- In this Lake Atitlan travel guide we explore 5 villages around the lake. Including Santiago De Atitlan, San Juan La Laguna, Santa Catarina, San Antonio Palopo and Panajachel. I would say this is the best place to visit in Guatemala because there are many villages to explore around the lake and culture to explore. But best of all is probably going to be the incredible natural beauty and scenery of the lake Atitlan.
There are a few towns around the lake also worth mentioning but we did not go. Such as San Marcos, which is popular with new age explorers, San Pedro La Laguna with foreign tourist and San Lucas for its proximity outside of the lake region to the Pacific Ocean. Our travel guide is from Santa Cruz La Laguna and says that one is the best. If you can get around to many of the towns and villages you will certainly feel culturally enriched and as if you really met the Mayan people.

I love lake Attilan! The fact that you said that is a special place in the world says a lot, coming from someone who has travel around the world. Every time I go to Guate I try to go to Pana. I do swim in the lake though nothing wrong with that just if you do avoid it when the “Xocomil” occurs (afternoons)

Great video. I have been to the lake many times, the advice I can give about the boat rides is to always sit in the back of the boat. don't feel the waves as much.
Such a beautiful country! You did a great job of showing it to us .You have a very good camera person .I can't believe no fishing in the lake and no swimming.
No swimming or fishing because of the pollution I was told.
This lake is highly Protected by the Mayans Indigenous People's own all that Territories, and is them put their rules for the Turism and Guatemala wildlife no to trash, or used plastic, near their Lake Atitlan.
But the Turism understand that and respect 🙏 The Mayan Territories always welcome all of you.🙏

@@moezus it's amazing so far. I chose to go to Antigua and its amazing so far. Very safe. I have heard stories about Guatemala as well, but that's just the city, it seems that the surrounding areas are safe.

I was there last week with my two kids and their partners, they loved it and are planning in returning. Also went to Antigua, and returning too, we also went to Tikal. Just a majestic place.

Motion sickness is indeed a thing. I’m from Guatemala City, and whenever I go to the countryside I barf. I’m unfazed on a cruise ship, on a plane… but my poor stomach gets upside down with our hilly, up-and-down winding roads. Word to the wise, bring some pills with you.

There are fish in Lake Atitlan. Black Bass (largemouth) was introduced last century. Unfortunately, it caused the extinction of a rare grebe (pato zambullidor) unique to this lake, but the fish is very good to eat. There are other kinds of fish as well.
After my time in the Army, I think this might be the first place I visit.

I spent a few weeks there in 1976 as a Gringo. Beautiful indeed. We took the mailboat around the whole lake. BUT...
First off beware it is and evangelical Baptist nation. No hard liquor at all, and trying to just find a beer was really hard. Caught with pot, 10 years. Abject poverty. Gangs, political discord. The biggest earthquake in their history hit while we were camped on the lake. Devastating. Had to walk over bodies in the roads, buses halted, I took notice that it was most of the churches that turned into rubble, biggest highest buildings. Took forever to get back to Mexico and a cold beer. Mexico felt like home.
A few upsides. A quetzal is a dollar, no math. Base food pot roast potatoes and carrots. BEST SHIRTS IN THE WORLD.
