    I am also half blind! I find it very interesting to hear from someone who has experienced depth perception for a long time with a shift later in life. Since my accident happened at such a young age, I have just adapted to give myself a unique sense of depth using shadows, size and layering. But I love your interpretation of what I call "depth perception fails"!!! That grocery store one is SOO true! happens all of the time when I'm not thinking.

      Same here. I was born with cataracts, so i also don't have any depth perception. This might also be bcos my right eye muscles are very weak, so I cant open it fully. I look like Thom Yorke lol

      I was born with strabismus. People always ask me how in the world I can drive. lol. It's amazing how our brain will compensate with doing all these behind the scenes calculations to your point using shadows, size and layering. As I get older I do find myself not driving at night in unknown places (I'm 56) because the brain is not as quick in making those calculations to determine how far away a vehicle is - especially when pulling out into traffic.

    BTW I was born with strabismus. My strong eye was patched as a child to try and avoid having to have surgery at a young age. The downside is because I didn't have surgery, my brain decided to disregard all the signals from my weak eye and so I developed monocular vision. I eventually had strabismus surgery when I was 30 to aleviate headaches I was having, but without vision therapy, I still am considered to have monocular vision. It's such a treat watching optomotrists or new doctors who don't know my history do an eye test with the eye paddle and do it over and over and over again to make sure they are seeing my left eye (the one with strabismus) come from the outside of my head back to somewhat center when they uncover it. It used to take extra time at the optomistrist for eye exams. After I had eye surgery I only get my exams done by my eye surgeon. Thanks for posting about your experience with monocular vision. There are various reasons why some of us have it, but dealing with it, I think we all have those common experiences!

    I got a kick out of this. I was born with strabismus and never developed binocular vision. I too see things as being closer than they are. The multiple reaching for things is almost a daily occurrence. I loved how you handled it with humor. Here are a few other strange things that I see. Stairs and hills appear steeper than they are. Bright things can place themselves in front of darker things even when the bright object is behind the dark one. This happened this morning while I was driving. I almost didn’t see a black car without lights traveling in front of a white car with lights on. I was about to turn right onto the street in front of it. I was startled when I saw it and waited. I think others would have seen the black car first and turned because there was plenty of space and time. This does make life interesting when traveling as a passenger. I can’t tell you how many times I have yelled slow down, you’re going to hit that car, or covered my head in anticipation of a crash when the space between the cars was sufficient. I am a very cautious driver. Sometimes I switch eyes. When that happens, inanimate objects can move. This usually isn’t a problem, but I once did the wrong math assignment because of it. The joys of monocular vision.

    I have very low depth perception and I could relate most to the driving examples you showed. I always park too far away when driving head on into a space. Drive thrus and escalators always make me anxious because I can’t tell how far I am from the window or where the steps are on the escalator. I usually just walk unless the steps are white.. that’s a mess too. Lol

      Did you see an eye doctor, I had to get glasses at 16, that's when I found out, I was born or had it from very young because I already brain trained to figure out distances, but I totally fail 3D test at doctors. They say if you have none and someone makes something bigger or smaller than your mind thinks, it will throw you off completely, say a smaller Volkswagen coming down the road you may pull out thinking it is further away because you can't judge it without depth perception, Your mind tells you by size how far it is, Interesting. So you probably born with it too, I just want to know what 3D looks like. Is it different than what we see. Only someone who had it and lost it could tell us, 3D view master that looks like one thing on top of another would be awesome. If I cross my eyes it makes me dizzy but seems to make things look odd, is that 3D VISION. CAN'T HOLD IT AT THAT POINT WITHOU LOOSING IT OR GOING CROSSED EYED SO NOT SURE. ANYONE KNOW. JUST GOT CURIOUS AT 60 PLAYING WITH GRANDSON DOING CROSS EYES AND NOTICED IT SEEMED WEIRD LIKE DIMENSIONAL,

    I have a lazy eye and pretty much only use one eye, my right eye is pretty useless and just acts as peripheral vision. According to all the online tests I’ve taken, this means I have no depth perception as my eyes don’t work together. My right eye is never looking at the same object as my left eye. But I’ve honestly never had any problem with depth perception, I can easily tell if something is close or for away and I don’t make mistakes like in this video. I guess it’s because I’ve seen this way for my whole life so my brain just adjusted to it. But I am really curious how my depth perception is different than someone with two strong eyes, I wonder if it feels different.

    Yeah it is funny looking in machine at motor vehicle. I ONLY READ HALF THE LETTERS, They asked me to read the rest and I was like that's all there is. Finally figured it out by closing my left eye and then my right eye took over and I could see the other half only. My grandson has strabismus, he had surgery twice, still is lacking in depth perception, did the exercises, My Daughter would do them with him daily but never did get it back but he has some? Not sure what that means.

    • @monocularmama
      @monocularmama  Před 2 lety +4

      It is exaggerated in the video to be funny but I really have done all of these things. Maybe it’s different for me bc I lost vision in my eye very suddenly and unexpectedly so the lack of depth perception felt pretty extreme at first but got much better over time

      Count your lucky stars. Many of us without good depth perception live with optical illusions brought about by this.

  • @hopeforthefuture8224

    I have no depth perception but it is lifetime so I worked out most the kinks over time but still driving is hard when I need to use mirrors, Everything hard then. I SAVE LIVES BY STAYING OFF HIGHWAYS, It's hard needing to know how far or close to switch lanes if you can't judge by mirrors, My doctor said the mind trains you over time, he said I was probably walking into walls as a kid, Since I have never had depth perception, did you loose 3D vision, I fail that eye test completely, Just wondering if real life looks like a 3D master view kids Toy or is is just flat like I see, I have two eyes that work but never see with both, only one has ever worked at the same time, one is very weak the other dominant. I am curious for those that lost their depth perception more recently, if things look different now, Wondering if I missed something over the yrs of how the world looks to others. I know they master view toys look cool but is that 3D vision, I have no clue.
