A teenage girl who collapses every time she LAUGHS due to a rare brain condition has to avoid her funny friends.
Student Billie Hodgson, 17, suffers from cataplexy meaning that any strong emotion, particularly laughter, causes her to pass out.
Billie, who is currently studying at sixth form, is forced to steer clear of certain joker friends to avoid collapsing when she sees them.
The teenager, from Sheffield, said: “I’m a bubbly person so to go from that to feeling like I can’t laugh is really strange. I feel like I can’t be me.

I dont have this condition. I was searching because I laugh to the point where I almost pass out and was looking for an explanation. The nervous system is so fascinating

I never knew there was a name for what was happening to me whenever I laugh extremely hard at something. It doesn't happen often but when it does happen it's really like euphoric. It's like an insane high

Some of these comments are weird. (I have N1). Weight has nothing to do with cataplexy. Do your research and if you think you are having symptoms talk to your PCP not people online especially people who do NOT experience it.

Cataplexy -I believe is your brain over firing , it then causes a shut down of most of your facultues. I had terrible symtoms years ago,but then I went on Cymbalta , and this kept my brain functioning on an even keel. I would say if you do try cymbalta that you have no alcohol, or to much coffee. A little is fine. but too much will be like you went off your meds.

I have this, horrible when I feel myself just spacing out and not being able to say something. I also have a problem when looking over my shoulder that causes syncope, tension in the back of my neck regularly and have irregular heartbeats. Always wondered if it's all linked together, doctors never seem too bothered about putting it all together and just tell me to change my diet.

I have it too. I think it started when I put on a lot of weight. Possibly a blood pressure thing.

I've recently had two episodes of this as well. Never had this before and I am well into middle age. Doctor said that strong laughter can put pressure on a nerve that runs along the stomach. That pressure can cause a black out. Yeah, I've put on more than my share of COVID weight. She said getting weight under control may help. Otherwise, so far, tests show strong as ox. In the meantime, backing off coffee intake, going to zero alcohol, and tilting diet more towards vegetarian / keto inspired foods.
