    But recording a lecture and listening to it....and re-listening (several times) because I drifted off daydreaming... again...just means I have to put in 3-4 times the work ...just to be at the same level as a person who can focus in class. The reality of that is kinda depressing.
    Honestly, I'm not surprised that some people just want a drug to help focus

    • @kamikkaze5164
      @kamikkaze5164 Před 3 lety +62

      It's easier, but it's not like the drug itself makes the miracle. You need to put effort, its just a "shortcut".
      It really sucks that the world it's not too meant to ADHD brains.

    • @kamikkaze5164

      U don't necessarily need to research again and again. What you can do is to see the recorder,see the time that you realised you daydreamed, and then put in the sheet. So later, you just need to see this particular moment

    • @MsBorkbork
      @MsBorkbork Před 3 lety +12

      Livescribe pens. Medication helps, still need the pen. Then I can just make a star when I drift off and return to that moment later without relistening to the whole lecture (and usually zone out at that moment again anyway.)

    Thank you for these tips. Another one I’ve learned (after struggling through the university system with procrastination and turning in all assignments at 11:59pm of the deadline for 5 years) is the 5 minute rule. Just commit to spending 5 minutes on an assignment to get started, that way you feel accomplished and you might get in the zone to get more done. Also, you don’t shame spiral for not being able to study for an hour because you hit your goal of 5 minutes. I use this at work too when I’m struggling to initiate a task. Great video!!

      yes agreed, I work better if I give myself smaller chunks of work to do and move on, even trying to think of taking on an entire project from start to finish in one setting is always way too overwhelming. I can't do 10 minutes of study. Once I get started, I tend to be in the 'zone' for about two hours. If I get out of the zone, I find it harder to get back to it. That's on a good day though. If I take too long of a break, I'll feel too overwhelmed to get back to study. I also tend to do better with just one task, switching between tasks gets too overwhelming, I find it really hard to start a new task once I've completed the previous one, which rarely happens straight away anyways, it normally takes me days just to complete one task! I haven't been diagnosed yet, however I'm planning on applying for an assessment. I think that's why I struggled with A levels, as I did 3 subjects. The exams for each of them were also close together.

      Same. I'm also 29 and recently diagnosed with ADHD (taking elvanse) and dyslexia whilst at uni - something that went undiagnosed all through primary and high school. I felt very damaged by the school system and after 10 years of travel, I decided to find redemption and return to study. I'm studying Outdoor leadership and management for a number of reasons mainly because it suits my passions and a big part was to be able to give back to younger versions of myself - to let them know that you are ok and you just learn and get engaged in learning differently. I've struggled immensely with the written work but I'm managing to get a lot of help through the uni, I've been able to get a laptop, printer, and software and extra time on assessments. I also a personal tutor who helps me break down the work and talk through in more detail what needs to be done. This is done through the UNI and DSA (if you are in the UK) you can get a mentor also that helps you furthers structure yourself with studying and structuring your day to day. I think a good tip is to really think about why you are doing it in the first place and remind yourself when it gets tough why you are there so that you don't lose track and think wtf am I here for and putting myself through this. I think overall don't be afraid to ask for help no matter how big or small - that's what the uni is there for. And if needs look outside of the uni to get the help you need so that things can be fast-tracked, you can also say to the uni hey this is what iv done outside of the unis help so that it can be fast-tracked and they can help with the funding with that also. Just remember it is ok that get distracted easily and you have started this because it's what you love and not to punish yourself.

    In high-school (secondary school in Ireland) I was 'naturally' smart enough to be encouraged to switch to higher level Math classes. However, because it required such concentration in class (the teacher moved fast through the lessons) I was lost from the first day...and could not even do the homework because it was based on what we were meant to learn in class that day...it also required a couple of hours homework per evening for just that subject alone....so needless to say I was told I was lazy and demoted back to normal math classes.
    The lack of attention coupled with procrastination meant I was always told I can do better but I need to apply myself....I actually felt lazy and guilty my whole life in school & college....at least I discovered ADHD discussions on CZcams a couple of years ago and realized that these guys were describing me! I know there are coping 'strategies', but honestly I just want to try the drugs to see what it feels like to be able to focus on the information at hand....I've been 'coping' my whole life, but these little strategies don't change the fact that paying attention while Listening to, or reading, material is almost an impossible task for me

You don't meet your tearchers and other students, you have to balance your university life and private life, and you have all these tasks to do on your own! There aren't many places where you can study outside your home, for now, because schools and libraries closed, so it's hard to find a location where you can study... Most cafés are noisy. Actually, a special additional thank you for the "take breaks" line at the beginning. It's a simple thing but Wow, I realised it took out the general guilt I feel when I take an hour to go through a 15mn video with seventy rewinds.
    This is my last semester of undergrad and the first one I start with knowledge and medication for ADHD and the accompanying depression, so this video really comes at the perfect time.
    The simple understanding of adapting to my functioning rather than trying to change it is a life-changing step. And with that come tricks as small as setting a timer when watching youtube (or getting a transparent water bottle because I don't think about drinking if I don't see the water) that seem like nothing, but all these little things together bring sensible improvment.
    I can finally get adjustments at uni, including a student tutor, but I find it rather unusual that I wouldn't need much help from them in understanding the classes: I need them as a body double to help getting started with work - but I guess it's not odd when it's ADHD 😄.
    I really hope I won't fall behind this time, when all the previous times I did I had the exact same will and motivation to do well (a good proof - to teachers, family and mainly myself - that it's not the problem).

    I have fallen into an ADHD vortex on YT. It would explain so much about my life. I was good in school, but as school changed to more self reliant my grades started to drop, I have fallen out of university once! I have already use some coping mechanisms you mention here. My wall is full of notes, so they're always in sight. I get frustrated by clutter and then overwhelmed and then get nothing done. I can barely start assignments, waiting until it comes a problem I can no longer avoid to do. I should graduate this spring but I am really really worried. I know it might be just lack of motivation and a backbone but some things just fit like a key to a lock. I even got a smartwatch with an analogue face so I would understand time better. 20:15 means nothing like that but seeing the watch quarter over eight means more. I'm always late. I have trouble giving feedback to other people, because I keep forgetting where I was going.

    i was doing well during the "online lectures (that were background when i do some dorm chores)/offline practical classes twice a week"

    - treat homework with "get things done attitude"
    - socializing
    - physical exercises (for instance, go by foot instead of public transportation)
    well, the problem is that i returned home
    and some time later everything started crashing, even the exams were treated like casual classes (they're obviously not)

    As a very mature students (58 years) doing a Fine Art Printmaking Degree at Brighton uni, (England), this almost made me weep. I am on a waiting list for diagnosis. I spent the first few weeks last year running around, making phone calls, trying to get pre-emptive support. However it is really thin on the ground. Library; a quiet space but closed during the pandemic. So many distractions at home.
    Menopause and possibly complex PTSD seem to have amplified my propensity for distraction. Without a diagnosis I feel I am mostly regarded by tutors as a neurotic 'woman of a certain age'.
    I try to get organized but am thrown off any routine very easily. It's a nightmare at times. Stress levels through the roof. Lockdowns and limited access to studios and workshops have taken away any basic sense of structure.
    As an long time non-professional artist, working now with found materials when I can, my space is necessarily cluttered, although I do have a side to me which can be obsessively clean and organized, I need an outsider to help me make sense of space, notebooks and time management.
    I am coming to the end of a mentoring program with a slightly older lady but due to Covid-19 it has not been possible for her to visit my home and help me brainstorm as to making my fairly small home into a workable studio/relaxation space. She has been more of a counsellor, where this service is lacking or at least, difficult access.
    Other students, younger than me have also said that contrary to Brighton's inclusive 'blurb', they also wasted a lot of time being pushed from pillar to post, to no avail. I am still muddling through somehow because I love making art and there are some lovely people on the course. Also, never having done an art degree has become a major source of regret for me.... it's been a life of relationship distractions (thankfully two amazing kids fifteen years apart), menial work and ultimately dead end voluntary work (increasingly menial the older I have become).
    This is the only one of Stuart's videos that has left me feeling deeply frustrated rather than comforted... More the fault of the university than the lovely Stu!
    I will give the Pomodoro Technique a try though and I'm sure that lots of people will benefit from the video!
    However, I am very close to my wit's end! Living on the edge of breakdown moreso than ever 😥😥!

    My parents are split up and the parent I lived with I think also had adhd therefore we were both distracted in our world. I found out when I hit adulthood how much this world was messed up. I kept job hopping and not having a job. I also realised how the school system was setup by the rockefellars. I was unaware of alot of things this means I was at a disadvantage with adhd in school, parents and teachers couldn't support, couldn't study while also at home. This means I became and adult and thought what is going on in this world. If u don't work u don't eat its a really struggle because I now know if only I knew I could just be earning a living that's normal.

    The right environment really makes a huge difference. I'm one of the few around me who prefers the lockdown life.
    Don't get me wrong, it would have been a disaster had I to stay in my student dorm alone but I've been very lucky. I can study in a calm home with:
    1) no functioning energy spent on getting ready to go out and public transportation in a noisy city.
    2) external structure from family.
    > especially with sleeping and eating at regular times even when my brain fuel has been spent on a morning lecture and I would usually be too tired to cook (the simple execution energy it requires to stop what I'm doing and start something else, agh!).
    3) an empty office room no one used that is separated from the bedroom.
    > I don't have to sit still on my chair for the remaining of the class and exhaust myself with restraint when I can't listen, and instead can just leave the online lecture and read it on my own when my brain has more energy.
    4) Online classes have: No distraction from other students + more visual lecture slides + our teachers write on a tablet they display during the online class and send us the saved document from it afterwards, so I can simply [[ listen ]] while I keep my hands busy with a doodle or smt.
    It's all a real game-changer for me.

    I can't listen to things with words and struggle with hyper focus and time blindness. Some of the most effective things I have done is going to a coffee shop for a change of scenery as time is slower with people around and when at home (I'm a distance learner) I have started listening to acoustic covers of music which is 1-2 hours long so I know when it's finished that time has passed and it's time for a break.

    When I got diagnosed with inattentive ADHD and started getting treatment, one of the biggest things that helped me, odd as it may be, was the difference between creating a to-do list on your computer and devoting that list to a physical planner. From my perspective, it simply felt more fulfilling to write down the individual tasks for the day that I had to complete, keeping this planner on hand, and crossing them out. This to me feels much more like I DID the task, rather than going to a checklist on a computer and checking the box. Hope this helps!

    It can be hard to reach out to someone for advice or help when you can't think of a way getting help from others will actually help. Especially when you've had negative reinforcements on experiences doing that (Whether you were the one who stepped out first or someone "voluntold" you to do it). For me, it can spark my anxiety and for the rest of the day, I'm trying to avoid any and all social situations period regardless of how important it might be because my mental and emotional state is completely out of wack.

  • @sapnanayak1453
    @sapnanayak1453 Před rokem +1

    A good tip for uni students is: To sit in any random class (preferably not related to yours) that's going on, that has a nice 'study' vibe. By this I mean that even in university not all subject/course classes are the same, some are really serious classes and you want to sit in the corner f such a class. The environment where everyone is serious and no one is on the phone is a great motivator. Make a fun game, usually most classes in university are atleast 1 to 1.5 hours long, try to use the class as a timer instead of staring at the clock in the library or your room. I find classes to be the perfect place to work on essays and other very 'boring' assignments because I can't physically get up and leave the class, I cannot snack on something, be on the phone or plug earphones in my laptop and binge my favourite show, as I will stand out like a sore thumb and likely place myself in the teacher's attention. If you are out of uni, then try going to public libraries, unfortunately with the internet and various devices people don't really go to libraries anymore (you'll see maybe some older people say of say boomers or gen x), I go on purpose without my earphones and put a timeout on my phone's 'addictive' apps. Lastly remember to reward yourself and not try to ride the productivity train, usually going out in nature can be a good reward to do immediately after an intense study/work session alongwith snacking and watching your favourite show afterwards. The going out in nature is key though as (atleast with me) it gives me a sense of break from monotony to just be with my thoughts and enjoy nature (as much as possible) till all the racing thoughts have susided and I'm in a tired relaxed mood.

    I could not keep up with mandatory readings in uni, I bought the books but could not get myself to sit down and actually read the damn books.
    I would manage to read my books by reading my copy whenever I could while listening to an audiobook copy at the same time.
    I would only work at the campus library using silicon earplugs, and would cram in as much work as possible during the early hours of the morning or in the evening. Barely did any work on the weekends, I would use them to unwind.
    I would take my notes on paper during lessons before typing them out and uploading them on google drive, so that I would have read them at least twice.
    Exercising and doing a lot of cardio helped me with brain fog.
