  • In the automotive world the word “icon” is played out a bit much. But really, what better word is there to define one of - if not the - most iconic cars to ever grace television and film screens. We’re of course talking about the original 1966 Batmobile, the George Barris-built icon that defined childhoods for a generation. Selling at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction, the Dark Knight’s ride rolled onto the block perfectly in sync with the classic Batman theme. Every face in the crowd was beaming with excitement.
    This was history in the making. George Barris himself stepped out of his legendary creation and took to the mic.
    “There’s only one group that can bring out the Batmobile for the first time in history, and that’s Barrett-Jackson,” George Barris said. “Barrett-Jackson is the best - number one auction company in the world!” Barris’ impassioned speech whipped the capacity crowd into a frenzy.
    Bidding took off at a breakneck pace, topping the seven-figure mark almost immediately, while fans and bidders scrambled for a look at an era-defining icon. “The 1966 Batmobile is one of the most famous Hollywood cars in history and it has become a true icon that has been carried from generation to generation of Batmobiles to follow,” Craig Jackson said. Indeed, each subsequent iteration of the Batmobile owes in some part of its likeness to the wonderful work of George Barris.
    It comes as no surprise that the Batmobile shattered expectations and broke records, becoming the second highest-selling vehicle ever at a Barrett-Jackson auction - just behind Carroll Shelby’s personal 1966 Cobra Super Snake. The Batmobile would sell for $4.62 million and set a new world record for the highest price ever achieved by a TV/movie car. In a move that would make members from Batman’s Rogues Gallery smile, the winning bid was decided by a coin toss between two eager bidders.
    When the hammer finally fell, not a soul in the audience was seated. A historic precedent was set as one of the most important cars in popular culture found a new home. Auction action and excitement like this can only be found at Barrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions.

    I grew up during the Batman series and thought the Batmobile was fascinating and awesome. I was a car guy at a very young age even before the series began, but the Batmobile helped cement my love of cars forever. RIP George Barris.

    To have a wife who's that supportive is amazing. When I bought my first luxury watch, my wife literally hugged, kissed, and congratulated me. So I know what that feeling is like. It's amazing. Seeing that buyer's wife give the same support to her husband was awesome.

    As a huge fan of the Batman series, l went, along with my 2 brothers, to the World Of Wheels, at the D.C. Armory, in Washington DC, in the late 60s . There on the wood floor, sat the most amazing car l ever saw ..the Batmobile . Seeing it here at the auction, totally restored, takes my breath away !

    • @Patryn71
      @Patryn71 Před 2 lety +3

      Buyers premium gets added to the final bid price. From the Barret-Jackson page....."On-site Buyer's Premium: 10%". So it sold for 4.2million, plus 10%, takes it up to 4.6million.

    In 1967 I was just a young boy of 6 but I heard about the car show...well, what kind of a car show would it be without the Bat Mobile? I got my father to take me to NYC and we saw the car show. I went for one solitary reason...and was I disappointed! How can it be a car show without the most famous of all cars? Pretty logical for a 6yo but as I found out, not the way the world works.

    Living in Chicago I get a call from a dear friend wants to know if I still did headers because he was working on a car that a damaged one. I drive to the one car garage in a city neighborhood there sitting on jack stands is Batmobile. He is holding the transmission pan with badge reading Carr. It was a 66 Ford chassis with a built 427. Was told there are 6 of these plus the one here that was made from a Lincoln concept car.

    Makes absolutely no sense. If there were 2 of them bidding on the same item you would just make them keep bidding against each other until its highest price you wouldn't just flip a coin over it

    • @Patryn71

    the coin flip was embarrassing, and pointless, as the auctioneer isnt going to decide a $100,000 bid on a coin flip between two dudes. the auctioneer wasnt even aware it was going on, so it was a waste of time
