  • This stunning French château-inspired estate in England’s Buckinghamshire countryside, stands as a symbol of the opulence and cultural refinement of the Rothschild family.
The history of Waddesdon Manor begins in the late 19th century with Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, a member of the prominent Rothschild banking family. Baron Ferdinand, an avid art collector and connoisseur, purchased the land in 1874 from John Spencer-Churchill, the 7th Duke of Marlborough, who was in desperate need of money at the time. When Baron Ferdinand acquired Waddesdon, it was quite simply an agricultural estate that had been partially stripped of its timber by the impoverished Duke.
Inspired by the French Renaissance châteaux of the Loire Valley, he embarked on an ambitious project to build a grand weekend party house that would not only serve to entertain his vast array of influential friends, but also showcase his vast collection of art and decorative objects.
