- Excerpt from Elaine May's "A New Leaf" (1971). The idle and spoiled Henry Graham (Matthau) learns from his accountant/lawyer (William Redfield) that he (Graham) is broke. As of June 2011, this masterpiece is still unavailable on DVD and on iTunes and NetFlix.
William Redfield (Mr. Beckett) was my father. It's so great to have this posted. One of my favorite things he did.
Loved him in the Odd Couple TV show.
wow! that's fantastic. your father had some great roles. i haven't seen this film in many years, but remember this scene well. so funny. also, the first thing that came into my head was, floyd!
I have always thought the role could not have been played better by anyone else.
Your dad was a brilliant actor, in this scene and in any number of productions otherwise. He is dearly missed.
@@voxpox1850 Who was he in the Odd Couple?
Wildly underrated flick. Elaine May, you rock!
Classic! 🤣 I remember Larry Elder sharing the audio clip of this scene on his talk show years and years ago, and it was perfect.
This movie is so clever and quotable. Vastly underrated !!
"She's unscrewing my Montrazini !" I only have to think about that line and I giggle like an idiot.
William Redfield was such a great actor.
@Connie Corbett. Thank you. Of course, I agree but I'm prejudiced.
REDFIELD IS SUPERB. IVE BEEN QUOTING THIS SCENE FOR YEARS.💙
@Dolly Dinkle, I agree!
This video should be shown to EVERY HIGH SCHOOL student and economically illiterate legislator in Congress and then after the individuals should be TESTED on whether they understood it or not
Of course they understand! ... Now about this budget. It must be approved. 🤣
I saw this movie in a smalltown theater in New York state back in the early 70s and deem it today, one of the best dark humor movies ever. That setting where Henry walks out of his adviser's office mumbling that "I'm poor " is hilarious ! BTW, the music from that particular ending scene is a work called In a Monastery Garden by Ketelbey and it's quite appropriate for the scene.
He's a great actor. Fantastic scene here.
@2Uahoj, thank you! Of course, I agee.
I miss my father so I’m back to watch this video again. Oh dear Mr Redfield., you never knew that you were playing my father ----- to perfection.
I watch this and it is an almost verbatim conversation that I had with my father starting in high school. He would talk and my eyes were focused on the ceiling. I’m not kidding -- I watch this and I am looking and listening to my father and myself decades ago.
Adam; I hope you check these comments now and again. Your father was a SUPERB actor; I just checked him out as the little schoolboy banker in "Backdoor to Heaven" (1939) and am re-reading his "Letters from an Actor". A wonderful talent all around. IN September, 1961, you father starred in an episode of the short-lived NBC TV series "Great Ghost Tales"-- which unfortunately was filmed live (I believe the LAST live TV show shot in NYC). The episode was entitled "ROOM 13", and it is THE HOLY GRAIL among fantasy-horror fans of that era--- a true CULT item, and fondly remembered by an ever-dwindling number of viewers-- since it aired ONLY that night--Sept 7, 1961.
"ROOM 13" was truly terrifying-- your dad played an archaeologist in Turkey (I believe) who, along with another guy and a girl (Diane vander Vlis), unearthed the Skull of SATAN (!) and had it with them in an old, creepy hotel room at night. During the final, fiery last scene I was so freaked (age 10) that I had to leave the room (my older brother stayed to the end). I've searched high and low, including with some top-known authorities of the genre-- and it's gone without a trace.
I'm sure your father learned the role , rehearsed and shot it quickly, then went on to his next project--which was most likely his very deft and witty performance in Naked City's "The Hot Minerva" with Glynis Johns, which fortunately is available in a very clean commercial DVD.
A very gifted man who absolutely DOMINATES the scene with Walter Matthau (above).
Anyway, I'm imagine you must be struck by how many lives your father's work touched. I hope you will write back.

@HassoBen Soba, WOW, you beat me! I had never even heard of Room 13. I really feel wonderful reading your beautiful comments. And today is Father's Day, no less! Thank you.
Again. It NEVER gets old. 😂
Our favorite scene from one of our favorite movies. My husband does taxes for people and not a day goes by that he doesn't think of this scene. Sometimes he has to actually say, 'You paid no income tax so you probably won't be getting a tax refund."
The point Mr. Graham is you don't have any money !
My most favorite movie of all time 🎉
Mr Beckett is savage.
This and The Ritz are two of my favorite 'unknown' movies to watch at least once a year.
Your father did one of BEST straight men scenes ever...
Thank you Jay. Yes, he played straight off of Matthau wonderfully!
come to the point beckett... :D :D
😂
Love this film
Here I am watching this again. 5:19 - that’s me 😂 after my father cut me off. I walked around in a daze -- ended up getting a job. 😬 Paid my bills. It was almost against my religion -- the half Jewish American Princess that I was. Well -- he didn’t cut me off completely. He ended up helping me again after I admitted the value of a dollar and money doesn’t grow on trees. 👀😇 He loved hearing that -- and I almost believed it myself. 😂 (I still have my AT&T stock) 🙂
-- and now in 2022 my AT &T stock has plummeted. I know exactly what my father is looking down on me from Heaven saying
“I told you to save your money and not spend every penny you have”.
That's right "masterpiece". I have it on VHS & no way to play it anymore. What a shame. I love this movie.
You can find this movie on DVD
I have the DVD and I am absolutely compelled to watch it every few months or so.
Oh -- and my mother use to tell me to quit looking at the ceiling when my father was talking with me about money $$$$ because my eyes were going to get stuck like that. 😂
Damn fine film
This movie is one of the very few 100% films on Rotten Tomatoes.
"im pooor" ahaha
great movie!!!
2:35. What gave you the right to cover my bounced cheque
The Vander Bilts!
Apparently the end was not the one Elaine May wanted. Wonder how it would have ended if she had her way and the studio had not interfered.
This is on Amazon Streaming video!
Well well. Finances 101
I wish there were some I could say it 😂😂😂
on mplex this week...
1:20 come to the point Beckett
*I'M POOR!* Oh how I would just LOOOOVE to hear that coming from the mouths of most U.S. Republican Senators, their lawyers and certain others in American politics that I know!!
You mean most of the do nothing Democrats ?!
@@lilybond6485 Most? You mean ALL! They are $27 TRILLION in the hole, and accelerating...
