  • I like to think of all things that are designed as fitting on a spectrum with "form" on one end, and "function" on the other. All things sit somewhere, the more successful of which reside in the middle.....

Very helpful. I think the human body is the perfect example. A beautiful created form with a magnificent function.

Love the hair :P When I design, I try to add a little flavor while still having function. It is not always easy to add form but yes, it IS easiest when you design function FIRST and then add form. Keep up the great vids! (Syc0Maniac on the Twitts)

Disagree. A linear spectrum implies that if you add to something's form, you'll automatically and inherently take from its function, and vice versa. I don't see why this always has to be the case. Personally I rather see form and function as two axis on a 2D-grid.

the middle of the spectrum isn't suppose to represent a negative 50 to both form and function. I suppose it is meant to represent proper balance. Maybe it could be better thought of as separate gauges ... like ... when you spec talent points in a video game. you can put a max of ten points in both form and function ... but you only get so many points at a time throughout the design process. So periodically, one gage will be more full than the other as you go. The more you toil at the design of something, you'll eventually get enough points to fill both stats, but if you stop too early, you might have an imbalance. hmmmmmm....

good thought. thanks for pointing it out :)

I think having an additional thumb would be the perfect balance of aesthetics and function!

literally the entire mechanical keyboard community: *It's still functional! It only takes 4 presses to type a number!!!*

Thank you for taking on this project I look forward to the next session.
Can I add "fit" to the design considerations? The designer needs to understand how people will interact with the object. The corker could function with 2 inch arms but would be uncomfortable to use.
I've always thought in terms of function, fit, and form. (my $0.02)

There could be several approaches to function that lead to different design possibilities, making it really difficult to measure it in a spectrum or matrix. I'm picturing function bubbles that bleed out into their respective design spaces, which can overlap. Like a mix between cheese and a Venn diagram.

form follows function as the BAUHAUS said (I think)
BAUHAUS was a school and movement in all design, architecture, art, industrial design, graphic design etc.

Nice. This was unusually theoretical for you. The insight that it's easier to go from function to form is true of the engineer tribes, and I count myself among them., But I work with artists whose creative process goes the opposite direction, or at least they filter their perception of, and definition of, the problem they're trying to solve in a different way. We go straight to function: how do we solve this problem, what's its essential nature, how might a solution work; they go straight to form: is there an interesting or unusual way to engage with this problem, how might a solution feel or look, what about this problem offers opportunities for beauty?

Function for me is a tall boy making biscuits on a small table. I can form and mold dough into the shape I want . Circular I have known for a long time what the fuck I am aiming towards but the outlook seems Like sleep. I apologize for posting this on your page. You speak of so many things that my brain cannot fathom and many fathom down to the depths of the ocean. I am very sorry. But I am intrigued by your thoughts.

FYI The cork screw example is a bad example... those corkscrews are actually terrible and a waiters friend is better at function and has a better form.
