helpful to remove the old o ring gasket on the filter cartridge.

I wouldn't use 0w20 in a turbo. That oil is as thin as water.
Here in Argentina BMW puts 5w30

My first time doing this the filter didn’t seal right, everything looked fine, not a drip overnight but when I drove it the next morning it started blowing oil everywhere, that was not fun, I hope it never happens again
Sounds like a mess, I hope that never happens to me!
@@repairandsharegarage it was, I’ve gotten in the habit of letting it run for a few and checking for drips once the compression builds up.
Make sure you pull the old filter oring off when you put the new one on. If it is doubled up, or in the wrong spot you will have a leak
@@scuba9891 yes, after cleaning the mess I realized I put the o ring on the wrong threads and it got cut in one spot when I tightened it back on causing the issue, I redid it with a new o ring and filter with it properly seated and the problem was fixed, simple human error
No dipstick is an idiotic design feature, especially as you need to run the engine for 30 mins to check the oil level. You could do a lot of damage in that time if the oil level was too low.
How do you get all the oil out if the car is not in a flat surface ??
Good question, I believe The plug is towards the rear of pan so shouldn’t be an issue
@@repairandsharegarage The only way to be sure is to meassure how much goes out and then refill the exact amount. Ill try.
Actually has to stand up straight. And if not, the oil drain plug must be at the lowest point so the filter is higher.
