- After several hours of building, painting and decaling, my Kyosho Optima 2016 Re-release is complete. This 4wd 1/10th scale buggy is just cool. In this reveal episode, I cover which electronics I selected for the Optima and paint colors from Testors' Re-released Pactra line of polycarbonate paints. Look below for specific links to those items
The Kyosho Optima 4wd 1/10th scale buggy was the "Optimal" performance vehicle of the 1980's. Now, Kyosho has re-released the vehicle to withstand today's brushless powerplants. In this video, I show off the unique packaging that brings you back to the '80's to experience how the hobby really started - it's like a display case of upgrade parts!

The first OPTIMA model was heralded as a technical masterpiece at its release in 1985 and from then, Kyosho has set the standard in R/C development. Memories of the OPTIMA are fresh even after 30 years and its stylish form and ruthlessly efficient performance still resonate amongst modern racing machines. Now the new OPTIMA is ready to continue the battle for racing dominance, embodying the latest in technological evolution but with the distinctive OPTIMA style. The narrow backbone shaped chassis provides the platform for optimal geometry with large steering angles and double wishbone suspension with long 35mm suspension stroke. Recreated in the image of the original design, the 4WD chain system is housed inside a sealed compartment and the gears and gearbox at the center of the drive train are equipped with robust metal counter gear pinion and rear diff case. The drive train also features a slipper clutch and precision 48-pitch gear modules that reduce drive loss and fulfill the potential of modern power sources. Modern features include the choice of chain drive or belt drive as well as big bore shocks on front and rear that have been recreated in the original OPTIMA colors, plus hex screws. As a true racing partner, the OPTIMA is ready to race again with the latest advancements in driving performance.
Features:
Chassis: All plates and the main chassis bars are now 6061T6 aluminum (counter sunk). Aluminum chassis bars are slightly thicker for more durability.
Drive-train: Kit includes both chain and belt drive trains allowing use of more powerful motors. Diff gears now have ball bearings installed.
Gears: Now in 48 pitch gears. Sintered alloy gears combined with high impact nylon gears and newly added slipper clutch will cope with the current power plants.
Shocks: 10mm diameter aluminum cylinder with SUS shaft allows improved damping.
Tires/Wheels: Slightly modified tread designs and softer compound for superior grip and handling. Rear tires include inner sponge. 1 piece wheel design.
Bumpers: 2 Types of bumpers included (Wide and Narrow)
Motor Guard: Aluminum motor guard
Geometry: Updated geometry and servo fixture
Hardware: All Hex
Driver: Molded helmet design.
Option Parts: We will release various option parts.
Electronics compatibility: The 2014 Scorpion is compatible with the current standard servos, receiver units, ESC's, motors and battery packs.
Packaging: Similar to the original with blister pack showing some of the parts included. Some parts will be preassembled and parts will be bagged in steps following the instruction manual for easy assembly.

I purchased this exact thing in 1987, and I still have it!!
Still have mine to this day 😀
Looks good. Man that car takes me back.
+FILTHY5150RC Thanks Filthy!
cool painting!
also,I bout it just today!
I can’t wait for built it!
Hope you enjoy it!
i had a Turbo Optima many years ago i cant say it was 1 of my better cars. but i do like your installations Rich neat and clean better than anything i can do!
+cameron E Thanks Cameron. Always like to keep the electronics clean
Turned out real nice man..
+tommy23490 Thanks Tommy!
Very nice job.
+BustedRC Thanks BUsted!
It sure is a beauty and I think I need one to go with my Tamiya Big Wig. Need a RC10 as well!!
+daz1975ify Nice!
Looks awesome, can't wait to see it at the track!
+Michael Leone I'll have it on the track being filmed on Thursday, then edit, then upload....repeat! lol
That is an Awesome Awesome RC buggy! Wow. Can't wait for the running video and your final thoughts. After seeing it put together, looks like it's going to be a winner.
- James
+BrothersRC Thanks for watching, James! She's a looker!
I bought an Optima brand new back in '85, it was my first proper RC car. I sold it to a friend and a few years ago I wanted another one. Thanks to ebay I now have 3 original Optima's (1 in pieces that was being converted to an Optima Pro), 2 Javelin's, 2 Turbo Optima's and 2 Salute's. I also have NIB original Optima and Turbo Optima. I've ordered the re-release, hopefully Kyosho will re-release the Javelin and Turbo Optima.
+keithrx3c Nice! It's amazing how the technology was back then!
That is a nice finish and overall car. You have to add a 12" antennae tube so you can get that true 1980's effect of getting poked in the face when you are wrenching on it while sitting on your bed listening to hair band rock and your parents are yelling at you to study.
+chris smith Thanks Chris! yeah, the antenna tube would add that scale vintage realism.....lol
Got this for my birthday back in 1985. I actually wanted the Tamiya Super Shot which was standing next to it on the shelf, but I felt sorry for my dad because the SS was much more expensive. In the end the Optima was the best buggy of the two and none of my friends could keep up with me. Sure miss those days..
+Mattias Becker Nice! I was never able to afford these when I was a kid.....way too much money!
For a vintage buggy 1985! It's really impressive how well it drives
It does quite well!
Awesome! Great looking car and great video, thumbs up!
+mike macias Thanks Mike!
looking good Rich. cant wait to see it in action.
+2cwik4u104 Thanks 2Cwik!
looks amazing!
+kpopRC Thanks Kpop! Always good to see you in the comments!
It looks great I like it, back in the 80s they were popular but most of the people who owned them had a lot of money, I was a Tamiya guy I was running a SuperShot ahh good times.
+Shayen RC Enthusiast. I think someone said, in 2016 - Kyosho Optima KIT: $300. In 1985, Kyosho Optima KIT: $300
That thing is bootyfull! I like how you didn't do the traditional vintage brush this and that but puts in the pinnacle of performance!! 😂 gotta love rich.
Your paint job also came out great
+JAMMIN RC Thanks Jammin.......This is nothing compared to your skills!
Love it Rich!
It looks so cool. The aluminium chassis is the bomb!
Paint job is awesome, I would have painted it too.
Well done, can't wait to see your running video.
I'm so tempted to get another Hot Shot, but it's certainly not the kit the Kyosho is. Kyosho have modernised any old vehicle. Tamiya just rereleased with a few minor changes, but it's still an 80's car.
Great to see
Garszy
+Garszy Thanks Garszy! Always good to see you in the comments!
I want! I hope someone's selling this at the Toledo hobby show tomorrow.
+Cr125stin I kinda doubt you'll see it there.....but who knows. I know these just got shipped to shops this week though
Looks great! Can't wait to see it on the track. If it runs as well as my Scorpion and Tomahawk, you should love it. Still waiting on mine. :(
+Theibault I will be very careful. Taking it to OCRC next Thursday along with a few other buggies to film.
I would have used a stick pack above a shorty for this model as it really does help vis a vis turning stability. Otherwise that's a nice build. Useful guide on installing a larger esc
I had bullets connected to my ESC, so made for a bit easier install
You are correct, i run a lipo stick pack in this car, way better weight distribution... All the shorties i've tried, lift the top deck up, not cool...
amazing build. would love to see it run
As you wish: czcams.com/video/5y1SDhL874w/video.html I have several videos on the Optima. You can check them out here: czcams.com/play/PL5_p3gwitPIl-1lK1j0VddKl-tcR3OCEQ.html
thanks man, keep up the good work. good job on the wiring, mine were never that clean.
Thanks Marc!
Nice! I hope they make the javelin next!
+shenlonco Yeah, not sure.....I know they were focusing on the these recent 4 releases though
I had this exact model. It's in pieces in a duffel bag in my closet, but I see I can get parts on ebay!
Small detail (I did a history-write up on Kyosho a few years ago).. this car was about 13 years after their first RC car.. So not really their first.. BUT a great car offcourse :)
Looks good sir! Well done :)
+DutchRC Adventures I guess I meant first 4wd car....
Yeah.. ehm well.. the first 4x4 was the Progress series.. Which are a bit older then the optima's.. www.vintagercweb.com/progress/progress_promo2.jpg
+The RCNetwork Ohw ps.. have you ever seen these? A (very) limited edition of the original Optima :)
www.robobugs.net/wordpress/wp-content/gallery/kyosho-turbo-optima-werner/Kyosho%20Turbo%20Optima%20-%20Side%20View.jpg
+DutchRC Adventures Good to know. Talking with the Kyosho crew, I was under the impression that the last four re-releases were in order of their race releases in the 1980's. Scorpion, Tamahawk, Beetle (all 2wd) and then the 4wd Optima.
+DutchRC Adventures Yeah, I have heard of the Gold versions - Maybe only released in Japan>?
it s very beautiful car ,i ave one in 90s wtth 240s motor it s very fast car, thank you for this video.
No problem. Thanks for watching!
Awesome review man! Wow the Optima was my dream car when I was just a kid! I'm seriously considering getting this after watching your video. :-)
May I know what wheels will work on this?
+Gabriel Chua Pretty much any 1/10th scale 4wd buggy wheels and tires from the modern buggies will fit. I'm outfitting mine with some AKA EVO Chainlinks for the track
+The RCNetwork Awesome! Can't wait to see the running video. :-)
Beautiful car, can I hire you for you to build my tamiya supershot??. Planning to get a supershot. Thank you
As much as I love building cars....I just don't have additional time these days. Sorry, buddy
What kind of wheels can I use? Associated or meant for Kyosho? The one you used on aka chain link.
+peter yoo Pretty much anything with a 12mm hex - keep in mind that the stock wheels and tires are the same size front and rear. When I swapped over to modern front 4wd wheels, the wheel width on the front was quite a bit narrower
Use Kyosho Scorpion 2.2 rear rims in the front and back... It will keep everything symmetrical...
did this kit come as nitro? a could have sworn when i was a kid it was nitro. im probably wrong, most likely mistsken with some other rig i drooled on as a 10 year old. ha. nice build, always fun.
Yup, you are wrong. It was always electric...
How was the instruction manual?
+Joker Snyder Racing Very nice. I covered it in the first build update. very detailed and loved how the tools you would need were in the bags you opened up.
+The RCNetwork how was it price wise and where can I get one? I think this would be a fun project for me. Can't wait to see how it runs. I may try a lower turn motor on one. Maybe a 6.5 depending on how yours does with the 8.5
