I hate to say it but at this point the 303 vinyl sim is its selling point.
@@LiamKillen aside from the compressor the vinyl sim was one of the main reasons I wanted a 303. I have a 404sx so for me now it’s no need to get the 303. I’m content knowing that feature amongst many are on the MK2. Thanks for this review.
Thaaank you for showing the bus effects stuff. Every video so far just showed "you can have your drums going to one effect, and samples to another". But no one said if you can send one sample to both haha this thing needs to ship faster 😰

Yeah there's a resource shortage in general for products right now. Everything is being delayed!

I'm wondering if there's a difference between mk ii and 303 vinyl sim- or if it's like the EXACT same thing.
@@LiamKillen According early comparison videos there's a difference, I was hoping there wouldn't be, i suspect the MK2 is off on more then vinyl sim, it sounds very hi-fi in a negative way to me, it's audible. I've noticed you also have to jump through dozens of hoops/options the fake a lo-fi sound oj the MK2, that's a lot of work considering older units just do it, if it sounded accurate it'd be acceptable but from what I'm hearing it does not, it can be have every feature ever, means nothing it it sounds kind of crap, which from what I've heard so far it does, you can probably mix and master the MK2's crappy sound away but that is yet more extra work, I don't think it's worth it.
Great video! Question: how would you go about integrating this with your DAW? Would you just export or record each pad/loop individually? Is that the most efficient way about it? I was thinking maybe the usb c connection would allow more communication from machine to DAW.
I actually haven't looked into DAW integration/exporting yet- it's something that i'll be checking out in the future about the MK ii.
in previous models (all of them), to integrate into my daw, i would do these two things almost every time with great effect-
1. be recording in the daw while i jammed out pads/patterns to capture the “live feel”, with ableton running at my 404 bpm’s, but not sync’d, and not caring if i mess up, just keep recording for 3-6 mins.
2. have strict pattern only recordings with ableton at the same bpm again, but this time no “jamming”, just strictly on time things. no mistakes basically for this recording….because-
then bc ableton is running at the same bpm, trim to the beginning perfectly of each recording and use #2 until i’m ready for fun stuff, then i use ableton’s snapping feature to mix in segments of recording #1 over #2’s track, with only #2 solo’d.
so you have your loose, funner (a word), more “you” recording on #1, but use #2 90% of the time. so you have you flares, and your bread and butter. viola!

Would you recommend this as a playful noodling type of groovebox, or is the primary audience live performers/DJs looking to spice up already made songs?
I'd love to see you explore how the SP-404 workflow might be augmented with a daw for picking up from where the SP-404 reaches its limits. Can you come up with a song sketch and quickly export stems/samples into a DAW, or would you need to basically rearrange it all from scratch again?
I know personally I plan to use the SP404 in conjunction with my DAW. Basically I’m gonna import samples from records into the device, use the chop function to chop the samples up and create a new melody. Then I’m gonna import that melody into my DAW to add guitar, bass, VST instruments etc. I also might use it as an FX unit for certain fx it does really well like vinyl, tape delay etc
I would say it's more of a DAWless tool for fun beat making/conjuring up ideas and then dumping into the DAW OR a live FX tool on master tracks. It can really be both of those things. There's also a DJ mode which I haven't even touched yet!
@@LiamKillen I'm thinking it might be fun to create some cool effects or drone sounds by sampling something and adding lots of effects on it, resampling and throwing it into the MPC One. But it's a hefty price tag for what looks more like a toy.

Really! To me the only thing the 404 actually wins at is multi FX in that regard- the one isn't great for that although you can always DL some software if i'm not mistaken.
Can I use the bus FX 3 and 4 to stack effects on a dry synth maybe? Add a juno chorus and something else, tape to external instruments outside of the pads?
Yeah you can essentialy use it as an FX box if you'd like!

I'm new to producing and have been wanting to upgrade my ableton lite but have now come across this beautiful thing! Now i've got to figure out how to spend my 500 bucks 😅 I'm leaning towards this cause i get so overwhelmed by the ass ton of possibilities on ableton and always end up on the internet
Yeah this has wayyyy more limits than Ableton. If you're looking to go deep a DAW is the way to go. Logic's way cheaper and just as functional BTW!

I haven't tried this i'm not sure if it's possible.
Kinda strange question, BUT can you put distortion on bus 1 and 2, just tweak 1 for light distortion and 2 for heavy?
And if you really really like distortion, could you run four slots of distortion and totally obliterate the samples?
Hey Peter- yeah you can do that! You could even add that onto bus 3-4 and have 2 open busses for even MORE distortion or whatever other effects that you want to add.
Thanks for this! very clear. I´ve got a question may be you figured out. How can I navigate throw multi FX parameters and change them, withot turn the FX on?... While i´m playing. I´m tryng to use the SP as a master FX for my DJ set up. Saludos from Argentina ;)
The way I do it is I have several FX that I navigate through and I make sure that all of them are at 0 . I then made sure that when i'm done using that FX i bring it back to 0

If I were to use this as a guitar fx pedal, arent there limitations on which effects I can apply to the input? Does the effected input still go through this bus fx architecture?
Yes anythign coign in from external is effected and you can add up to 4 FX- 2 of which you can change in real time.

Meaning, in theory I could put this at the end of my synth chain and use it just as an effects processor and stack 4 different effects and have it play live? So like Live Synth > SP Effect (Compressor > Delay > Reverb > Cassette Effect) > Plays out live. Something like that?
You can absolutely do this. It's one of the main ways that I use the SP-404

I think it can also be used as a sketching tool for sure ! It's really just about familiarizing yourself w/ the pattern page.

That seems to be where we're at right now with a lot of companies. So much back ordering going on- shipping is really messed because of COV!D related issues I believe. Or maybe it's something else.
why wont 303 vinyl sym and lofi work? Everything seems to affect the pad when I apply the MFX setting except those?

I haven't tried yet- apparently there are some issues with midi at this point- it needs some debugging.

@@LiamKillen i did download from roland and its on the computer but it can't seem to read the device but the rest of the computer does it. The interface part but when I turn the app on it say please connect you device when it already is connected

[serious question] Can someone explain to me why this sampler is so hyped as it seems a lot of other machines are able to do the same and more for years?
It's really fun and intuitive to resample individual sounds with effects or resample different sounds together in chains. Often end up with sloppiness which humanizes the song.
it's a really good question and you know what? You're absolutely right. To me the thing that makes the 404 unique is the multi FX and being able to seamlessly switch between multi FX within pattrns that you've just created.
IMO using it for Multi FX alone is worth it.
