Some people can't live with themselves if they didn't do such a thing. What an unbelievable amount of guilt to carry on your shoulders if you feel you can rescue someone from such a fate. You can develop some very severe mental problems from witnessing such a death. It can really screw you up permanently.

I don't have such a wide experience as yours since I've been working as an airport firefighter for only 22 years, the last 10 of which as a crash tender instructor. As far as I can see these fighters are using either PKP or Halotron and you know pretty sure that despite their excellent extingushing power they are not the best solution in open air/windy scenarios. Waterfoam is always the best option for open class B fires both because it can suffocate huge amounts of burning fuel both because it can be used to control the spilling. As you can see the first minutes, the most important when trying to avoid an explosion, are ineffective, a total waste of extinguisher. I personally don't know that kind of equipment, that's for sure not available in Europe, but I reckon it was not the best suited and maybe the staff needed some more trainig.
