David Bowie - Suffragette City - live 1972 (rare footage/2016 edit)

- I put this video together from all the footage I could find of Bowie performing 'Suffragette City' live in 1972. Some of the footage was silent, some had other songs dubbed on to them - so I spent a lot of time lip-reading and matching fragments to the audio track, retiming the footage where necessary to get it in synch. The audio comes from the Santa Monica 1972 show. On that occasion, Bowie forgot some of the lyrics early in the song, so I've re-instated them for this version.
The clips used in this video vary in quality (one source had a watermark which I had to mask out), but I feel I've done the best with what I had access to.
I think the video captures the energy and excitement of seeing Ziggy and the Spiders perform live in 1972. It's been a labour of love to put together.
I hope you like it. - Hudba
I'm 62 and this was happening when I was 12 . Kids at work think I was born in " The old days " Then I look at their grey clothes and worried little faces and ponder whether any of them have ever , or will ever go to a Rock And Roll concert . Probably not .
Poor kids!
Look at this guy..He 's only 24 ... Absolutely genius. Missing u David Bowie 😥😥😥
My friend and I had 6th row left seats for the Carnage Hall show in 1972. He came on stage with an acoustic 12 string and a stool, with an ivory silk shirt, drapey grey flannel pants and long blonde hair, i.e. the cover of Hunky Dory. He was simply mesmerizing, and the audience loved it. (Paul Simon was behind us and Clive Davis and record co. dudes were packed in the front rows.) Intermission, some wine, and back to our seats. I said ' f it' and lit a joint. Glad I did.
Suddenly, out of the pitch blackness, the first chords of this song erupted at volume 11, the lights went on, and there were Ziggy and the Spiders in all their glory. They were beyond amazing. (I knew what to expect as I ran a record shop and had been playing the album for 3 weeks since it came in.) The crowd freaked. No one had seen anything like this before. Then Angie Bowie comes dancing down the aisle with her multi colored hair and an usher herds her back. About a third of the audience departed, the rest of us were dancing our asses off.
Two encores as I recall, and it remains one of the best concerts I've ever seen.
Thank you David for so many wonderful songs and memories.
Thats an awesome story thanks for sharing. I was too young for Ziggy live. Thank God for CZcams! And the movie. And Santa Monica Live '72. And Mick Rock. Lol.
Why didn't you call me;)
Hunky dory David and Ziggy Stardust David in the same concert??? How freaking lucky can you get!
NYC
What a wonderful experience. Wish I'd been there.
WHAM BAM THANK YOU MA'AM!
Man I wish all the bedroom guitar players on CZcams would watch this and start playing like this. Please start playing like this. I know you can shred, but Thousands of other people can shred. Play like this and you are a ROCKSTAR.
All bedroom guitarists can rise🎸
Fuck n A right on , I’ve been trying to since well, very young.
Me I suck but I definitely go this route on guitar raw & hot! Not so much into shredding it’s just scales very fast that I can do , to play like this I’ve been trying for years almost got it so it actually sounds like I know what I’m doing, just watch a lot of 70’s early raw material and do what they do.
Mick Ronson was one the reason Bowie had his breakthrough in 72, the man was a genius and never received the recognition he deserved...and while Bowie went on to make millions Ronson died penniless despite Micks guitar and producing being behind lots of Bowie’s best hits...
YEAH, Bowie abandoned him and the Spiders from Mars like he was discarding a tissue...It is an issue....They should have re-emerged in the 80's in a new revue!
Oh man! Bowie begins to earn a lot of Money with Let’s dance . Before this, even if popularity grows, all the money goes to Mainman production . And don’t forget that even if Ronson was an incredible guitarist and a marvelous arranger , Bowie wrote the songs.
Ronson was amazing. I didn’t know he died penniless that makes me very sad. How can a rock God die penniless? I mean it wasn’t the old days like when the record companies used to cheat the black blues musicians back in the 40s. 🤦🏻♂️
I hate everything bowie did without him. only the albums with MICK RONSON are really great !!
@@lucalone I guess you're a Mick Ronson fan then.
I think we all dreamed of being Ziggy Stardust! To slip into the skin of a wonderful creature that filled our world with mystery and taboo with no boundaries! The grey concrete real world was eclipsed while Ziggy was! Love always, David. X
This song is so punk. love it.
might be the first punk song ever!
outofthegamer depends what you class as punk
True, the "proto-punk" genre is a very fuzzy categorization. The New York Dolls are considered proto-punk, and I see a lot of similarities between early 70's Bowie and the NY Dolls.
outofthegamer theres a song from the 50s. The phantom - lovd me. I class that as a very early punk song
Cool! Thanks for the tip, I'm alway on the lookout for stuff like that!
Mick Ronson was the man
David Bowie too !
1972
Bowie was much of my youth. He can make as many mistakes as he likes. The entertainment value from this guy and band was second to none.
Saw the Ziggy Stardust in '72. I was 16 years old. Awesome I'll never forget it.
that’s so cool!
Same here. I was 16. Saw him in Detroit. I was impressed and went back and saw him the next night. It was a great venue and since he hadn't made it big yet tickets were available for the next night.
Years ago I used to think that he was saying "I'm back on someone conceded". I had never heard of the word "suffragette".
+ One Too : Suffragette city is London UK , and the suffragettes was British women who fought and demonstrated for women's rights in England about 1920/ 1930
I think "Suffragette" in the lyrics here is a code word for "groupie". I knew already when i first heard this song, aged about twelve, who the suffragettes had been, and the lyrics puzzled me a bit because the idea of Ziggy being surrounded by angry, committed women's vote activists didn't seem to fit in... :D
This is such a funny track, and the ultimate glam party rocker!
❤❤❤ There Will NEVER Be Another One As Brilliant As David Bowie ❤❤❤❤.R.I.P Davis Jones Bowie...
That first flush of Ziggyness is still so exciting to watch all these years later!
In my opinion the most important video on youtube!
Agreed
Out of sight. Live to the max.
@@stevec6633 tooche brother.
Oh man, he totally messed up the lyrics in that first verse, lol. These are great vids, it's awesome seeing these boys in their prime.
Bro, I think he fucked up all the choruses slightly too?
@@norbitcleaverhook5040 Yeah, it seems like he never really bothered to learn the lyrics.
Ciao Vecchiook grazie
Same lol
Jake I don’t care if he messes up the words he’s David fuckin’ Bowie
New York in 78 was the coolest place on the Planet.
I remember my brother and sisters listening to Bowie in the early 70 s great memories of my family and the music I grew up with
Yes, amazing! He is part of my growing up too, and his music and lyrics have entwined themselves with the lives and souls of me and my brother. Saw the amazing Bowie retrospective at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 2013. ❤
Great footage of the one and only David Bowie. Love it!
Pure punk rock BEFORE punk rock.
I echo what everyone else has said, and also must say that this is incredible! It's always made me sad that the only passable concert footage of Bowie in the 'Ziggy' years was the concert film from '73-- this '72 footage reveals an entirely different (and dare I say, better) Bowie! Thanks so much for the hard work!
Thanks Luke. I agree entirely. I love DA Pennebaker's film of the final Ziggy concert but by that stage they had perhaps lost some of the rawness that you can hear in the Santa Monica album - and it was in danger of becoming a little overblown. The '72 Ziggy is closer to the one heard on the album imho. Stay tuned as I hope to post more from this era.
yes I agree, better than the 73 film, too many close ups, what we have here is much better
keep them coming, you do a great job. I have many cds and recordings of early shows, pennebaker's film is good because of the subject, the actual filming for me is not great, i want to see the stage and the band, not up Bowie's nose. I still enjoy watching it
Agree ... Mick was ace ... I wish we had never lost any of them ... the Ziggy sound is so hard to copy, I had a go on YT but at least I connected with lots of Bowie Fans.
Absolutely awesome video, thanks so much for putting this together, it really brings the old footage to life.
Takes me back to college days in a small town with nothing to do, no bars or anywhere else to go and this was our absolute favorite album. We'd gather - 50+ of us - at someone's house, put Ziggy on and grab whatever could be a musical instrument - brooms made great guitars and we took turns being in the band. The other favorite album was Edgar Winter They Only Come Out At Night. Ahhh memories ❤️
i love davidbowie❤❤❤❤
My goodness
Questi bellissimi video mi riportano indietro nel tempo....grandissimo Bowie
Man I love that guitar playing man he is just f****** going.
truth
Mick Ronson makes his guitar roar. I love it
Very earthy, growling sound - it's like it's coming from the ground, with the stage floor as a huge resonator box
What an awesome band!
Thank you man for puting this video online.....
The band were super tight, that's for sure. Nice to see Mike Garson in the background near the end. Great vid. Thanks for posting.
I am true Bowie fan but I have never seen this video - just great!!
Totally Agree ... love Bowie and have been inspired to record his masterpieces as a One Man Band on my YT Channel ... Bowie Fans are great and have asked me to do my Interpretation of Heroes for Ukraine ... apologies for changing the vocal lines somewhat ... thanks again to the Bowie Fans for the privilege to share.

Truly masterful editing, as others have pointed out, you've reinvigorated the old footage in such a profound way. Thank you.
Thanks George. I hope to reinvigorate some more seventies Ziggy era footage soon.
Great fucking footage!
Excellent work to put the video-snipplets together. I like it!
Man this should have 1 million views! thanks for your dedication and time you've spent making this, you've made a young and new bowie fan very happy!
Thanks! That's great to hear.
You've made an old(ish) longtime Bowie fan terribly happy too! Thank you again.
I really want to see more footage from that era, but I think it is almost imposible, I've been searching for a long long time :( greetings from Argentina, we really love bowie here!
+Isolar99 make sure you are subscribed to this channel because I will be posting more rare footage from 72...
Omg great news! Yes of course, I am subscribed since this video came out (came from Nacho Video channel) and I'm so glad I did it

Thank you for such a great video!
Omg. What a true rocker!
I was skeptical before clicking on this, but this lives up to the power and heaviness of the studio track. Damn good job.
WOW the edit makes this flow, seamless, alive - thanks so much for doing this! 💕
That's the kind of guitar playing I'm talking about. Raw and in your face. Even sounds like the Marshall was about ready to blow up when he was doing the solo. How cool is that!!! Second thought I think maybe a couple speakers went on that. Doesn't matter SOUNDS KOOL!!!
David is number *1* -1972 was a very groovy year for Bowie Music never forgotten and still the Best!
Wow ty for post I remember Mr Bowie from 70s a girl I knew was crazy about him wam bam ty maam love his outfit and shoes
Wow outstanding!! These are making me so happy, thank you so much!
You go Ziggy!! Thanks for all the great music through those golden years. Reminiscing about all the great talent we lost in 2016...
Awesome footage....this was always my favorite Bowie rocker...I saw the Ziggy tour at the Tower Theatre in Philly February 19th 1973....have the ticket stub in my scrapbook and look at it on occasion to remind me how lucky I was.
LOVE!!!! Thanks for all your hard work! Thoroughly enjoyed...
The thin white duke. Dead today 5 years ago. I love him & miss him.

Amazing reconstruction work! Thanks for bringing this to us!
Great effort Mr Sussex ... you are creating masterpieces of memory here on YT. More and more YT is becoming a time machine.
bravo on the footage!!! Im crying
amazing!!!
Thank you for all your work. It was great to see Bowie performing in 1972. A historical document.
7 years today since this wonderful artist left us. Thank you Mister Sussex for putting this great and rare footage together.
Remember the late great Mick Ronson the man who played a large part in Bowie's success. Gone but not forgotten
One of the best live versions of this song. Thanks for posting! ⚡️
Thank you for putting this together, the work you have done.
Wow what a brilliant job you have done putting this together, great, great, great, love Bowie and love your SG.
It's rock. It's exuberance. The folky-mod-chameleon morphed into a rock god, thanks to a musical virtuoso, Mick Ronson. He cut out of that glam scene for his own reasons, but most probably it was because he saw himself as typecast and couldn't accept that limitation or mold. The band with wives and kids at home was devastated that the tour was finally cancelled! (In the end, it's just show biz!) Anyway, thanks for piecing all this together!
This has just now been brought to my attention. Thank you so very much for this rarity.
One of the best bands ever in 1972 and beyond. Thanks for all of your time-consuming and difficult work on this video. Incredible to see and take in with one's heart.
I saw David Bowie during the Scary Monsters Tour. This stuff is the original Bowie. Love it!

Thank you sincerely for all the work putting this together! Bowie was brilliant. Still processing that he is no longer here. Amazing video, this.
This is absolutely amazing! I can hardly believe I've just now stumbled on it after all of the Bowie searches I've done. Worth the wait. Thank you

You did a heckuva fine job: 10 out of 10! Thanks!!
Pretty tight for a small outfit...I think this is some of Bowie's best work live - less pageantry, more razor-sharp riffing from a basic outfit. Real rock'n'roll
This video is gold. Thank you!! ⚡️
thank you for your awesome reconstruction work.
Love this!!! Love finding vintage Bowie vids!!
Great work! Thanks for sharing this!
Oh Memories ! Oh Wham Ban Thank You Man
Terrific video, captures Bowie at his rockin' best.. Big Bowie fan, and this is probably my fave song of his. The band is soooo tight. This is rock n' roll!! Bowie's creativity was a rarity in rock music!

Thank you! Once in awhile...exploring your musical memories, you run across a gem like this! I appreciate your effort in piecing this together.
Jour the best for ever and ever, jour my hero all of my days ♥️😎🐞
One of the huge gaps in the history of rock ... how could there be so little clean footage of the Ziggy tour? I also lament the sparseness of Mick Ralphs era Mott the Hoople video.
Absolutely Divine. 💯 Bravo on your great composite. 👏
Love all this footage I’ve not seen before. Thanks for posting.
Super tune from David Bowie,Rest In Peace Man😎
Watching these bring tears to my eyes, but in a bitter-sweet way
