Some tips:
1: Hold accelerate right after 2 on the countdown to get a speed boost at the beginning.
2: the little *hop* you can do is actually the drift button. Hold that around corners and you’ll get speed boosts.
3: Either shake the controller or tap the drift button when going off ramps to get a speed boost.
4: you can throw items forward or backward by what direction you have the joystick in, and hold them behind you by holding the item button.
5: in the video you have both auto-accelerate and smart steering turned on. They make your kart go forward automatically, and prevent you from falling off the track. I’d suggest turning them off, as it makes the gameplay a lot better, even though it’s harder.

If you tap R as you go over a jump you will indeed get a speed boost.
Hold down and hit L to throw an item backwards, or up and L to throw a banana forwards.
Hold L to trail an item behind you, which provides a shield from incoming red and green shells.
Lastly, disable auto-steer 😂
Splendid tips! I used these tricks in Mario Kart Wii, and they translate well in MK8 Deluxe!

There’s also the booster course pass with 48 additional tracks. You really should play on it channel as well. Also here’s some tips: To boost at the start you hold A at the 2 at the start, on ramps press R to do a trick and give you a speed boost, the coins allow you to unlock more car parts, to drift you hold R and joystick to turn, and the items that can dodge a blue shell are super horn, Mushroom, Boo, golden mushroom, super star and bullet bills.

Those “zappy things” at Sunshine Airport are actually good: they give you a little speed boost on anti-gravity sections. They appear in other courses, too.

Yesss, at long last! I am so excited to see what you think of these modern courses. I was quite surprised to hear that MKDD was the last Mario Kart game you played, so I think you'll be excited to see some of the retro courses they've got in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Also, you were right in that the characters and parts all have different stats! You can see the exact stats in the vehicle customization menu via pressing + or -.
Tip about the horn you were holding: it's called the super horn, and it can stop most items from hitting you, including the blue shell (one of the best items in the game)
Also, there's something called lucky 8, which is a variety of items, though it is rare (I'll let you see what items it has).

To boost at the start, you have to press the accelerate button a little after Lakitu counts to “2”. (Not too early and not late, though)
Also, I guess I should give some tips as I watch: firstly, you have the “Smart Steering” turned on (notice the small antenna on your kart?), which keeps you from going off-track, and “Auto-Accelerate”, which are both mostly for beginners. You can turn it off if you want more of a challenge, though. Also, that “hop” you did is actually drifting. If you use that and hold the button down while turning, you’ll drift and sparks will appear, and it gives you a speed boost once you release depending on how long you drift for.
So, yeah, the Smart-Steering is probably why you weren’t able to go on the split path at Thwomp Ruins.

Fantastic video!!! I've always want to see ZXMany playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and it's such an EXCELLENT game.
Heres some tips:
Coins - Coins have 2 significant roles. The first role is to obtain more items to race with (karts/bikes, wheels, gliders).
The second role is to increase ur speed during the race. You can get a maximum of 10 coins each race. As you gain coins your top speed increases. So someone with 0 coins is significantly slower than someone with 10 coins. Get as many coins as you can!

Not gonna lie, seeing a perspective from a noob is kinda nice to see, I used to play 50cc a lot in the original version since the only other game I had played was DS .
Here's some help though:
- At the start, when the number 2 appears, hold A for a startup boost. In Double Dash however, you can mash A as soon as the number 3 shows.
- Use R or ZR to drift, or to trick off ramps
- Use L or ZL to use items, or if you don't have any, it'll beep a horn
- You can hold items behind you in 8, I assume you wasn't doing that since Double Dash doesn't allow you to do that
- The automatic steering mode you mentioned is called smart steering and you have it enabled right now, generally used to make the game easier. I know some comments tell you to turn off auto accelerate, but I'd keep it on if I was you, it's good if your hand needs a rest from holding A.

There's also a DLC pack in this Mario Kart 8 game. It's called Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass. It has 6 waves with 2 cups each. That's 48 more courses. It also has a new Rainbow Road track, and Mario Kart Tour (On the Iphone) tracks. I really hope you'll buy it.

Also you need to hold 'A' just after the countdown gets to 2 for a boost.
And coins increases you top speed slightly (max 10 coins), and if you fall off, Lakitu will place you back faster (for a fee!)

Heres some tips:
DRIFTING/Mini Turbo - Use the R button while turning in a direction to start a drift. When holding the drift you can obtain mini turbos which last longer the longer you hold the drift (blue mini turbo is the shortest, orange is medium, and purple is the longest)

Tip: you can point your glider/kite up and down with the joystick.
When getting a coin, keep it. You never get a second coin from an item box when you already have one. So you will be guaranteed to get a better item.

I saw someone giving you some tips and they actually forgot this since you kept trying to throw green shells at red shells plus there is now a way to get rid of blue shells
1. You hold the L button to use green shells, bananas, or any item as a shield to protect you from red shells. Letting go releases the item
2. Idk if there's other ways to get rid of blue shells, but there's an item, the speaker. Once it's right above you, that's when you should use it
3. When you're gliding, moving the left joystick down means you can glide longer so you can get the shortcuts while gliding that way too
4. If you press - or + in the vehicle customization, you can view the stats of each customization so you're not just guessing

You can also use the items to block shells. What I mean by this is if you have an item that is solid, like a shell or a banana, you can press and hold L or ZL to make the item go behind you. So when someone tries to hit you, the item will block the shell from behind
I remember when Mario Kart 8 was really popular back in 2014 but I never got the game until 2015 in December because we didn't have the money for it for some reason, or maybe because we spent our money on a trip to Hawaii's Maui island that year.
When you press the plus button when you are making your combo you can see the stats. PS. You want more acceleration than speed but you want good speed

Btw when ur trying to pick out ur cart before the race, press plus or minus: it shows all the stats of your cart. Also, characters do affect the carts speed.
You can also press the drift button when you go off of ramps to do tricks and boost your speed a little more.
The item you thought was for helping you in water is a horn. You can use L to blow it and it'll prevent you from getting hit by a blue shell, or blow other opponents from getting ahead of you.

You got the order incorrect. The Egg and Crossing Cups come after the Lightning and Triforce Cups, respectlively.
