  • One of the 'founding fathers' of Trinity School for Ministry; renowned author, speaker, and Theological teacher--the Reverend Dr. J.I. Packer--speaks on Personal Holiness from the heart and head of one of Western Christendom's most beloved and providentially influential, Evangelical voices in the 20th & 21st centuries. It was the school's honor to host this event in Common's Hall on the eve of January 16th, 2014.

    The 5 principles of holiness (26.00 timestamp)
    1. Being is basic to doing. ( You do holy things because of whom God has made you rather than doing things to make you holy)
    2. Knowing is basic to acting (Knowing God and having a personal relationship with him is prior to acting out holy)
    3. God's work of salvation is completely paid for. ( Living out holy doesn't save you, only Gods grace can save you.)Our retribution has been paid for. God treats as we are, his children.
    4. God's works of sanctification is basic to our desire to obey. "Work out you salvationwith fear and holiness for it is God who does it"
    5. The purpose of pleasing God is basic to avoiding sin. ( Focus your priority on how to be pleasing to God rather than focusingon sin and avoiding it. When you Focus on Jesus your binding sins will fall away.)

      sergy biju Buenos días a Serge. Gracias por su resumen. Voy a tratar de traducir para Deisy porque ella lo pidió. Invito critica de alguien que no este de acuerdo con mi traducción.
      Los cinco principio de santidad:
      1. Ser es mas básico que hacer. (Hacemos cosas santas porque Dios nos ha hecho santos no porque hemos hecho cosas santas.)
      2. Conocer es básico para actuar. (Conocer a Dios y tener una relación personal con el viene antes de actos santos.)
      3. La obra de Dios para salvarnos ya se pagó . (Nos hemos salvado por la gracia de Dios.)

    • @annbrucepineda8093
      @annbrucepineda8093 Před 4 lety

      4. La obra de Dios para santificarnos es básico para nuestra obediencia. (Enfoque su prioridad en hacer lo que le da placer a Dios no en evitar el pecado. Cuando nos enfocamos en Jesus, nuestras cadenas, el pecado que nos atrapa, se desaparece.)
      5. El propósito de agradar a Dios es básico. (Enfoque su prioridad en agradar a Dios.)

    So few of such caliber of men of God left in the world. I am crying many tears because the false and the worldly run the scene and the children and young people no longer have any good pastors who direct them in the narrow way as disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is sad to see the world in such rebellion to the only true and living God, we who know Him must keep asking Him to raise up labourers and send them in to His harvest. God’s purposes and plans are being fulfilled before our very eyes no matter what is happening. We gain some insight into the times our Lord groaned in the Spirit at what He saw and heard whilst hear. Soon He will return and restore all things and so glorify the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit forever.

    I can only assume that those who disliked the video were strongly challenged by their own lack of effort in their pursuit of personal, biblical holiness. Either that, or they believe in hyper grace and don’t see a need to live a life in keeping with being a follower of Jesus Christ, or that they are Pharisees who believe they are there already. Another of the 20th Century custodians now at rest. Who will take up the mantle for the Church of the 21st Century?

    One of the greatest Bible teachers of all time! How fortunate the Church has been to have had his abilities for so long in his teaching, books and videos. We have now lost in one year or so, Billy Graham, Ravi Zacharias, R.C. Sproul, Jim Graham and now Jim Packer. Heaven is the richer (however theologically inaccurate that may be!) and we are the poorer. But we fail to follow their example of teaching and preaching at our peril. David Pawson and R T Kendall both have written comparable books on Packer’s theme of Holiness and the Gospel of Righteousness, and how it is so often missing or at least not balanced with the Gospel of Love in our churches today.

    One thing I've always wished would be pointed out regarding repentance is this. Of course, we all know repentance is a duty. But how many of us also know that, before it is a duty, it is a gift...a gift of opportunity, an open door, an invitation to be freely forgiven. Poor Esau, we are told, sought this gift of opportunity with tears! But, alas, it was too late.
    How have we allowed Satan to utterly upend the truth on us, to turn truth into a lie, light into darkness, opportunity into a bitter pill that must be swallowed?
    Why would any fool suppose that God will be pleased to grant forgiveness though we reject repentance? Do we suppose the Prodigal Son's father would have received his son in the same manner had his son returned with his whores and drinking buddies in tow?
    When John the Baptist preached repentance it was received as Good News that there was still time to repent. His hearers gladly stepped into the Jordan. I should think there was not to be found one disgruntled, begrudging baptizee in the bunch.
    To the clueless, pagan question: "Have I GOT to repent?" the answer must always be: "For heaven's sake, no! By no means! You GET to repent!"
    Indeed, no one else is even allowed in the water.

    J.I.Packer On Personal Holiness
    czcams.com/video/EDnk-jSz7Z4/video.html
    Holiness in a Christian will produce in you:
    A desire to love God.
    A desire to please God.
    A desire to serve God.
    1. Being is basic to doing
    The essence of discipleship is NOT keep doing things. Out of being, comes doing. Being comes FIRST, before you do things. Who are you as a Christian?
    2. Knowing is basic to acting
    Christianity is a matter of doing what you know, what you learn from doctrines what you should do. Until you know what you should do, don't do it. Make sure that you know all you need to know.
    3. God's work of saving us underlies God's work in our sanctification
    Retribution is a basic fact. It has already been afflicted on Jesus. We don't have to face any possibility of condemnation. Hope never stops even though life ends here on earth.
    4. God's work of sanctification is the basis to our obedience
    Philippians 2:12-13, 'Work out your salvation with all reverence for it is God who works in you who makes you will and do according to His good pleasure.'
    This is a tremendous statement much neglected!
    5. The purpose of pleasing God is the basis of avoiding sin
    The practice of rejoicing, hoping and thanking our God is bigger than avoiding sin.
    Just avoiding sin is very negative. We have to make sure that we don't fall into the trap of falling into sin. Is this holiness?
    Please God is the basis of holiness, NOT avoiding sin even though we should avoid sin.
    The principles are clear. Maintaining these can be invigorating even though you can be isolated. You can be abused or persecuted, like people throwing eggs to your face!
    Holy living is evangelical, based on the biblical doctrine. Moralistic, therapeutic, deism forms the current world value system that is not based on the Bible. Beware of their influence on your biblical value system. The world value system doesn't talk about grace, the Holy Spirit, or love or the new live.
    Personal holiness is living out the Gospel, living the transformation of heart. It has to be anti-theatrical against various forces of anti-Christianity. The anti thesis is strong and clear, Christians practising holy living must be strong and united to oppose those who deny the finality of Christianity.
    The Church is the new people with Christ as the Head.
    Isolation from church, fellowship can help us?
    NO, it doesn't help. Isolation from church and fellowship is NOT Holiness!
    We must be moral even when the society is not.
    Personal Holiness for our time must be devotional. It must be an expression of love and adoration towards God. That's what we were made for to glorify God, saved for to express what God has saved us for, the fullness of joy in Christian life.
    I believe these are the keys that are triumphantly different from unbelievers. Conviction and facing Christ as what life has to delivered.
    It has the power to change us. These are the practical principles of personal holiness.
    CONCLUSION
    Revelation 2-3. John deals with 7 congregations. With 5 of them, he finds faults. He deals with them seriously. These faults that we can easily fall if we don't watch out.
    One church is criticized for leaving its first love. Don't neglect your heart. Keep your heart, rejoicing, loving and hoping.
    Another is lapse in morality, tolerating the intolerable. It includes sexual behaviours as it is today.
    Another church is on the verge of yielding to fear. Fear inhibits creative actions of all sorts. Don't indulge in self satisfaction.
    The apostles had an amazing transformation as that's how they turned the world upside down.

      Una cosa que ha dicho otro pastor y me ayuda a entender que nuestras oraciones y nuestros deseos deben ser, no solo para mi y mis seres queridos sino para el reino de Dios. Amo a mi familia y mis amigos pero la pandemia nos enseña que, aun si nos aislamos, antes de dormir podemos orar por ejemplo para los que trabajan en la noche - personal medico, bomberos, la policía y hasta los camioneros que nos traen alimentos y otras cosas esenciales - si los conocemos o no. John Donne dijo en ingles, “Don’t ask for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee.”

  • @MrMurfle
    @MrMurfle Před 4 lety +1

    I guess I may need to watch again. I did catch 5 principles, but I don't recall much, if anything, of practical, boots-on-the-ground instruction for how to be holy. How much holiness, whatever it consists of, is necessary to be saved to eternal life, anyway? From what I see, some people are trying much harder (and with more apparent success) than others to please God.
    That being said, it seems strange that Packer would have to encourage pastors to focus on personal holiness (I'm not sure what other kind there is). Really, should any Christian with some time in the faith need to be reminded?

    • @craigstoller1241
      @craigstoller1241 Před 3 lety +2

      Mr. Murfle, to answer your question, “how much holiness is needed to be saved to eternal life?” An amount that we cannot achieve. The amount we need has been achieved for us in the person and work of Christ. Our holy works are a natural response to what Christ has done for us and a response because of our new identity in Christ.

    • @AngieMck
      @AngieMck Před 3 lety +2

      Yes, reminders are needed daily for all of us who would follow Christ, and live holy. The Word of God is replete with passages reminding believers and unbelievers concerning the revelation of the Truth of God and His Christ, Jesus, as attested to in His Word. As human beings, we readily and easily forget those things which are not in our sight or mind. Therefore, we must make every effort to diligently commune with God through His Son according to His Word by the power of the Holy Spirit as much as we do other things in our daily lives of vital importance. It is truly a daunting task when so much of the cares of this life demand, yet distract us from the true reality of who we are in Christ Jesus, our Lord. Also, encouraging people in the Lord is a good and positive thing to do whether they be pastors or laymen. We all need it.🙏🏽✝️🌈
