Baby steps. I started less than two years ago on inlines. What I do is work on a couple of different skills per session - ones that are close to my ability level at the time. As I get decent at them, I add something new to the mix that is once again close to my ability level. As you skate more, you get better, too - better balance, muscle memorization and so on. It becomes second-nature the more you skate / practice. = )

Also, like... what helped me was understanding that the braking action comes from resistance of the skate wheels being forced forward and sideways at the same time. So if I just sit after getting low & booty bump, and my heels don't try to push out then I'm gonna keep rolling without resistance.

Hi Dirty, just started quad skating about 4 days ago! I come from an inline street skating background. Love how you explain the plow stop, going down stairs and across sand. Your techniques are similar to what I've already done on my inlines. I'm doing what I can to pick up quad techniques ASAP, because I've been unofficially tasked with teaching the neighbors' kids to quad skate. (That's why I bought a pair - hard to explain how to use toe stops without having them. ; )
So far, I love how it's so much easier to duck walk (do a front-back manual) and skate sideways! Okay, so I fall on my butt more on my quads b/c of the shorter front-back wheel base - I'm still sloppy on front-back balance b/c I've been lazy on my inlines - but I'm looking forward to my quads helping me fix this. Between them and my current inlines, they should do a decent job prepping me for my wish list skate: a short-framed trick inline.
I like how the carving feels nice and smooth in my quads. Admittedly, crossovers in particular feel kinda weird. Definitely a different sensation. Glad to be adding the quad experience to the mix. = )
BTW, I'm wearing a pair of Sure-Grip Fames. I will admit, though, that I kinda wish I had gone w/ a pair w/ Velcro at the top, or a softer boot. They're comfy at the bottom; but honestly, the laces sometimes come undone (changed out the stock ones for waxed derby laces), and I'm getting a bit of cuff bite. My Rollerblade Macroblade 80ws actually have a softer boot, believe it or not. And, uh, are quads pretty heavy? Mine I think weigh more than 8 lbs. Is that normal? Anyway, thanks for the tips! Indy makes quad skating fun; Estro Jen makes quad skating fashionable; but you teach us a lot of the techniques we need to get the most out of our skates. Thanks! = D

Hello Deborah! Thank you for the thorough explanation. What wheels would you recommend for practicing the plow stops outdoors on concrete or asphalt? I am having trouble with traction and creating that "screeching" noise on my outdoor wheels. For reference I am skating on the Suregrip Broadwalk skates with the stock outdoor wheels.

    • @Dirtydeborahharry
      @Dirtydeborahharry  Před 4 lety +1

You will not be able to make that screeching sound outdoors. Indoors yes! It comes from the interaction of the compound covering the flooring vs. your indoor wheels. If you want a harder feel with more response outdoors (note you will have less comfort) go for a harder wheel than the standard 78a outdoor wheels. Maybe go to a 85a. SureGrip Equalizer is a good choice.

Are there ways for immediate stops like the power stop on inliners? Nobody seems to do them on quads

the problem is when the street is running downwards, than it´s more difficult to plow, when you get to fast...

When going downhill, the best way to control speed and ultimately stop, is to go backward. I will cover that technique in an upcoming video.

Transitions are my nemesis atm. I just can't get my hips to cooperate with the open/close door method so I am trying to learn the pivot stop method. Hope you cover both methods.

I've been watching a bunch of different videos on ways to stop and have seen one called a hockey stop but I can't seem to find a video where you're teaching it. Is it something you would or would not recommend?
    Thanks 😊

I got a question about going down stairs, how do you go down stairs that are on a deck/ porch that have no back to them for you to jam your toe in to keep you from falling?

Aghhh having such a hard time stopping as I skate
I just got my skates and am practicing outside. Usually just crash into my car because of the speed. How do you stop whine going pretty fast? Plow and te stops don’t help and i usually skid during a t stop

Hello Deborah, I'm very new to this and while i feel quite in control indoors, what I found a bit scary outdoors is being on a street that has even the slightest inclination. I think I won't be able to stop with my feet and just look out for a tree or light post to help me stop.
What kind of stop do you recommend for those cases?
ps. thanks for your videos, the way you explain every detail makes everything seems possible!

Find a contained place to practice outdoors first. It is important that you feel safe skating and simultaneously get used to the sights, sounds and feel of outdoors. Please watch my outdoor skating playlist. I touch on this subject in depth.

Hello from down under! What exercises would you recommend to build the right muscles for skating? I just started skating a month ago and when I go to the rink and practice different basic stuff I feel lacking in strength. My legs reach a point when they don't want to do what I want. Great work with your videos. I'm not an expert but I think that your tutorials are just excellent. Thumbs up for you!
