- This was a highly entertaining movie. The direction by Ron Underwood was decent, the acting was solid and the actual Graboids were rather convincingly made. The music and humor of the film were on point. Like I said before, I wouldn’t call this film a straight up horror. It was a comedy thriller in my books. If the sequels are worth watching, do let me know!

Hey Guys! Apologies for not replying to comments. I'm way behind with my schedule and I'm spending the weekend watching/reviewing films (including The Two Towers) and catching up with my Patreon. To help with your schedule, there are no sequels to this. Trust me. The franchise falls on it's face after the first film faster than the flight of the final graboid.

Reba McEntire's (pronounced REE-bah) performance was even more impressive when you consider this was her 1st time acting. She was a very famous and successful country singer at the time. Seeing her in this role at the time was kind of a funny surprise, helping with the comedic atmosphere of the film.
As was Micheal Gross as Burt -- Such a change from his then signature role on Family Ties.

Can we take a second to appreciate the near-seamless switches between numerous takes of full-size, miniatures, and rear-screen projection that takes place at Burt’s house
this is a fun hokey movie, but in terms of effects it's honestly a masterpiece. mind-blowing especially considering it's over 30 years old and had a modest budget.
the only flaw with that scene was when we saw a badly CGIed in Burt shooting at the graboid hand puppet apart from that one flub that was a visual masterpiece of a scene with such seamless transitions between the miniture set and the full sized set if you ignore that one bad CGI effect with Burt shooting the graboid and we get a rear camera shot in that scene giving us that bad CGI effect
I appreciate that the survivalist character actually demonstrates gun saftey, checkig the gun after it's been handed to him to make sure it's not loaded, even though he knows it's not, like your supposed to. It's little things/quirk's like that which really add's to a character's personality.

Most of the people i know that would be considered by the media to be “gun nuts” are actually very smart people who take their and other people’s safety very seriously when it comes to guns. If they saw you being an idiot or just being uneducated with guns, they would put you in your place fairly quick or at least work to educate you. It’s only people who don’t know what they’re doing who don’t seem to take it seriously or know how to handle weapons in a safe manner.
@@elzar760 It's a very complicated issue, since there's plenty of evidence for and against guns.
Many owner are responsible and careful, but many are also careless and they tend to do a lot of damage.
Those with guns can de-escalate violent encounter's, but it's also true that many gangs can ahold of them.
Then there's the whole, "Right to bare arms" thing and how relevant that is with today's classes of weaponry, when the original text was written for the ease of creating a colonial period militia, and the most deadly firearms around where muskets and cannonballs.
@@Avenger85438 Yes, the British troops were limited to smoothbore " Brown Bess " muskets. Many in the militia and others in the Revolution carried Pennsylvania & Kentucky rifles. A superior firearm, along with the other arms such as knives, short swords, swords. " The right to bear arms thing " was to aid the sovereign States to keep the Federal government in Washington D.C. in line. It still is.
Some consider this a perfect movie. The acting, editing, pacing, cinematography etc is so damn good. It's one of my all time favorites so I'm a little biased.

@@tsogobauggi8721 The scene of Val hammering the brad to hold the strand of barb wire to the top of the fence post kills me every time. It reminds me of my first day of work at being a carpenter. So, this movie had me laughing from the beginning.
my dad put it that the guy that dies 10 minutes in the film has more personality then main chars in most horror.
I totally agree, it's a brilliant script and everything clicks into place, and lets not forget the score! Shan says the cinematography and editing is average and simple but I DISAGREE, these things are critical to creating suspense and this film has it by the bucketload. I bet over time, Shan will change his mind and appreciate the shot work more.
I love this movie but IMHO “perfect” is a few steps too far.
I didn't think Rhonda was a weak character at all. She keeps her head and solves probably more problems than anyone else - if anything, she's one of the strongest because of the way she takes action whenever they're in trouble. She doesn't have so many lines as Val and Earl, but that's because the film is from their viewpoint and their friendship is almost a closed system.
Yeah, she understood what was happening, how the creatures work, she was intortant. :)

She was spunky so she had an irritating energy but she was NOT a weak character by any means.
Wish she had returned in the sequels.
The problem with Rhonda is that she's effectively a straight man to Val and Earl's manic energy.
Of all the films that came out of the 90's creature feature boom, this is my favorite.
Love the chemistry between Val & Earl.

Love this movie!!! Its a fun Sci-fi Comedy Action Horror film! The idea for the movie came from Brent Maddock and SS Wilson, whom were in the Navy. They were taking notes while sitting on a boulder in a Nevada Test Site and one of them said, "What if there was something under the ground that would never let us off this rock?" And thus Tremors was born.
Everything about this film is great and it's infinitely rewatchable. I've seen Tremors countless of times since its release.

Yup. David Lynch's signature surrealist style shines through the original film adaptation, but if you want a fuller story with better pacing to accommodate such a large scale story, I recommend the 2000 Sci-Fi mini series, followed by the sequel Children of Dune mini series.
@@barretxiii27 I wasn't impressed by the Sci-Fi Channel's version. It doesn't hold a candle to David Lynch's version.
I love Lynch, but unfortunately consider his movie a bit of a mess. No doubt any movie with Lynch as a director is going to have some redeeming qualities, but it's just not enough to make me enjoy his version. I have NOT seen the extended version. Perhaps that could change my mind? I also was not impressed with the Sci-Fi miniseries, so, for me....in Villeneuve we trust. (crossing fingers)
@@clash5j You have to hunt a bit to find it. I just checked my DVD, and it's called Dune Extended Edition on the cover. That's the one you want. If you didn't like the Lynch version, this won't change your mind, but if you did, you want this version. Think of it like it like Aliens Special Edition.

I love this movie. It's hard to believe that it spawned five sequels and a short lived television series. Not bad for a low budget horror/comedy.
It reminds me of a lot of sci-fi "giant monster" movies of the 1950's, like Them, or It Came From Beneath the Sea.
When I watched it with my family for the first time, they all said that Burt Gummer reminded them of me.
The sequels are pretty good, especially the second and third installments in the seies.
Numbers four and give deal with graboids turning up in other locations.

This is one of my all time favorite movies from when i was a kid. Love it, seen it a million times.
Before i start watching i just want to point out the massive foreshadowing in that first scene where he yells "stampede". I'm guessing you will notice that, it's kind of obvious. But, it's more than that. Look at Earl's (if thats his name) sleeping bag and compare it to the final shot of the monster after it splatted on the rocks. It even has those red splits/gashes. I always loved how much is in that first scene and how well everything is set up in this movie. Hope you enjoy it.
Michael Gross played the father on the 80s tv series Family Ties starring Michael J Fox.

Yes!!! I haven't even watched this yet but knew it would be great. When I was a kid I watched this movie so much that I almost wore out the VHS tape!! (The DVD came out just in time) P.S. I'm a Nevadan, so this has a special place in my heart 😁😁😁

This movie is so likable. A rare film. There are no bad or dull parts, it's just flows so good the whole way through. It doesn't matter how many times you see this movie, it's still always fun time wathing it. :)

Fred Ward and Kevin Bacon had such great chemistry in this movie, you really believed they spent all their time together.
This is my second favorite Fred Ward part, the first being Remo Williams in Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins.
The working title was “Beneath Perfection” and I have a crew jacket with that embroidered on the back.

Shan, Dune was made by David Lynch. Any film by Lynch is going to have some redeeming qualities and the film does have some fans, but imo (and many others) it's a bit of a mess. Dune is a VERY dense book and so far has proven to be impossible to get right in Lynch's version or the made for TV version. I had read the book long before seeing Lynch's movie and still had trouble following the plot. Fans of the book are crossing our fingers that Villeneuve can finally produce a quality version of this science fiction classic. He's certainly a great director
A mini series does have greater potential for presenting Dune well. There is just too much content to fit in a reasonable length movie.
I suggest "Critters" from 1986 !
The people suggesting these movies are 100% on point - every time I see a new vid pop it's always another favourite. Tremors is a real guilty pleasure of mine, from the first 'stampede' right to the end it's just a simple good time and so well paced.

Tremors! One of my favourite movies. It's well written, funny, I like the characters and acting, and the creatures were scary when I was young first time watching this. And for a while they made me feel the same on land as Jaws did with the sea. :)

My BFF and I quote this movie all the time. We even used to jokingly call each other Val and Earl. Filmmakers go on and on about romantic chemistry, but buddy chemistry is equally important, if you ask me.
Another great Fred Ward film is Cast A Deadly Spell, great Lovecraftian Noir
Fun fact is that Reba McEntire who is a famous country musician also stars in this movie and her son is a professional race car driver who I've met. I can't say I recommend the sequels but they're not bad but this movie is an absolute gym and my early teen self enjoyed the hell out of it.

Shan, your commentary continues to be on point. Since you're one to watch films that other reactors haven't touched yet, I STRONGLY recommend the forgotten cyberpunk classic Strange Days by Kathryn Bigelow!
Basically the tremors movies are like having a new food for the first time. Some enjoy the taste and thus decide to explore the many variations on that food while others dislike it and thus choose not to check it out. Honestly tremors unto itself has become its own solid brand with several movies and even a tv series. If you really liked the first movie then the later ones will be some what entertaining but if the first is not your cup of tea then you may not be so keen on seeing the sequels.
It's one of those films you go in with low expectations and are pleasantly surprised. You don't need a big budget to make a good, entertaining movie. The film costs $11 million to make and grossed $16.7 million at the box office. It tripled its original box-office gross with VHS sales and rentals. It had a rotten release in mid January. Clearly, this would have made a fun summer movie.

This is probably the most perfect B-movie ever filmed. The script is tight as can be, the acting is great, the monsters are INCREDIBLY well done (seriously, they 100% hold up even today), the pacing is perfect...I can't think of a serious criticism.
You should react to 'Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins'. It's starring Fred Ward who is in 'Tremors' as Kevin Bacon's partner.
You won't be disappointed.

Remo Williams is based a series of over 100 novels started by William Sapir and Warren Murphy starting with the third book there is a lot of humor that improves them.
Filmed in one of my favorite places, the Owens Valley of California :) specifically outside of Lone Pine.
Many films have been made there from the 20's to the present.
Owens Valley in California has the towns and the rocks that was "Perfection" in the movie. The Alabama Hills is where you find the rocks and the town of Lone Pine was where they were based out of but "Perfection" was built from scratch for the shoot. It's a beautiful drive if anyone's ever interested in going. There's a lot of small towns up and down that road plus the national forests around there. Remember to take lots of water and a light jacket because it gets cold during summer nights.
The graboids were animatronics that caused a lot of issues because sand kept getting in the components since they were underground frequently, causing issues and delays because of their gears needing to be cleaned between scenes, especially if they had to reshoot a scene.
Glad to see you reviewing, Tremors. Not exactly a cinematic masterpiece but always a fun watch. This is the type of movie that never gets made anymore. Today they would put all their money and energy into the cgi and ignore the human interplay. This movie's appeal is primarily it's human characters and how they play off one another. Not the Graboids. Although, they are competently done as well. I hope producers/directors in Hollywood rediscover this simple truth and get back to story telling that isn't totally effects driven.

I'm glad to see you had fun with the movie. Tremors is my favorite horror series! Despite all the killing, they're all definitely feel good movies. The point is to never take them too seriously because they're cheesy monster flicks and that's all they set out to be. and I'm so glad to see that you understand that about them and enjoyed this movie for what it set out to do. I highly suggest watching the rest of the series. You get to see both the monsters and the characters grow and it's always a fun ride full of fun jokes and quotes. you'll have a blast. ^^

Absolutely one of the best humor/monster movies ever. A great balance of laughs and thrills. I like the fact that they never bother with the backstory on the creatures. For another comedy/sci-fi film you should watch Galaxy Quest.

You have to be a major fan of the franchise to make it through all the sequels. I did enjoy Tremors 4: The Legend Begins. It's a prequel set in the old west with many titillating call-forwards to the contemporary episodes. Best. Leo.

The one thing that always stood out to me with this one is that there is no idiot ball. It is a monster movie with every character is either actually smart, or at least not stupid.
I can’t see Fred Ward without thinking of The Right Stuff (1983).

Haven’t checked your playlist yet, but now I’m going to be looking for Tremors 2! A must watch.
Answers:
- The graboids were both animatronic and puppets. It's not one or the other.
- The music is weird because there's 2 composers. Ernest Troost did the country-sounding score originally, but the suits at Universal didn't care for it so they hired Robert Folk to come in and add additional score. His music is the more traditional orchestral, but he went uncredited, likely because the prints for the first reel were already made and it would be costly to re-title them.
- DUNE is a tricky one. The problem is that the new version is just 1/2 of the first book. We don't know when we're going to get the 2nd part. So while I'd recommend waiting to see the new version, I can't justify waiting until it's completely done. So my suggestion is you wait and see the new version, then go watch the original. The original will kind of give away the ending, but not in a way that would be bad, per se. The problem with the original is that it's not that good overall because of the technical limitations of filmmaking and the disparities between David Lynch and the DeLorentis producing clan.
There's also the 2000 SyFy miniseries which is actually quite excellent despite the questionable photography and production design. But the miniseries fixed most of the narrative problems with the 1984 original.
Bert and his wife are doomsday preppers. That's why they're so armed and prepared. The gun his was using shot 500 Nitro Express. It's made for hunting massive African Game like Elephants.

I grew up watching this movie on The Navajo Nation.
You should check out the making of the movie and how they did the practical effects. This is one of my all time favorite movies. I could watch it anytime, any place, anywhere. So happy I got to watch this for the first time in the theatre as a kid💕💕💕
I rented this movie when it first hit the video stores on VHS and became an apostle. It was really hard to recommend it to people though because they'd ask what it was about and I'd have to say, "OK, the heroes are two idiots and there's these huge worms under the ground that eat people and...LOOK JUST WATCH IT!"

With Kevin Bacon, a definitly MUST WATCH (reaction&review or not) is the movie Death Sentence.
Death Sentence (2007), 2nd yes vote. There is one of those long scene action sequence, 2-3 minutes without a cut in a car parking garage to look out for.
What a cool movie. Verry underrated.
On Dune: There is the old movie, which is a classic, but there is also the mini series that was made later, that is also pretty good. I think I would go with the old one. I would watch it to have some comparison base unless you want to read through the book(s).
I've watched this movie so many times. I love it. Part 2 is fun and I personally enjoy the Assblasters in part 3 lol
Hey, Shan! This movie is a blast! I saw it in theaters as a teenager. I always assumed the nuclear testing in the southwest mutated some worm although one of the 6 or 7 sequels might provide a definitive answer to their origin.
Survivalist Burt Gummer, played by Michael Gross, becomes the lead character in many, if not all, of the sequels. The role was a departure for him because he was primarily known as the milquetoast dad on the sitcom "Family Ties" that made Michael J. Fox a star.
Some of the sequels are highly entertaining. The secret sauce to the series are the practical effects which provide enough realism to feel threatening and cut through the comedy. Some CGI may be employed down the line but there's ALWAYS a puppet. I saw a boxed set that collected 5 of the movies together as a bundle!
The survivalist Burt Gummer is the only character to be in all the Tremors films and the spin off TV series. He ends up being the true protagonist of the series.
And for Dune I'd recommend the TV mini series over the David Lynch film if you want to understand the story better as the movie is well a David Lynch film with all that implies. Spectacular but confusing and incoherent in places and by necessity has to leave out a lot of vitally important parts of the book.
It may be hard to imagine but prior to around 1988 almost nobody had a cell phone. When you left the house you were "off the grid" lol. The amazing part, compared to today, is no one gave it a second thought when leaving on a car trip.

I like how I all the sequels, everybody in this movie reprised their roles. Even Mindy, who was played by Arianna Richards form Jurassic Park. It was was cool to see her character all grown up and still living in Perfection in the 3rd movie.

So Happy you enjoyed this hit classic! A Brilliant take on what a good monster movie should be. Not drowned in cheap CGI and the Practical effects were excellent. Just wait till you see Tremors 2 Aftershocks.
I loved this movie! The sequels are fun, and there is also a short lived tv series. 4 and 5 are my favorites. Burt becomes the main character from the second one onwards. There was a decade long pause between movies 4 and 5, so it's interesting to see how filmmaking changed during that time.
There's a video of the making of this film here on CZcams that came out on the 20th anniversary. It's a very good look behind the scenes and includes interviews with the director,actors & stuntmen.
Horror, comedy, not sure about that but it's a classic Buddy film where the relationship between the main characters resonates with the audience as much as the monsters.

This movie is the only one that I know that uses the song "Drop kick me Jesus (through the goal posts of life)" by Bobby Dare, in the sound track. That has got to be worth bonus points.
I love this movie series, I am biased towards the use of location, since I'm from the Southwest. I like the fact that the townspeople are fairly practically minded in general, and that the crazy prepared expert didn't die to horror movie tropes and was in fact a direct defiance to it. Burt is some of my family's favorite character in film.
Lynch's Dune is awesome. Ignore ppl saying it's isn't enough like the book, it's meaningless. His direction & visual sensibilities make it something far more interesting.
The first movie that I saw starring Fred Ward was called Remo Williams. I thought that I was going to be disappointed with that movie, but, it was quite entertaining. Definitely a recommended watch.

I think you'd love the next Tremors movie with Burt. The first 3 movies and prequel I liked, after that they just got dumb and were clearly being milked to the last drop. Burt was my brother's absolute favorite character ever as a kid and my dad loved him too. I gotta admit, he was pretty funny. lol
Kevin Bacon was experiencing a depression of sorts, a personal low when he was filming this movie. As a result he did not care to be associated with it. It wasn't until many many years later that it struck him how much people loved this movie. The most impressive acting came from Michael Gross. Gross, a rabid anti-gunner, played the character of Burt Gummer with amazing respect. Going so far as to learn about the guns Burt would be using and to insist on using proper gun handling techniques for the movie. He is still an anti-gunner but "Burt" will forever be a hero in the 2A community.
