- In this week's motorhome life video we arrive in Portugal and immediately fall in love with the country and the people. We visit Ponte De Lima to get our first taste of Portugese archetecture, head to Bom Jesus a spectacular chapel nestled in the hills behind the city of Braga and experience the chaos of a typical Portugese market in Barcelos. Plus we get our first taste of Portugese food.

Love what you`re doing . Great video. Will now follow and watch all of your videos. I`m over in Portugal and Spain in the summer for a month (currently in Tokyo) as we plan our move over there later this year. We`re very keen on Porto so will try and find what you`ve said about that.

Welcome to the family..! We are loving Portugal. The people have been very welcoming. Unfortunately we didn't go into Porto. Trying to find parking spaces large enough for a 7.4m motorhome in cities and towns is not easy, so we are mostly visiting smaller towns and more rural points of interest.We had planned to park at a motorhome friendly 'park and ride' outside Porto and get the Metro in, but when we parked up, Darren saw a man walking around slowly, trying to open the doors of several motorhomes on the park, in broad daylight. When Darren asked him what he was doing, he hastened his speed and walked off. As much as we have nothing of value worth stealing, we decided not to risk it.
We intend to go back in future, as there are several places that we would like to visit, but we will probably wait until we can downsize to a smaller motorhome and park in easier, safer places.

@@findingxanadulife I plan to be in Porto 3-4 days so will definitely send you my thoughts. Not an ideal place for a motorhome though. I had a great time in the very NE of Portugal - riding bikes. Will try and find where as I suspect it was before Location Services helped log everything. Have you made it to Galicia yet? - again, not MH friendly but very special.

Yes, please let us know what you think of Porto.
We came somewhat swiftly through Galicia, a lot of Asturias and some of northern Portugal due to the horrendous weather. Almost constant rain makes it very difficult to record and/or appreciate the vista. We know we drove through some countryside valleys and mountains that would have been breathtaking, had we been able to see them.
We have promised ourselves that we will go back again in future, at a time of year that should be much drier. Because we're on a schedule to be back to our home village for fiesta time in August, we couldn't wait 2 or 3 more weeks for the rain to clear, having already delayed 1 or 2 days in several places since we left in November. Prioritising some places over others is tough when we want to see it all. 🤣💜🤟
Ive been 3 times to Portugal and it's beautiful, and the people are so nice. Im surprised you didnt spend time in Braga, its a nice place. Im presuming you are heading soon to Porto, if you get chance take a trip up the Duoro river, the valley is spectacular.

We are avoiding a lot of the larger places due to the amount of break-ins of motorhomes. As much as we have nothing of great value worth stealing, we don't want to take the risk with the animals. We still have a lot of places on our list to visit next time around, when we can park in better locations. Braga, Porto and Lisbon centres especially.
We're actually now south of Lisbon. Our videos run 2-3 week's behind.
We didn't take a boat trip up the Duoro, but we did drive up. We stayed at Cais de Escamarão which was a truly beautiful place and the drive through the valley was breathtaking. We were surprised to see some VERY large river cruise boats on the Duoro too.

I remember Bom Jesus, such a beautiful place. So many cute spots for great pictures. I almost miss my tour because I went down and up the steps. The blue portuguese title are going to get more ornate with story telling specially if you go to Porto or Lisbon. Near Porto is this cute chapel on the sea. During high tide it looks like it is on the sea. Capela do Senhor da Pedra. You are going to enjoy Portugal a lot of things are very preserved.

The steps were very exhausting. We were glad that we parked at the bottom, so that we went downhill at the end. 🤣 It was an incredible location though. We loved the little grotto with the turtles in the small pond beside it. Also the amount of fish in the water fountains and boating lake. Such a tranquil space, even with lots of visitors.
We didn't go into Porto. We parked at a "park and ride" motorhome Aire and intended to get the metro into the city, but there was a man walking around trying to open the doors on quite a few motorhomes. He left when Darren asked him what he was doing, but we decided not to stay. We will try again to visit when we return to the area in future, possibly with a smaller motorhome. We aren't going into the centre of Lisbon either, but fingers crossed the parking situation will be favourable for us to visit Sintra.
It's incredible to see how many Roman aqueducts there are in Portugal and the great condition that they are in. We are loving it all so far.
Thanks for the recommendation of the chapel. I have added it to our list for next time as we are currently in the Tomar region, heading south.

@@findingxanadulife So sad to hear about that guy trying to open doors. Unfortunately, I had similar experiences in Porto and Lisbon they opened the zipper of my bags. Luckily I was able to see it before they took anything. So be mindful of your belongings.🤘
So great to see you both enjoying Portugal 🇵🇹 Had you never been before while living in Spain? So many pretty buildings and those tiles are exquisite. Bom Jesus looked a bit special! Well done on walking up, no doubt I'd have dragged Stephen up there too 😂 He also would've made a beeline for the ice cream.
This makes me sad we only had chance to whizz through Portugal really, hopefully we'll be back someday.

No, when we lived in Spain, any holidays we had (only 2) were spent visiting family in the UK. Sadly, like you, we've had to skip a lot on our tour so far and we're probably going to have to skip a lot more before getting back to our village. 🫤
Bom Jesús was a blinder of a find. You could park at the top, or the bottom, but as we wanted to see the spectacle of the steps, as well as the church, we decided that walking up first and down later, was the best option. I (Alison) couldn't imagine walking down first and then having to walk up them all again when you're shattered. I guess the ultimate cheat would be to park at the bottom and then drive to the top. 🤣
The real mind blowing thing is that the truly penitent pilgrims climb the stairs on their knees...!! 😳🤯
The food was fabulous and such big portions. We were so glad to have skipped the soup...!

Bom Jesús is definitely a surprise. We could have happily spent the whole day on the mountain and not been bored. We're so glad that you got to see it yourself. Videos never really do justice to the beauty of a place, but if they can inspire people to make their own visit and get out into nature, it's worth doing. 😍 What other places did you visit in Portugal..?!?
Buñol is a lovely area of Valencia and wild swimming is our favourite pastime. It's obvious that you love it too. 😍

@@findingxanadulife I've lived in Portugal for 30 years, believe it or not I mostly travelled in Portugal during the pandemic because it wasn't possible to go anywhere else. That was when I discovered Bom Jesus, I thought it was a beautiful church but had no idea about the wonderful park up there. I'm from Argentina and I'm not as adventurous as you both are! 😂
@marcelamerrill678 We would love to visit Argentina. The Iguazú waterfalls and Route 40 especially appeal to us. Darren would love to drive the Paso Internacional Los Libertadores too.
If you don't mind us asking, what made you chose to move to Portugal..?
Travelling is any guise is good for the soul and doing so during covid would have been a great way to preserve your sanity for sure..!
Some would say we're adventurous, my mum would say we're mad. 🤪 It's all in the individual perspective.

@@findingxanadulife I came to Portugal 30 years ago to raise a family, in some way adventurous too 😂. I'd recommend Gerês and near Coimbra, Mata do Bussaco.
Thank-you Marcelo. I have added both of those places on to our list of what to go next time around. We are now south of Lisbon and intend to visit some places on the Valentina coast, before visiting the Algarve. 😘💜🤟
The stone masonry bridge has two distinct sections:
The Roman one, on the right bank of the river, with 7 arches, is partially covered by the massif where the Church of Santo António da Torre Velha stands;
The medieval one, with 15 arches, two of which are currently buried.

La historia del gallo sucedió en Santo domingo de la calzada , Burgos, España. Dentro de la CATEDRAL, hay una jaula con un gallo y una gallina vivos. 😂 por la leyenda.😊
Ooh, eso es incómodo. Los Barcelos tienen estatuas de gallo en toda la ciudad y afirman que la historia es suya. Supongo que no hay forma de saber cuál es la verdad, si la hay.🤔🐓💜🤟

I'm confused!
Why do you use the hand sign of the horns(devil) at the end of your video and also on the side of your motorhome?
Do you mean to be using the 'Shaka' or 'hang loose' hand sign that surfers use i.e. no extended index finger.
Of course if you are Buddhist the 'horns' symbol is used to ward off negative energy.

Hi Simon,
The hand signal that we use is actually Sign Language for "I love you". You extend your index finger , your little finger and your thumb, then face your palm to the person you are talking to. The sign on the motorhome is the corresponding emoji. We also use it at the end of all our correspondence. Nothing sinister. 😬
We love that it has you thinking so hard about it's origins. 🤔😬
It's not to be confused by the gesture for romantic love though, which is both arms crossed in front of your body, as if hugging yourself, with hands in fists.
We love our subscribers, but not in a romantic way, that would be very awkward. 🤣💜🤟
