Technically, Uncle Ray was a plumber but he went on tour with Dewey to repair the water lines from all the sinks that got ripped out. He never forgot those days!

Walk Hard is timeless.
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is a great update to it because it gets most of its humor from taking itself extremely seriously while Walk Hard generally is more winking to the audience.
Both all time great comedy films.
I also love how both movies have the protagonist die basically a few moments after the story concludes.

Walk Hard’s not just a parody. It is a musical of the highest quality with a timeless, expertly crafted soundtrack.
Any musical lives and dies by the songs. This is why Walk Hard is more than just great satire.
That’s the real genius of the movie. The songs ALMOST sound like they could have been actual hits from the time period, and John C. Reilly sings them all with as much conviction as he did “Mister Cellophane” in _Chicago._
@@gelchert Guilty as Charged is a legitimately good not-a-parody song. Reilly's a far better singer than Bob Dylan on Royal Jelly. Heck, Black Sheep was written by Van Dyke Parks who worked with Brian Wilson on SMiLE.
Then there are the songs which mock sensibilities of the time which, as they say, "could never get made in 2024".

But now there’s as many people who say it’s woke because the MC isn’t perfect, and it mentions racism, antisemitism, xenophobia etc. Even when his prejudices get validated in some instances.

@@arthurdent5357 They do keep people in jail for longer than a night. My brother is currently serving 45 day jail sentence. Jail sentences are typically a year or less, prison typically more than a year.
“Ain’t nothin horrible gonna happen today” and “I can’t build you a candy house. It will melt when it rains” are probably my favorite lines. Walk hard is such a good movie.

What they rarely show is how mean spirited the music business can be, as well as the monotony of touring.

@RobGradyVO dude, that whole sequence is platinum comedy. The way Jack black says 'I'm the leader of the beatles', or how schwartzman says he's got a song about an octopus. There's not one line in that scene that isn't quotable.

I can’t watch another biopic without quoting this movie. Latest one was Elvis, the Louisiana Hayride scene made me think of the “Take My Hand” scene from this. It had me convinced Baz Luhrmann watched this movie while writing it. An underrated gem.
The mic feedback was the most blatantly overused device, that made me cringe. But a lot other cliche moment played fresher to me because for one, Elvis was the first and biggest rock star, so those things really happened with him, and for the very first time. I think Baz’s heightened style made these moments fresh again, if you’re willing to surrender to the fact that Elvis was a living legend with details that feel downright mythical to people (dirt poor to first global superstar, started at Sun records, a literal Sun King (metaphorical Sun God) the lost twin at birth, the seismic culture racial shift coming as a matter of course, when he didn’t really set out to be a rebel, only do what he loved, the drastic contradictions in outsized and enigmatic personality, music to film star, fading compared to those he inspired then resurrected into new relevance with music as primal and raw as any he had made; a sleeping giant awakened, and a cult like following secured in his final days…). He created these cliches and Baz worked hard to reinvigorate them as a true metaphor for the cultural evolution and deterioration for America itself and it’s ideals / commercial deconstruction. Imo he succeed and transcended the well worn elements.

@@brianstorm5488 I get frustrated when I see the film called a feature-length Wikipedia entry, since that's a problem a lot of biopics have, and I find that Elvis manages to avoid that problem even though it does go through his whole life. It's a film about how Elvis had to engage with the world around him in order to make vital art, and how the Colonel was ultimately able to trap him because of his own weakness for extravagance and his mistaking it for love. To tell that story, Luhrmann had to go through Elvis's entire life, but there's a narrative throughline (helped by the Colonel's narration); not every music biopic can claim to have that.
Also, if you look at some of Luhrmann's other films, the character of Elvis Presley bears similarities to other characters he's written, most notably Satine in Moulin Rouge. They both want to be great actors, they both talk and sing songs about flying away, and they both ultimately end up as (not my words) "the most famous whore in the world, but a whore nonetheless." Even so, these attributes still feel specific to Elvis, and it never feels like Baz Luhrmann just overlayed a character he had already written onto Elvis Presley. It shows me that Luhrmann had a story to tell that only he could have told, and it just happened to fit the general framework of a biopic.

You hit the nail on the head. The trailer I saw emphasized the stupidest jokes and made the movie look terrible. I went in to a free showing - months after it came out - expecting nothing and was blown away! Went back to see it again the following night, too.

Walk Hard is one of my favorite comedies of all time. It never stops being hilarious while at the same time is such a razor sharp satire of the music bio pic that i literally cant watch them anymore without remembering Walk Hard. Truly an underappreciated gem of a movie.

Can’t believe they tried to copy Dewey Cox story and put it in a Freddie Mercury story.
So, weird piece of information, but a company called Chase Bliss makes a tremolo effect pedal for electric guitar called Gravitas. In the manual that comes with the pedal are suggested settings from the manufacturer, each one named.
"Wrong Kid Died" is one of those settings.
This film is tragically underrated. I watch it almost every year. So many carefully placed yet absolutely stupid jokes. High art!
There's one movie that proves how accurate this parody was. Straight Outta Compton has Walk Hard Moments in it.

Ren I kinda get, but Snoop is weird because The Chronic album is a pretty major plot point in the movie, and it's reduced to Snoop doing a short soundbite from the album.

So many important things left out and so many dumb things kept in so it can wow audiences. Did we really need to see Dre drunk drive in his all white Ferrari in LA? He basically rewrites history and acts like Eazy wasn’t well off without Dre. Let’s not forget how he left out his Dee Barnes incident. I love Dre but he swung his dick the whole movie.

Dude you just made the video I’ve always imagined. Even down to the mention of Love and Mercy. The only thing I’d add is Walk Hard failed largely because of the recession. It’s legendary now and the unrated cut is the version that needed to be seen anyways so it worked out in the end.
Very true, also a contributing factor of the poor box office was WGA writers strike at the time, which meant that late night talk shows weren't making episodes so the actors couldn't make the rounds and promote the movie like they usually do.
John C. Reilly even went on a tour as Dewey Cox. I wish I could’ve seen him live!!

The Buddy Holly Story is a great biopic that bucks the trend and has a fairly limited and authentic chronology _(...and pre-motorcycle accident Gary Busey is AMAZING as Holly)_

Well, for starters he _didn't_ always wear his glasses and in fact only started wearing horn-rims when he was already on tour with the Everly Brothers and he got the chunkier, even more iconic frames when he left The Crickets and moved to New York. _(and even those probably weren't supernatural...)._ Sadly, the "legend" of his glasses is just as mundane as it is heartbreaking... no one made any special effort to retrieve them after the accident site was cleaned up and the frames -- badly scratched, with a broken earpiece and missing lenses -- were only noticed in a Cerro Gordo county evidence locker over twenty years later and finally sent to his widow, María Elena Holly. In 1996 they were donated to the Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock, Texas where they still reside today.

If you're not already a fan of Bob Marley, it won't make you one. It's... OK... but it doesn't feel like it has anything to say that hasn't already been said, something I can say about biopics in general. Despite being one of the better ones of these, it still has that same feeling.
a lot of the songs from walk hard were written by dan bern, a favorite artist of mine. his songs are full of an absurd biting wit and irreverent references to pop culture that never really lets you settle too comfortably into his music and therefore produces some really interesting folk messaging about american popular culture through his songs. he's like a musical kurt vonnegut. bern has also openly talked about being inspired by bob dylan and i think that's one of the reasons walk hard works as well as it does.
Definitely, walk hard wouldn't work if it weren't for the music. They perfectly emulate and parody the artists that's are being poked fun at. Also a lot of the songs are just good songs all their own. "A life without you" is in heavy rotation in my playlists

This is an actual excample of a really underapreciated movie. It's well made, I love the spoof-songs and it has heart and likes the topic that is spoofed, so it does not get mean spirited.
The parody coming from a place of love thing is why i have always held up Black Dynamite as one of the best parody movies ever made. There are so many direct lifts from real blaxploitation movies. One of the characters is just a dead on, perfect impression of Rudy Ray Moore. Better than Eddie Murphy's version by far. Its so packed full of homages, the love and respect they clearly had for the source material comes through on the screen.
Its a parody of blaxploitation that is so accurate I think you could put it up against any original 70s blaxploitation movie. It succeeds as the genre its parodying. I'd argue it elevates it.
Mel Brooks’ earlier spoofs took the same approach. He loves Westerns, old Universal monster movies, and Hitchcock, and that’s what makes _Blazing Saddles,_ _Young Frankenstein,_ and _High Anxiety_ so great.
@@gelchert I've always tried to explain Black Dynamite as being a black Mel Brooks movie. Or at least much closer to Mel Brooks than say, one of the Wayans brothers parody movies. It always felt closer to Young Frankenstein than anything.
Walk Hard is one of the best parodies ever since Spinal Tap. It’s such a funny and quotable movie. I love it!
Walk Hard is my favorite comedy. I had never even seen a music biopic when I first saw it.
The thing that disappoints me about Bohemian Rhapsody is the potential they had to make something unique and original by having the climax be about the Innuendo sessions which Freddie Mercury was having a really hard time with due to his aids getting increasingly worse. It would have been a bit unsettling, but it also would have been very triumphant when you finally see him get through the songs despite his sickness and you see the band supporting eachother , but instead, the major conflict at the end is a band breakup that happened in every other biopic and it didn't even happen with the real Queen.
My main problem with "Bohemian The proxy is that Tami Malak was 6" too short, 20 lbs. too light, and 10 years too young to accurately portray Freddie Mercury...

I have watched this movie so many times, it's amazing! The music is spot on, and the parody is perfect!
This movie is so good I watched it several times, and I have very high standards for watching a movie more than once.
The quotes, the songs, the amazing performances by the actors. You can just tell they all understood exactly how to play their characters straight and get those ridiculous lines out of their faces without collapsing into a laughing puddle on the ground, while also clearly having fun.
And yeah this story did the biopic so good I never want to see another biopic in my life. I dont need to see Oppenheimer because I already saw Walk Hard.

Best biopic ever. I was a kid when i saw the trailers for this in TV, and i rolled my eyes and thought, "This looks like a singer my dad probably listens to."
I grew up on musical biopics, Walk Hard's in my top 3 greatest comedies of all time.

Thank you so much for making this video!! My partner and I are musicians, and Walk Hard is easily one of our all-time favorite movies. They nailed the music biopic- in my eyes, it’s a perfect parody of the genre, and the music! The music is better than it has any right to be. The cast is immaculate. (Tim Meadows steals every scene he’s in.) And John C. Reilly is a fantastic singer!
‘Walk Hard’ has so much going for it, that I think it has to be something of a cult classic for people, even if there isn’t much discourse about it. If it isn’t considered a classic yet, I believe it will be. The cream will rise to the top! 😂
Somehow I’m always taken aback to rediscover its “obscurity” when met by blank stares after bringing it up - in my stubborn unconscious mind it’s this huge film that everyone knows
The reason Dewey Cox worked is because he felt like a real person. You did have an investment in what was going to happen in the movie. My favorite part was when he kept repeating Buddy Holly’s name. I don’t k ow why that was so hilarious. Maybe it was because is most biopics I roll my eyes when they do that, but with that comedic timing it was just a funny joke.
I think the joke is that it was obviously Frankie Muniz in a wig and he kept trying to sell the audience on it.

I'm currently playing in a band joking about getting big and if we do get big enough to get a biopic, I want it to follow the formula and play up/exaggerate/completely fabricate events of the sex, drugs, rock and roll lifestyle, play it totally straight, and just have a flashing icon that reads "THIS DIDN'T HAPPEN" or "THIS HAPPENED, BUT NOT LIKE THIS".
This is one of the reasons I believe Don Cheadle's Miles Ahead is such an excellent movie. It focuses on a single day in the life of Miles Davis, as the audiences conduit is thrown into his life. The film then becomes a mix of 70s-style genre film and the elliptical retelling of the worst moment in his life (as Miles battles crippling drug addiction in the present of the film). I do not mind a biopic, but they must work toward something more than genre conceit. The Brian Wilson and Bob Dylan biopics were slightly more interesting than the formula as well, though they still fall into some of the cliches.
I was watching Weird and 10 mins into it I'm like, oh it's just Walk Hard XD.

I think this is probably the most underrated movie from the "Comedy golden age" of the early-mid 00's. Considering John C Riley is always the side character in nearly all those films, it's good to see him in a leading role. Also, the endless cameos of Muso's and actors playing famous artists always cracks me up.
Being such a huge music fan, I've always loved this movie. I repeat tons of quotes from it near daily.

Most quotable, most rewatchable movie I have ever seen. It gets better every time. With every “what’s the worst thing that could happen” prediction they make, with every drug phase. It’s just the greatest.
This is an excellent essay that makes a lot of strong points. I have two minor quibbles: 1. A LOT of what “Walk Hard” does well is thanks to the influence of the greatest mockumentary of all time - “This Is Spinal Tap.” You ignore this obvious legacy at your peril. And 2. Writing songs is exactly as easy as Dewey makes it look. Just look at my hit single “(You Bring the Ass) We’ll Do the Kicking.” I wrote the hook fumbling around with the guitar on the porch and the lyrics after concepting a poster for my band. It took a total of twelve minutes. It’s all there on my Wikipedia page. Cheers!

I was glad to see a video on one of my favorite movies, but it was great to see a broader take on the music biopic genre as a whole, too.
I swear to god I laughed all through Bohemian Rhapsody because it was like they wrote their scenes to be sincere, hacky versions of the parody scenes in this. That movie is unfathomably awful.

As someone who writes their own songs I honestly think there’s a good reason why they don’t give a more full picture of the creative process, most of the time it’s not that interesting.
Yeah, I've been writing music for over 15 years now, and there's exactly one time I've had one of those movie-like flashes of inspiration: one night I woke up with an acoustic guitar riff in my head, so I got up and recorded a quick demo of it before going back to sleep. It ended up being part of a song I wrote eventually, but honestly I can't even remember what it sounded like anymore.
Most of the time I just sit down with a notation software and guitar and start writing... Or with a DAW and record what I come up with and build up the songs around that. Nothing fancy, nothing even remotely interesting from a spectator's point of view.

I honestly felt that about Walk the Line when i watched it recently. It's seen as the gold standard of biopics, and sure, it's made well, acted well, and all that, but his life honestly wasn't all that interesting (at least not enough for a movie).
And it was very telling how little emphasis it gave to the actual songwriting process. I don't think there was anything to it. He just came out with songs. The music didnn't even matter apparently.

Oddly enough, I think my best stuff was written like that. It seems when I'm not really trying to write is when I'm best at it.
The director's cut, round-about two hours long, is what a fan needs to to see (and have on DVD or Blu-ray or some permanent format).
