  • The Great Migration is rated as one of the world's most spectacular natural events: every year nearly two million blue wildebeest, zebra and antelope migrate clockwise around the Serengeti-Masai Mara ecosystem, taking in Kenya and Tanzania, and making time for birthing, rutting and mating on the way.
The trouble with the Wildebeest Migration is that if you get your timing wrong, you will end up gazing out over a wildebeest-less savannah and wondering where all the animals went. This video offers a blow-by-blow of the world’s most epic and biggest terrestrial animal migration:
The short rains in November bring fresh grazing that prompt the wildebeest to move from the Masai Mara in Kenya back down to the Serengeti in Tanzania. By December they cover major parts of both the Central and Eastern Serengeti. From January onwards, vast herds flood into the Southern Serengeti, attracting predators right in time for the calving season that takes place in February.
The herds then gather on the southern plains from March, and by April the long rains will start and continue into May when they arrive in the Western Serengeti. Raw drama can be expected when the wildebeest have to cross the crocodile-filled Grumeti River in June and the Mara River in July. The action continues into August where hungry big cats await the arrival of all the migratory animals in the Masai Mara. In September the massive herds can enjoy grazing the long-awaited lush Mara until the dark rain clouds gather again in October and the herds reassemble.
It’s important to note that rain is unpredictable, and because the Migration is propelled by rainfall, the above timeline can vary. For the most up-to-date advice for your Migration safari, send us an enquiry and we'll have an Africa Safari Expert answer all your Migration questions.
