The budding relationship between Joker and EDI has always been one of my favorite character arcs in Mass Effect 3. So in my dozen or so playthroughs of the game, I always managed to get the two of them together. But recently, my curiosity got the better of me and I started wondering - what would happen if Shepard discouraged the two of them from dating? Which you can do in two separate private conversations with EDI and Joker on the Citadel. - Hry
Big Dan, me and my wife’s marriage have been on the rocks for awhile now but one of the few things we love doing together is watching your videos. I’ve even started role playing as you in the bed room and always say “hey everybody, Big Dannnnn here” when sticking my own “big dan” in her if you know what I mean.
You’ve saved my marriage.
Jesus lmao!
Fucking weak big dan out here saving marriages
I wish I hadn't read that

"No one wants an angry ex armed with a Thanix Cannon", it has to be Joker's funniest dialogue. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
"This is all Joker's fault. Now I have to spend all day computing Pi cuz Joker plugged in the overlord" always gets me
Joker saying "I'm not Kaidan" is actually a pretty solid burn 😂
“Well duh… he’s a pile of ashes.”
😂😂😂😂
@@fasteddy44642 the plural of ash is Ashley
"Sabotage" seems like the right word. It seems like they will have a relationship unless you actively go out of your way to discourage them.
And I do. If there was the option to replace Joker, i'd have done it as well. The ship's helmsman being "in love" with the ship will gradually become a threat to the mission. No one wants to put "someone they love" in harms way. People are even less inclinded to "kill" "someone they love" What if you had to scuttle the ship to prevent capture? Joker would mutany, there is just too many problems.
@@madkabal
It's actually pretty common for soldiers to love their fellows. The most common reason given for most feats of bravery is that they didn't want to let their team down. Usually it's platonic, but the ancient Spartans encouraged homosexuality precisely to increase those kinds of bonds.
I did not see that one sneaking up from behind about the Spartans, @@FreakazoidRobots. Hard times come in spurts.
@@adamgray1753
Yeah, you definitely don't want a Spartan sneaking up behind you.
@@FreakazoidRobots Spartans also beat their children when they came of age, they weren't that smart
i really like the way joker turns down femshep when they talk in the night club in ME3, when she asks him what does he think of her in a romantic way. he was embarrased, but almost polite, not trying to laugh her off. he perfectly knows when his jokes extend beyond the boundaries of good relationships. i really felt that he respects shepard not only as his commander, but his friend.
Joker deserves to be happy and damn it if that means he wants to marry a toaster that can say funny stuff then that's what he's going to get.
Until the star child gives me 3 options and the only one that doesn't sound remotely suss is the one that kills all AI 🤣
@@rubenfajardo7064 I just choose to believe he was talking out of his ass and it only destroys reapers. And it was hoping Shepard wouldn't destroy them so told him that
@@the_dropbear4392 But that's not the case ...
@@rubenfajardo7064 lol I agree
He's, secretly, the first member of Mechanicum of Mars.
There is also a line before going to Earth that if they are together EDI mentions kissing Jeff for luck but if they aren't together she mentions picking a four leaf clover on the Citadel
so doing so makes EDI feels like she is the frankenstein's monster? grim.
After this they need therapy to realise their commander is an emotionally immature asshole.
Not quite. She's grappling with feeling distinctly different to organic life and not knowing how to feel about it. It doesn't mean she feels "wrong", just unsure.
I think the reasoning is if you encourage the relationship with Joker then EDI models her behaviour around organic life and internalises the idea that she's not so different to organics; if you discourage the relationship she internalises the idea that she is different and unpicks what that means to her.
I feel so bad for initiating the relationship and then later choosing the destroy ending, I kinda wish I just never said anything
Better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all
Spoiler Alert:
Also, working my ass off to broker peace with the Geth and Quarians, resulting in the Geth being a sencient species in their own right proved utterly pointless too...
bioware can always find someway to handwave away that issue like how in ME3 if you do things wrong the quarrians go extinct but in andromeda they have a whole ark so while the majority of their species is gone they will still live on.
@@Matty_B0y you know there are two other options? destroy is just wrong after the effort being made to broker peace between the two. why make it in vain?
@@blaze4111 Its the only good options though as weapons line Reapers need to disappear which only happens in the destroy ending. Control ending is imo the one where Shepard starts as the one controling the reapers but the AI will slowly overpower him and start it again. Synthesis is the worst option because you rewrite entire galaxy because you thought it was the best? Not to mention, again, look at Zha'til - Organics that implanted themselves with synthetic and it ended up as synthetic erasing the organics and Protheans had to go to war with them. Refusal ending is just cowardace to take action.
Oh my god “the rat tail samurai” is one of the best Kai Lang burns I’ve ever heard in my life.
The humourous part about the initial interaction with EDI is that you are right in front of a cashier it's clear they heard you.
I actually didn't know what Shepard meant when he/she said "You too" to Joker. Now, i have understood that he/she meant Joker to keep the quantum bluebox, that is EDI's soul, safe
Next one: What happens if you discourage Big Dan to romance BioWare games >o
Mass Effect 2: Hey Big Dan, how about a playthrough?
Big Dan: I should go.
Pass. I'm not looking for that kind of relationship.
Basically the refusal ending
She has a point with the whole "brittle bones and metal" angle 👀
Ah Big Dan, you missed something though. What happens in the Synthesis ending if you've done this? Normally there's a touching embrace between them when they step off the crashed ship. I wonder if they still would?
Still getting my thumbs up though. Appreciate all the great content!
I think if you chose synthesis regardless of this the cinematic is fixed to edi and joker out the ship, but then again in my real gameplay destroy was the only way to go.
@@CheoCascara fax my guy
@@CheoCascara yeah, same. I don't think I've ever done Synthesis. I did Control on my Renegade playthrough, but my canon Shep is mostly Paragon and always Destroys the MFin' Reapers.
Good point. I hadn't thought of that. I actually ended up choosing Refusal during this playthrough since I had never seen that ending firsthand before (aside from CZcams vids). Oh well.
I always encourage Joker and EDI NOT TO become a couple if I intend to choose the Destroy ending. Joker lost both his dad and his sister in the war and would also lose a girlfriend if Destroy is chosen.
Isn't destroy the only option that doesn't kill Shep?
@@AverageJohanson also just the only option that makes sense and for future stories
trying to break up Joker and EDI is for their own good. If their love is true, then they will overcome that obstacle and still be a couple all on their own. This is a test of the purity of their love.

I figured “Hell if I’m banging a Turian than Joker can be with an AI” never gave a thought to break em up lol worlds going to hell anyways!
Question: if you go this route, does the end cinematic of synthesis still play out with Edi & Joker exiting the ship together? They seem very close.
That was my first question too!
Yes complete with them holding each other at the end.
Her dialogue on Frankenstein is really great. I love it when bad choices are well written.
I actually wish there was a "worse" choice possible (make good on your ME2 demand to have EDI removed from the SR-2, or refuse to allow EDI to take over Eva Coré's body).
I abhor the concept of true AI. It'd be more accurate to say I believe there is no such thing - it's all hype, and machines can't be creative, they can only regurgitate information you feed them in processed form. Midjourney et. al don't _make art_ - they scrape the Internet for human artworks (usually without permission) and vomit out warped amalgamations of said art based on the keywords you give them. That's no more "creative" than the Reapers supergluing humans and Batarians together to make Cannibals.
Based on that, one could easily view EDI as essentially just a highly advanced machine learning algorithm - she learns to imitate organic behaviour, cross-reference knowledge about organic emotions to produce the correct responses... but it's not _real_ thought, not _real_ emotion - just the processing of data. If you think human brains are just organic computers, then you won't agree, but I do think we're much more than that, endowed with a spontaneity and creativity machines will never achieve.
Pop culture's so full of highly advanced synthetic beings that are written as sympathetic and human - think of Blade Runner's Replicants. I personally prefer portrayals of synthetic life as fundamentally alien and on some primal psychological level "wrong" to us. More interesting.
While i can't bring myself to do this, I cant deny that some of the dialogue options are interesting. Wouldve been interesting to see more of how she lesrns to value herself as a living individual through her own rationale more than an extension of her relationship
You sir are awesome. Thanks for your efforts! I've just started ME3 LE and dispite having 2 or 3 OG playthroughs in the 360 days your information is interesting af.
Brittle bones or not, Joker wants to pump iron 😝
I don’t sabotage this relationship I destroyed it!
I've done a crap playthrough once and didn't even know the dialogues would change. So I've seen a lot of these. Your vids are bomb...thanks all your time in making them!
Although I've never seen the Joker Miranda interaction. That would be interesting to hear lol
"Rat-tailed Samurai", that's a nice way of putting it.
Big Dan, Dan here too. You went on a limb on this one, subscribed. May there always be games for you to analyze.
You also can trigger hillarious conversation between Joker and Mordin, if you discourage Jocker from dating Edi. I think they still end up together despite gamers medling, it just going to happen behind Shepard's back.
"So close and yet so far away", it really feels like something out of a Shakespeare or a Tennyson.
When someone sends you the link to the Citadel Party scene can you post it for all of us to see?
Gotta do this to swallow the destroy ending. There's a chance Shep can get a happy ending with their Love Interest, or technically any ending if you romanced Thane.

Did she have a thannix cannon? That’s Garrus’s upgrade from 2, right? I don’t know the specifics of your save for this video. Is it possible the Normandy wasn’t fully upgraded and that’s why you couldn’t trigger the line?
Edi: Shorts out
Garrus: "Crap!"
Me: "Putting it mildly"
Yeah, I always go with that route. EDI's "personality" is entirely based on outside influence. She acts and develops solely within the lines someone else approved and all it would take for her to change is someone she's hardcoded to view as authority telling her to. In other words: EDI isn't fully in control of herself and her decisions. That means she is not capable of true consent. Pursuing anything but a friendly, professional relationship with her is highly unethical.
Sounds like you think like I do - EDI's like a hyper-advanced machine learning algorithm, collating and processing data that she's given - but because you have to tell her how to process that information, she's not capable of truly independent thought.
@@rdrrr Precisely. It's exactly for that same reason that children can't consent. Not only are they too young to understand, but their behavior up to a certain age is basically only them doing what they were taught and told without questioning it. They don't think for themselves just yet. EDI is similar. Even the morality questions she starts asking in ME3 is something she only does because Shepard allowed it. If they hadn't, EDI wouldn't have started doing that at all. So even those human seeming thoughts aren't completely her own. They're directly prompted by a command she was given.
Yes but last I checked I didn't need to ask my computer if it allowed me to use it.. or for that matter my adult toys... lol
I told my kids that Santa wasn't real when they were like 6. I still can't bring myself to do THIS tho. It's just... monstrous.
I always thought the Joker-EDI romance was cute, but wondered the extent to which they were able to consummate anything. Cerberus' robot was an infiltration unit, and one could imagine that before it had its skin melted away, it was able to "pass" as a human, even to the extent it could engage in sexual activities (you never know when you need to seduce somebody to gain access to secrets or whatever). Players can also equip EDI in outfits, particularly the white one, that make it look like EDI is soft and "fleshy" underneath, but then when she walks "naked" around the ship she just looks like hard metal. Anyone have any thoughts on that?
It's a good thing a pen** doesn't require bones to stand at attention 😂😭
You can ask EDI about her hair and she mentions being able to make it either rigid (as we see her most often) or hair-like (as Eva Core had). I imagine there is a degree of adjustable elasticity there.
Also, she was modeled after TIM's past fling so you bet he made her... fully functional.
@@ArakkoaChronicles Mordin gets asked by joker in a funny dialogue sequence in the med bay on tips on how they should do the dirty deed. So they diffidently did it. It involved a ton of pillows, and Joker getting super embarrassed Sheppard walked in on the conversation.
You don't have to sabotage their relationship if you end up burning all the toasters in the galaxy anyway.
Big Dan out here referencing Manslayer. My life is complete 🤣
Very cool video! One of those paths you never really want to make happen, but are curious about nonetheless.

Wow I've never seen these dialogues, I'm glad to see it now because that's some of the choices that I would never do on any of my playthroughs like choosing Morinth over Samara, killing Wrex and sabotaging the genophage
Citadel DLC conversation triggers depends on your choice of a quiet or energetic party.
I tried both. Neither worked :/
It's funny, I remember getting that same unique dialogue between Joker, EDI, and Miranda on a run where I didn't support their romance. I wonder what you did to not get it?
Christ alive I've never seen that scene in the skycar you threw in at the end before cause I always take Wrex and one of the other ME1 characters along on that mission that had me * dying * XD.
You're doing god's work, Big Dan. 👍
Well I actually finished my full renegade playthrough last night . Killed Wrex, Sabotage and betrayed Malon by killing him , Revealed Tali's fathers secret, killing the queen of bugs, renegading Garus, giving reaper tech to illusive man, siding with the geth , sabotaging EDI Joker relationship and so many other things . I believe I never took any paragon action and got points for that lol
Hot take, siding with the geth is a Paragon action if you can't save both.
@@allhandsondik7803 well I took the destroyed ending so literally everyone is wiped out from geth. My goal was to exterminate other races
Great video, thank you! I don't know what triggers some of the cut scenes in ME, either! I got a *Pick one of us* confrontation with Kaiden and Liara when I had been very careful to keep Liara in the *friends only* zone and had kept Kaiden in the romance zone!! Weird!
Interestingly enough, I did get the dialogue to trigger about the thanix cannon, but it was a glitch: they were together in my playthrough. I’ll have to see if I can find the save file
I'm pretty sure the clip for Joker's Thanix cannon line is the barely-audible lines you hear in the background. I'm also sure you can find it on some fanmade soundboards.
Dan: I also couldn’t find a clip of it on CZcams
Me: Isn’t that your job?
That's a very interesting input that I've never thought about.
Most animals that are intelligent are very social and to take those animals away from their social groups can mean death for a lot of them including humans so I wonder what self-actualized artificial intelligence would do in isolation? I really don't think it would be harmful to us but I do think it would be very emotional because even something not as mentally complex like a dog has emotions and can even experience trauma from being alone.
sabtoage their relationship you go to jail.
They are such interesting and great characters in the series. And yet again, though I've played this trilogy SO many times, and continue to tirelessly, yet again you've shown me something I've not seen in the game. I just haven't discourage EDI & Joker to the end of the sequences and talks.
Seems like an inevitable relationship lorewise. They're still close in the Citadel photo and the Synthesis ending regardless. They were somehow still together at the party too when I tried steering them away. He also got fused with the table at Purgatory and then disappeared entirely, which may or may not be related.
the player speaks the first time with edion the citadel, shesais she wants advice because shepard has "first hand sexual expirience" and i always wondered if that dialogue would change if shepard never had any romance in all three games and never slept with one of the woo-able charakters
I'm pretty sure I had the Joker dialogue in one of my playthroughs, the thing about breaking up and having a thanix canon. But that was in the original trilogy, I sadly haven't any save from it anymore but I'm fairly sure it happened (my memory is selective and I often remember some useless stuff pretty well 😂 )
Thanks for another rare dialog video. Just out of curiosity can you make some videos on how to get 9999 in armax area I have tried a couple of times and can't seem to get it. Also the videos that I have found on it don't show there class set up or what weapons and mods they use
There should've been an option to steal EDI from Joker.
Would have ruined the dark ending of her feeling like Frakenstein's Monster. Thematically, this is a better handling of it.
I say that as someone who absolutely wanted EDI for myself.
Hiw about Ken Donelly dialogue in Me 3 if Daniels died in ME 2?
So much thought went in to this game.
Devs missed the perfect opportunity to have EDI and Joker exit the Normandy with EDI having a baby bump for the green ending, s3x sl@ve bounded for the blue, and EDI posed as erotic art and joker's quarters for the red......
There's also a kind of path to make EDI more moral or renegade, just pick renegade dialogues when you talk to her, in the final mission, before goin for Cerberus, i mean aftear Horizon if you talk to her she will tell you his resolution of her path, interesting but i dosen't matter with Joker, best go with paragon uwu
On a side I just started ME3 on my latest playthrough (doing the Insanity run for LE achievements) and I did the Mars Rover Easter Egg, shame we couldn't take it with us I bet our faithful Space Hamster would love driving it around the Normandy.
I got half way through me2 on insanity and haven't touched the game in 2 weeks , too frustrating
Still bitter that Joker wasn’t a romance option 🥲
I do like the conversation that you can have with him about that though. About how he'll follow you through hell, but not into the bedroom. He quotes all the regs stuff that... never seemed to get in the way with MaleShep and Ash or FemShep and Kaiden as his excuse.
Me personally I think that with a Renegade Shep he respects them but is too terrified, and with a Paragon Shep he adores them but doesn't want to destroy the hero image or make things complicated.
Given how much encouragement it takes to get him to pursue EDI, he never would've gone for Shepard without several people egging him on that WEREN'T Shepard.
@@Kyronea yeah. I’ve thought about that too and do agree. It’s just… I’ve always been such a huge simp for Joker. When me2 came out I thought it might be possible, but it never happened. And then me3 came out and I had some hope which died a swift death.
You can't demand romance from everyone
@@ellieg.9595 I hear you. Joker's a cool guy. Funny, goofy... not really my type personally but I can easily see plenty of people going for him. You'd think if anyone would be a romance option he'd be one, and yet he wasn't. Always struck me as strange, that.

Have you noticed how zaeed Massani's loyalty mission and captain anderson and saren's story are similar?
The dialogue is really hard to hear with the purgatory club music and there are no captions ☹
Not sure if anyone has said this yet, but I got the thanix cannon comment when I didn’t talk to Joker or EDI at all on the Citadel.
I actually got this outcome too, aside from the Joker line, in my on top of my last comment to the last video about the worst ending in Mass Effect 1. I discouraged Joker and EDI's romance as an extreme Renegade FemShep.
Funny you post this Video, and that's exactly the playthrough that I was going through at this current time.. 85% - 90% Renegade and Gonna go with the Destroy ending.. therefore easing Jokers Pain lol

This is actually the right thing to do for EDI. She should explore what it is like to live life as a synthetic outside of nature, instead of just trying to mimic the behavior of biological organisms.
Exactly. The way ME3 treated synthetics like they had to be humans to be "alive" was so fucking boring and one of the many things I hated about the game.
