I think it mirrors the attitude of politicians of different parties in parliament. The whole childish shebang. That one name Müller-Lüdenscheid is typical for the parliament. With frequent names they add the city they represent to the name.

    • @denniskrenz2080
      @denniskrenz2080 Před 7 měsíci +26

@@mweskampppSimply adding the city to your name would be illegal in Germany estate law. But double names are common, especially among upper class women. Also nobility still exists, which of course is named after regions and cities. Müller-Lüdenscheid is of course meant for comedic effect, but the name encodes a few absurdities which Loriot (who was born in very old noble family, about as old as the idea of a German realm, two ) might have been fully aware of. But thats a lengthy story.

You never followed a conversation of two higher ranking adademics in the German civil service in competition in the 70ties and earlier. That form of conversation is actually only slightly exaggerated. I worked some years later in the civil service and the head of the entity had an own bath tube en suite in his office. We always joked that he and his not very liked deputy sat together in the tube and talked that way - "the duck stays out" was a standard joke.

Loriot (Vicco von Bülow, died in 2011) was a master of observation.
He has observed, dissected and depicted so many everyday situations in an ingeniously subtle way that everyone has to find themselves somewhere.
Many short quotations have become so much used in German that many young people themselves use them without knowing where they come from.
After all, these sketches are almost 50 years old....

The deeper meaning behind this sketch was the political debate culture in the German Bundestag. That some politicians took on issues that weren't actually theirs and then sat rhetorically in the empty bathtub during speeches, i.e. rambling on without any competence.
By the way, there was once a carnival sketch in which this was parodied. There Angela Merkel sat in the bathtub with her husband and had this discussion, only slightly updated. After that, there were many modified copies of it, including one with Merkel and Trump.

I was still a kid when I first saw that sketch on TV - and I am old as the hills now. It is really all about the difference of speech level to content of what they are saying. Plus being naked helps to the absurdity, too.
Two businessmen sitting in one tub and the one to the left - Dr. Kübler - knows early on he is sitting in the wrong tub and still insists on dictating the rules.

Loriots German was always very pointed, very accurate and just like my great grandparents spoke. It sounds like teachers and professors and thick upholstery in carpeted living rooms with oak furniture and massive book cases.
I get really nostalgic listening to him, no one talks like that anymore and it's so calming, precise and at the same time infuriating. So articulate and emotionless. Which makes it hysterical.

Once, around the year 2000, I met him, Vicco von Bülow, the creator, in an antic furniture store in Berlin. Pouring rain outside, he took place on a bench that was for sale in the shop.
As his wife noticed that she was loudly shouting out at him to stand up and not ruining the bench by leaving a stain on it.
It turned out as an embarrassing moment for him. He answered in his very usual, high educated and formal tonality: „But, I am not leaking a single bit.“
I immediately bursted in tears of laughter. His wife waved and capitulated.
This guy was a genius of finest and artful descriptions of observations, subtle pronunciations and psychological schemes.
If you ever asked yourself if Germans have any humor, ad if so what is it like? He is the answer. Mr. Loriot (Vicco von Bülow)

I am impressed, how easy this guys are able to stand uo in a slippery bathtub...
