6 THINGS YOU DON’T SEE FROM ARCHITECTURE MEDIA (Until you visit them)

  • Hey! It’s been a while! Been busy with work. We have reached 10,000 subscribers, which is A LOT! So thanks a million for the support. :)
    By the way, we, as urban enthusiasts, would like to share with you the feeling of literally visiting the building, not just seeing it from internet. There are some things we have discovered by having contact with these buildings. It is true that internet has given us so much information about architecture by its rendering, photographs, even videos. But by visiting, you get extra subjective meaning and definition about space. Not just an impression, that the designers want to deliver.
    See the video and please let us know if you think there are points we missed.
    Have a great day!

    Acoustics are very important. I heard from the office workers in the Timmerhuis that the floors were very loud, especially when ladies with heels walk over them. Great channel, btw, I just found it!

      glad that you found us! :)
      we visited Timmerhuis ourselves, and agree on that. sounds and noise can only be felt only if you visit the building.

    I loved it, most of your points are the first things i like to think about when i start a new design! :D
    Another point I love to notice is the visual comunication of the building: when i enter it, is it easy for me to find what im looking for? Is it easy to locate the bathrooms? The staircase? Will I instinctively know where I need to go?
    Also if the building from the outside gives me any hints about whats goes on the inside, about its functions: if the façade shows its character.
    For me thats very important in buildings: character.

      Hi Foca! you have the points! as architects/designers, we often forgot how people actually will appreciate the space once it's built.
      The spatial clarity that you are talking about is also true. if you see in the video of Arnhem station, there is only ONE signage (very few compare to normal station in The Netherlands). They were designing a space where users can tell what is where, very brilliant!

    the latter would be the emotion that create the building if people are surprised, excited, scared, happy. For me the most important in the realization of a building that is the emotion, the feeling that we will generate in the viewer. Whether positive or negative, if the viewer has a feeling with regard to the building is great.

      that is so so so deep man! so agree. especially because this is how objectivity of architecture is delivered to the very very personal feel. this brings design to another level

    wow, you visited a lot of cool buildings!! as you might already know from my previous comments, i am jealous that you visited the new delft station and the new buildings in rotterdam :) sooooo cool!
    i had the chance to see the "Pringle" by zaha hadid (swimming pool for the olympics 2012 in London): when you see it from distance looks like the zaha's madness she is famous for, but when you are two steps away from every pillar and every glass wall, what you really see is zaha's style and attention to detail. Like when you read an author and recognize his pace in the storytelling or his style in the verbs and nouns he uses... it's the same! and then, when you recognize the personal touch of the author/architect, then it's when you appreciate it and you start liking it.

      many buildings have this problem too:
      it's good from far, but far from good. :p

    I would include how the space is perceived by human senses: is it noisy or quiet? Is it hot or cold? Does it smell? So on and so forth. But maybe taste it is not a good idea

    • @donotsettle
      @donotsettle  Před 7 lety +2

      +Paolo Furlanis that's a very good suggestion. The noise level can really make or break a space!

      it is! for some reason, i feel that the more public the building, the more appreciation it gets. even though private buildings can be nice too

      ah nice! remember who said that? i also heard once, 'good architecture is easy to sketch'

    • @OneMinuteArchitecture
      @OneMinuteArchitecture Před 7 lety +2

      I believe it was Ando... when I visited his Times building in Kyoyo I understood what he meant.
      I agree with your idea behind the videos: as architects we need to experience the space, not by just seeing it but walking through it, touching it, smelling it,
      " feel the space Luke!"

    you already resume the main things and the comments are completed it but i can add: which structure make it survive ?
    from what people remember the building ? or how did they qualify it ?
    what was here before the building ?
