- The diesel locomotive shops in the railroad towns of Altoona and Juniata have been outshopping some of the most visually unique and interesting locomotives for decades.. The tradition continues with Norfolk Southern and its many E-Class locomotives....

Very informative video AC. I learned a few things I didn't already know. Its good to see the SD50s still plying the rails as de-rated SD40Es. Last time I saw one was 2009 and it was still in Quality paint here in our local BNSF yard sitting in the darkness. I randomly stumbled upon it driving downtown and had to stop and gawk for a bit, as I hadn't seen a Conrail unit in years living out here. I would love to see more videos like this on locomotive models you want to talk about, rebuilds and regular models. And I am glad NS has kept Altoona busy with good work like this instead of simply scrapping everything and buying new GEs. Its already a dreary black and white tuxedo-esqe parade of Dash 9s and GEVOs out there in PA. So this variety makes up for it a bit.
Thanks Zach.. There's not really much that I can add to that.
A great history lesson. I've always liked history. I love your narration. It makes it easier and quicker to follow whats going on in your video. Excellent video as usual AC. Keep up the great videos.
Thanks Hans.. I'm glad that you enjoy them and hope that you'll continue watching them..
Wow, your history of these locomotives is quite impressive. Throughly enjoys the video. I’m primarily a model railroader but have been a rail fan since childhood.
The fact that NS has the people to do these rebuilds and upgrades amazes me.
Thanks for sharing
👍👍👍😎😎😎 Cary
Indeed it is amazing, Cary.. And exciting to witness first hand.. Thanks for watching.
Damnit A.C. this was your best video to date. But at only 4:45 long it was like my ex, A BIG TEASE, lol. Please more MORE EMD JUNIATA videos.
At 2:24 I labeled the SD50 as ex-Conrail #5429.. This is not a misprint, I wanted to show the NS number.. The former CR number is 6752 if you were wondering.
Love the way you explain every model number breaking it down it history great knowledge you have nice work👍👍👍👍
Thanks Billy.. I'm glad that you enjoyed it.
Another great production, I could have kept watching for a while.......on a separate note, I sent you an email to the address listed here - not sure if it's still in use
Thanks Man.. Yes, that email is still valid and I just saw it.. I'll be in touch later today..
Great Video, and lots of good info! Funny story, I actually saw 5424 going around Horseshoe curve in July of 2013, on one of its last runs in Conrail paint...That was the last time I caught an original Conrail engine. I'm not entirely sure, but I think that engine may have been the last engine on NS's system in Conrail paint.
That is funny, and you may very well be right about that being the last CR engine on NS in blue paint.. I can't say because I didn't pursue CR blue after the split but I do know that the time frame in which you caught the #5424 is around the time that the last CR blue diesels could be seen running on NS.. CSX was quick to paint their CR diesels which disappeared under CSX paint just a few years after the takeover.. As I'm sure that you're aware.
Great video, AC.
Thanks Drew
Nice information! I Railfan the NS tracks and lm always optimistic to what I’ll see, NS has done a great job with all these rebuilds, my favorites are the AC44C6M and the SD60E
Thanks Bishop.. I like those models too
NS actually had SD50’s from when EMD made them fresh, which went straight to NS. 6500 series. (I can’t remember all the numbers. And I have one in HO scale, 6511.) In the early 2000’s, NS retired and scrapped their 6500 series SD50’s. Later, around like 2010 or so, NS bought a bunch of ex UP SD60’s, which were coincidentally numbered in the 6500 series.(again, I don’t know what numbers exactly)...
Thanks for that info.. I wasn't aware of any of that..
Trains21 when I get home later,
I will look up the history of 6515 and 6511 (the only numbers of the SD50’s from them, but I’m totally sure there are more), and tell you the info.
@@thatguyy7581 OK thanks
A few of their SD50's are now SD40E's. One or two of their 50S models became 40E's as well.
Matthew Arentzen the ex conrails were rebuilt. I’m talking about the SOU (assets owned by NS) units
Yet another awesome video with a lot of very interesting information, thank you for the research and putting this one together, a trend :)
No problem Commander.. Thank you for supporting this cause with your kind words
Another awesome train video! I learn a lot from your videos. Thank you, AC! 🚂👍
Thanks Hyatt.. I'm glad to have you tuning in!
The SD60E'S are having their original dynamic brake cooling systems and vents re-installed.
Cool.. I didn't know that.. Thanks!
@@Trains21 anytime, brother!
Love the very informative info..my question were the IDEAS and details backbreaking work coming from comman scence??like GE didn't have a clue?
I 🧡 the footage at Gallitzin PA 0:53, I`d like to see more of this location... hint..hint 🤣 Great video, Thank you A.C 👍
Thanks Kev.. I did a video on Altoona over a year ago.. Here's the link in case you missed it: czcams.com/video/f6GpRk9ag0A/video.html

@@Trains21 your welcome
AC the E class Locomotives what Norfolk Southern got like GP59E SD60E MP15E SD40E Locomotives but they doing a good job with them but I know the GP33ECO Locomotive
Indeed
Thanks for your amazing knowledge of locomotives, I hope that one day I will be able to tell them all apart. I am getting better though! It took me a while to figure out what the heck a GEVO is LOL
Thanks Bethany.. That's funny.. BTW, you're making me blush!! haha
@@Trains21 Ok..Ok now I'M blushing! Too funny!
@@WaitingFortheTSEMass You're probably better at it than I am.. haha
@@Trains21 Haha! Ok now you mentioned Altoona. I am constantly watching the live railfan cam at Horseshoe Curve. Forget TV! This is as close to PA and trains as I can get right now outside of your videos. See what you started? Thanks again!
Understood.. Well, hopefully that will change for you in the days, months (and maybe) even years ahead.. A little advice.. When you make it to PA, do so in the warm Spring, Summer and Fall months!😀
I noticed the 9-1-1 and Support our Troops locos, nice touch. Could you do a history of those and the Operation Lifesaver loco?
They're in the works.
Well hello there :)
Hello
Are the SD60Es still DC traction? Or have they been fitted into AC traction locomotives, just seems counter productive of NS now to rebuild DC locomotives and leave them DC traction
DC traction
Trains21 seems strange then why they don’t go through with the dash 8 rebuild program then, but thanks for the reply
@@loganbaileysfunwithtrains606 Don't know.. NS does weird stuff like that.
@@Trains21 the D8 rebuild program had too many issues mechanically, and was scrapped on the table. This is what I have been hearing. They were junk to begin with.
wonder why the y didn't rename the GP50 GP50E . Why GP40E?
That's a good question, Jim.. One I can't answer though :-( Thanks for watching.
Nice video. I would like to be able to see the 911 unit.
I'm surprised you haven't being where you are.
@@Trains21I only go out to watch trains about once a month.
